For the next few years we are fine but when 2025 rolls around we have Barrass at age 30 and Edwards as our only key defenders with any experience. Hoping a 19yr old Bazzo comes good isn't a great strategy and if he does we are still in the market for another at some stage in the next couple of years.
You're chicken counting. I've never seen chicken counting pan out. We have a blank canvas with only AA and Chesser on it. We don't even know if Chesser can play. Over time, those key defenders will show themselves. Could be Bazzo. Could some guy in this draft or next draft. We just need to focus on finding those A graders. Most of the rest will fall into place. Then once we're in the flag window we draft in experienced players specifically to fill our gaps (Stenglein etc).

In a vacuum i'd say McGovern easily, a tier up in my eyes.

Keeping him allows us to sell off Gaff, Duggan etc and still keep a competitive squad together. Carlton 2006 era and Melbourne 2010era are examples of why you don't gut the list too heavily.
2025 rolls around and we've probably got any number of young talls from later in the draft developing, the way we've developed plenty of decent tall options in the past. Under your strategy we've still got **** all mids winning the ball in the middle anyway so we might need 6 tall defenders to stop the ball coming in, build a wall of defenders.
I'm not saying don't take Florenca, I'm saying if Culley, or someone else is young and has the potential to be very good then you take them first.
As good as Florenca was in that game he played for us it's not like he was Chris Judd out there. He was solid sure but people are only frothing over him in comparision to the dross the rest of our midfielders have served up this season.

Yes we like them...with Jamieson and Bailey Williams showing they have a future Eagles will be looking at midfielders at MSD pick 1 ....I'm certain .
Williams isnt a good footballer and may be ok in the future, Jammo is developing very well. On the other hand, Gov and Barrass are proving short agains the new bread of tall. Harry isnt there (yet) and may never. Our forward line doesnt have a tall marking target. When Dixon is your best you need depth.

But we lack class in the midfield for sure. Balance is demanded. Tall doesnt mean slow and unskillful. We need pace and skill in talls which is the gift early picks brings.

What does it matter what his stats were as a 19yo, he’s playing good footy now.
If you’re going to go back and see what his form was 5 years ago, I wonder what Culley’s form was as a 14yo.
We need to draft for the future as well as the now. Weve got some mature age mids recently to get us through.
If florenca is there at our second sure but we need to get some young talent in so we dont bottom out every 5 years when our mature ages retire

I’ve got no problem going for a young guy with potential and showing some form at the moment first.
What I was questioning was what’s the point of wondering what Florenca’ form was as a 19yo, 5 years ago.
Form from that long ago is irrelevant.
Well it's a comparison isn't it? You're not drafting these young blokes based on what they put out in their first season, it's what they might put out down the track. We're obviously not potentially bringing Culley in based on what he's going to give us this year, but what he's going to give us for the next 10-12. You're weighing up bringing in Florenca now who won't be around for our next flag tilt or someone like Culley who could end up being better than Florenca and will likely be around for our next premiership run.

That's a very good point . If you can draft a 19 yo who is a bit below the level of a 25 yo its probably a better option.
I do worry about the flight risk to a degree, you'd want to check if its somebody thats happy to come to WA

I think if he's willing to sign on for 18 months (think MS draftees can sign on for 6 or 18 months) that's a pretty good sign he'd be happy to stick around.
And if he's not and he's any good you get something back in trade for him anyway.

If Florenca is the next TKelly quality mature age recruit, we'll be kicking ourselves if we gamble on him being there for our 2nd pick.

That said, if Culley is genuinely tracking as a top 20 pick in the ND, taking him in the MSD is like splitting our #1 pick for another 1st rounder without having to split it. At 19yrs of age he probably has a lot more upside once he gets into an AFL environment than Florenca.

Firmly on the fence on this one. All I know is whatever happens, we reserve the right to rage at ROB regardless.

Kelly was 23 when he was drafted, Florenca is already 25. We also have Clark and West already in the side, how many mature age WAFL mids do we really want to fill our team up with? Sure take him, but not at the expense of a younger guy with more potential. It's not like we're winning much for the next few years anyway.

So if Florenca is a TK level quality, i.e. an AFLPA best rookie and Brownlow top 5 finish in his first 2 seasons, you're still against taking him? Just because of age?

Most can see the logic in that but Rohan & co probably won't.
Filling the team with mature agers make more sense if we're contending, not rebuilding.

Had a look at Tsatas.....huge red flags. Doesn't win his own ball and shirked a few contests.

Saying that, he would be a quintessential West Coast pick. Which worries me. Greatly.
I was surprised when I saw he had 15 or so possessions. I missed the early goal, saw him shirk a few contests, and got one inside ball and got the handball out to advantage. The rest of the time, he just didn't look dangerous or damaging at all. I'd have to see some serious ball winning (inside and out) in the champs to have him in the top 10.

I mean I've said about 15 times I'm not against taking him, I just wouldn't take him with our first if there is a good young talented option available at that pick.
Also Florenca won't be either of those things, he's probably not even as good as Clark

It's an issue for me. Happy to spend a second PSD pick, not first.

We are essentially building a whole new team from scratch. The more tickets in the lottery we have, the better chance we have of finding the required players. A 25 year old will most likely be finished up before our next flag.

Are we trying to field a wafl side or rebuild? West Clarke naish and now florenca ? We seem too be going to far the other way .

Culley first pick no brainer . Free hit to start our rebuild. We have very little young midfield talent .

Injured chesser , skinny hough both haven't actually showed they can play midfield.

Injured Edwards , O'Neill and turnover merchant naish .

West and Clark are not the talent you win a flag with .

We need to spend time at the bottom of the ladder . Load up with top end talent , get them to play 50+ games together minimum.

Then maybe look at role players and free agents .

Fair nuff.
I don't watch WAFL so don't have an opinion on him. Just questioning whether age is really that big an issue.

If we were still competing for a flag then sure Florenca is a great pick, even just to flesh out our midfield depth.
But we're not, so whatever picks we make have to be made with building towards our next premiership team front of mind

Still need to be competitive though in the next few seasons to help the young draftees coming into the club .

My theory to make top 2 and win finals is you need 5 truly elite players (Judd, Cousins, Kerr, Cox, Glass) or (Kennedy, Naitanui, McGovern, Gaff, Hurn) another roughly 8 to be high quality above average types.
So around 13-14 core players who would be 1st choice in any AFL team.

If we are trading in going to be an above average bracket of player and more than likely a midfielder as there's spots you can fill 2x wing & 4x onball positions compared with 4 key posts which are a lot more specific in their roles. Plus failed mids can be moved to flanks (Wellingham :anguished: ) where as failed talls are genuinely useless.

Our true A graders have all come from the draft so that's a no brainer, we don't get that kind of go home factor like Melbourne teams do. And it's quite rare when you're playing good footy to want to move clubs. So if we can draft one at any position we take em. And if you had a blank canvas and a choice between absolute guns in different spots i'd lean towards grabbing a Key Fwd, Balanced Mid, Outside Mid, Fwd, Pure Inside Mid, Key Def, Gen def

2018 top end: for example (putting injuries aside & not represented are: pure inside mid, key def or gen def)
Elite tier
Key Fwd: Max King
Balanced Mid: Bailey Smith
Balanced Mid: Sam Walsh
---------
Slightly a tier down
Key Fwd: Ben King
Fwd: Izak Rankine
Fwd: Jack Lukosious
Fwd: Connor Rozee

After you get past the good talls I don't see a point in prioritising the position as you can't utilise an extra tall (Mitch Brown) in any other spots and playing smaller if injury strikes isn't the worst thing to happen.
