The questions to be asked are why arent they as fit as the other teams in the comp and who is accountable for this lack of fitness?
For this year, it's due to the lack of pre season.

I think prior to this, it's because the club backed off to try and prevent injury. This failed miserably (less fit players are more likely to get injured).

Probably aren't as fit as other teams because literally everyone on our list has missed time with injury, most with multiple injuries and/or significant injuries, and then having to come back before they're ready because someone else has gone down. This is what has been setting us back significantly in the fitness stakes.

Question should be, why do we keep getting injured?

This thread moves so fast that if you stop reading it for half a day you miss 5 pages... of majority crap. I wish I could complain with more conviction about it but being a mostly crap contributing poster that'd be a bit hypocritical.

Are we still on Devon Rodman and Wardlaw?

Answered your own question.

Nah we're at the "list is full of old, injured fatties" stage of the cycle.

Got a bad feeling Winder will go,not happy about that.

West will stay. He should go instead of Winder. Big heart, hard and a team player but will struggle when others are fit to play and the new draftees need games.
West is a heart and soul player that brings effort each week but has very little upside

Winder has struggled with injury and is starting to show glimpses. I sense a much higher upside

Since we have Clark as a very similar player to West, plus the trio of Chesser Hough and Culley plus the midfield picks in this draft coming, I would lean to Winder staying. But there again, Winder is not getting much game time do I sense he is more vulnerable

Why are we not fit enough? There is no accountability

At the end of the year, our fitness staff will almost all be retained
Our medical staff will all be retained
Team standards, ie skinfolds, have clearly dropped and the players know full well that despite that, they will be selected
The club has consistently be in denial, from the board down, about the "fitness" of this team and have made excuses
Our favorite sons (ie Nic Nat) are constantly excused about their conditioning when its painfully obvious they are nowhere near fit enough

And you know what will change at the end of this year? Almost nothing

Strength conditioning and medical teams will be retained, our fitness boss will be retained, all our senior players will be retained, and the same excuses for the same serial offenders will be trotted out

This can only change with a dramatic overhaul to our staff and standards, which wont happen because we value stability and tenure over all things

Look for more of the same in 2023

Completely disagree, realistically West is a hack and will never ever ever be a best 22 player in a top 8 team, anyone that disagrees doesn’t understand football.

Trew is a bit tougher as he does have slight potential of making the grade, don’t see why we couldn’t re rookie him. In terms of inside mids next year our only potential players are Culley, O’Neil, Kelly, Pick 2 (hopefully). Shuey can definitely play off a half forward flank and have short bursts without holding anyones development back.

The best 18 I listed earlier is perfect, if anything Hurn is far more expendable as we have literally 20 hbf’s.

That is possibly the worst take I have ever heard. (not even the part about your best 18 being perfect).

Trew, who has shown very little, but has a certain birthdate - is more chance of making it than West who has shown quite a lot (and significant improvement, despite some ongoing deficiencies)?

West has shown a lot of improvement, including in his biggest area of concern which is his disposal. Not sure he will end up a B22 player, but if the choice for the last place on the list (rookie list) was/is between him and Trew then it's West every time.

Meh, i've said enough on Shuey's captaincy and his role in this side going forward.

If Hurn expectedly stays as well, we're going to have a 36 and a 33yr old running around in a rebuilding side next year.

Thinking it's going to be more of the same in 2023. I wouldnt' be using any future draft picks in trades this year.

I always enjoy a pre-emptive melt.

Seriously though, our fitness levels can clearly be traced to the worst injury list this club has ever seen + COVID.

No excuses for next year but I thought it was pretty obvious that having to play underdone players each week is why we are so unfit.

If you take a look at the other rebuilding teams, you'll notice that all of them have a number of 30+yo's playing.

I'm wondering if our poor fitness towards the end of games is because we are being beaten. Takes a lot of effort to keep tackling and chasing. The derby was a high intensity game where we were getting physical the dockers. Hard to keep that going 4 quarters.

You don’t understand footy if you think West could ever be best 22 in a contending team.

I love his effort but he just isn’t and never will be clean enough by hand and foot to fill a role.

Trew has a slight chance being 2.5 years younger and at least showing a bit of class.

This isn't just this year

From memory, we were the worst performed last quarter team in the league last year
And either last or second last the year before that

That's poor fitness for the past couple of years. Which, as the club does, is overlooked, ignored or excused

2020: The excuse was that we didn't handle hubs well
2021: it was lack of continuity due to COVID
2022: it was lack of players available due to COVID (which was true early on), whilst ignoring that we had much greater player availability later in the year for no additional success

Our fitness and standards have been on the wane since 2018

Too many guys with interrupted preseasons.

Then getting covid in season.

Then add more injuries and rehab. The in-season injuries came as a result from the first two setbacks.

Senior guys out meaning we had to play kids who weren't ready or players who weren't match fit.

All that snowballed into what we have seen this year. Chasing tail and gasping for breath. We have made some improvement post the bye because players were only just getting match fitness.

It’s the injuries. Other teams are training with high intensity and ramping when they plan to, while we’ve spent all year nursing blokes through the week and going softly. We’ve also been picking guys who aren’t quite right on game day it’s no wonder it’s all caught up with us.

Hurn doesn’t turn 36 until next September. Brave to assume we’ll be playing then.

So what's the excuse for the 2nd half of last year

Demons were one club that got rid of their 30 year olds during the rebuild phase. Turned the club into a basket case that took them several phases of rebuild to climb out of.

Unless I have been asleep COVID is Austraila wide (or was it globally?). The key question is - why so many injuries? There is a science to this - we need better advice/programming.
