Still need to be competitive though in the next few seasons to help the young draftees coming into the club .
You also need midfield time for them to develop. Yeo, Kelly, Gaff, Clark & West is a fairly experienced, mature bodied nucleus to help bring on the next young batch.

My theory to make top 2 and win finals is you need 5 truly elite players (Judd, Cousins, Kerr, Cox, Glass) or (Kennedy, Naitanui, McGovern, Gaff, Hurn) another roughly 8 to be high quality above average types.
So around 13-14 core players who would be 1st choice in any AFL team.

If we are trading in going to be an above average bracket of player and more than likely a midfielder as there's spots you can fill 2x wing & 4x onball positions compared with 4 key posts which are a lot more specific in their roles. Plus failed mids can be moved to flanks (Wellingham :anguished: ) where as failed talls are genuinely useless.

Our true A graders have all come from the draft so that's a no brainer, we don't get that kind of go home factor like Melbourne teams do. And it's quite rare when you're playing good footy to want to move clubs. So if we can draft one at any position we take em. And if you had a blank canvas and a choice between absolute guns in different spots i'd lean towards grabbing a Key Fwd, Balanced Mid, Outside Mid, Fwd, Pure Inside Mid, Key Def, Gen def

2018 top end: for example (putting injuries aside & not represented are: pure inside mid, key def or gen def)
Elite tier
Key Fwd: Max King
Balanced Mid: Bailey Smith
Balanced Mid: Sam Walsh
---------
Slightly a tier down
Key Fwd: Ben King
Fwd: Izak Rankine
Fwd: Jack Lukosious
Fwd: Connor Rozee

After you get past the good talls I don't see a point in prioritising the position as you can't utilise an extra tall (Mitch Brown) in any other spots and playing smaller if injury strikes isn't the worst thing to happen.
Who were your 5 in the 2018 finals?

An ideal spine setup is
3 Key def, 1 Lockdown, 2 intercept
2 Key Fwd, 1 stay at home FF, 1 leadup CHF
1 Full game ruck (with someone who can pinch hit which will be diffeent for al teams)

Melbourne have stolen our def setup and really turned them from a good team to the dominant one we see.
Lockdown -Petty (Schofield)
Intercept - May (McGovern)
Intercept - Lever (Barrass)

FF - Tom McDonald
CHF - Ben Brown

Ruck full game - Gawn
Pinch hit - Jackson, which allows Gawn to be a 3rd free intercepting defender or to go fwd without losing any leg speed or structure.

:blueheart::yellowheart:WCE -2026 Flag team:blueheart::yellowheart:
Lockdown - Edwards
Intercept - Barrass
Intercept - ??? (Bazzo)

FF - ??? (Dixon, J. Williams)
CHF - Allen

Ruck full game - ??? (Jamieson)
Pinch hit - ??? (B. Williams)

Just one more week and we'll find out where Simpson and Co are really at.

Flamenco - even though no slouch - is the kind of pick you get when you're in a window, not when your team is crying out for young talent.

Unfortunately I've been watching this same movie for a while now; I'm expecting us to go Flamenco with our first, then an obscure tall with our second. If so, we will know that Simmo is just playing for his career. If he goes hard for young talent then I'll be one of the reformed that believes he's looking at our next tilt.

I truly hope it's the latter.

Spot on, it will tell us whether Simpson is the coach to lead us for the next couple of years and see where we're at or if we should try and push him out the door asap

I see no reason why we aren't taking 2 x MSD picks now we have freed up 2 spots. If we just wanted to take 1 then we could always have moved another player to inactive later on.

With that in mind, I also see no reason Florenca won't last until our 2nd pick. There will be around 12 teams with picks, so he'll only need to get to the early teens to be available at our 2nd.

It makes sense to take him at our 2nd, we have 2 mids who are likely to retire this year (Shuey and Redden) plus the young talent on our list is all tall. Florenca won't be stealing games from the youth, he would be helping them develop (and hopefully improving himself).

But we have the opportunity at (almost certainly) pick 1 to get a free hit at a young mid, the 'best of the rest' from a compromised draft last year. Would/should surely be a career killer for at least some in our list team if we overlook that.

Apologies - I didn't really make it clear, I'd be very happy with Flamenco as our second pick, just not our first, especially if we have #1. It's basically a free swing at a young player which we should take.

I agree we need to use the #1 MSD pick and treat it like an extra ND pick
So take a punt on the best young midfield talent that you get an extra 6 months of development in
I think after the first 3-4 picks in the MSD the talent will drop off i suspect
Florenca will probably not be taken by another team unless they're in contention and they need a mid - would Freo take a punt?
I suspect teams in the window will draft based on needs.

Long rant but I think a few fans need to be reminded (especially of the Facebook pages)

Doesn’t matter who we pick if we can’t develop them (Melbourne, Carlton in the mid-late 2000’s, north right now). People saying gutting the list please give me an example of how that has worked?

Especially with the soft cap on footy department experienced players help teach young guys as much as the line coaches do. (If you listen to past players from strong clubs speak on all these podcasts you would here examples of that quite often).

We have to fix the WAFL eagles for that point. I know we lost a few players due to the back flip of weather we will have a side or not and the wafl puts strong limits on us but we need get some experience (ex AFL or actual wafl experienced players) in their to go along with our AFL contracted players to help build standards and teach the young 18-20 year olds during game day, I can’t imagine bazzo or Williams are learning much each week when they are the number 1 key forward or defender.

Hence why don’t be shocked if we take a mature player on the mid season draft to help with that to make sure standards don’t slip this year.

There is always a bigger picture that can only really be seen within the club, we as a club have typically been great at keeping things in house and not letting it spill out into the media for your Kane Cornes type to twist and prod. Oscar Allen’s foot was always worse then first mentioned, Yeo 2 years ago with his OP was always worse then said. These are just examples of this. I know it’s frustrating for us as fans but weather the club does it for player/ fan morale or to not give certain types of the media a free shot of making something out of nothing, clearly it’s worked for us compared to other clubs who let things leak very easily

Our list is in a really tricky place when you look at age profile/talent depth and some tough decisions/ conversations are going to be had. I would rather that happen with a stable footy department then with a new coach/CEO as we may need to press refresh in a year or 2 if it doesn’t work and the culture becomes toxic as players get upset that they have either been put up for trade or close mates have been traded as it has at other clubs (Thats the time to look at a new department). If we do it now and things go sour with the new leadership (who won’t have the positive relationships built with players and agents) and we have to refresh again that when we end up like your norths and Melbourne’s mid 2000’s bombers post dipping saga and freo pre Peter Bell.

Don’t get me wrong I think we will need to make changes off field at the end of the year I just think the CEO and Coach are well down the priority list. Nothing is certain in a rebuild otherwise their would be a playbook on it, history has shown stability and experience off field are key pillars of this.

Which have been a very common theme of our club and why we have been so successful and we have had more players want to come to the club then want to leave.

This year has been ****ed No and I me No coach or CEO could do drastically better with the cards we have been dealt with covid and freak injuries (the ankle injuries we have experience are freak, unless we have changed our strapping tape to a Cole’s brand, I don’t think there is anything we could have done). We have had to play guys out of form, under done because of having no one else to pick, one of the best driver for a coach to use is pressure for spots due to guys banging the door down in the WAFL we haven’t been able to do that and probably won’t be able to this year.

When it comes to recruit we don’t see what those within the club do, if we don’t pick Culley it could be for so many reasons which ya Cal twomeys of the world are privy to or don’t report on. Not saying I know anything about culley just saying there is always a bigger picture.

My main point is as fans we can’t really do much to make an impact but us remaining calm (we can be frustrating but calm) for atleast this year and save the pitch forks till next year will help.

Kelly was 23 when he was drafted, Florenca is already 25. We also have Clark and West already in the side, how many mature age WAFL mids do we really want to fill our team up with? Sure take him, but not at the expense of a younger guy with more potential. It's not like we're winning much for the next few years anyway.

Most our team are WAFL level players and most couldn’t get a kick there either. Florenca deserves ago ahead of 80% of our list

Would love to know the bigger picture behind picking Collins last year

How do we pay all these SSPs and MSDs?

Yeah that looks a rough one but maybe another club after our pick was keen on him and we FOMO’d. No other excuse for that one no sure if we have missed out on any superstars with that one though.

Maybe Greg Clark gave O’Brien a call draft day and said give me 6 more months at subi please! So we picked someone up who we knew wasn’t gonna be their in 6 months so no awkward conversations haha

Who knows, it was a very weird pick, especially considering he trained with us in the pre-season so we knew what we was capable of

Bet you my membership we dont take Culley with our first
Of course they won't take culley. The club will be more interested in winning a couple of games to take the heat off them rather than look to the future.

If we are serious about rebuilding we need to offload Simpson.

Having one of the highest paid coaches in a bottom team that is rebuilding is stupid .

You could get a new coach and 3-4 development coaches for the cost of Simpson

Some praise for my boy Wardlaw after todays AFL Academy match against Collingwood:

George Wardlaw - firmed as the number one player in this years draft for me. Contested work was fantastic, but it was his explosiveness that impressed me most. On a number
Of occasions he burst from the stoppage and linked up with team mates. Got pinned for HTB trying to break through tackles in the first half but adjusted well in the 2nd half. His kicking is fantastic and he has quick fire hands in close.

Smythe said:
George Wardlaw - just sublime, creative, effective disposals, efficient user hitting the right targets, aware of surroundings and clearly best on. At one point a pack was gathering to fight for the ball, he got to it first, saw a tackle about to be applied on him from the left and calmly dropped to one knee and spun under and out of the tackle, stepped back away from another tackle coming from his right and fired off the ball releasing a team mate to deliver the ball forward. So calm and clean all day.

Feel like this is the wrong year for us to have a #1 pick.

Not because we don’t need it- clearly we do. But because of the run of luck we have had in the last 24 months.

I feel like we could choose the next Luke Ball at 1 but then subsequently realise as the years roll on we let the next Judd & Hodge slip through to #2 & #3 all because we fell in love with how nice a young fella he is.

Having said that, it does seem like we will have a good problem at the draft this year, over our usual haul of “3 top 50” selections, all of which our main targets are well long gone.

I would be inclined to keep our first 2 picks, and then try to use ports second rounder to trade for some additional known quantity or a young midfielder out of favour like Dev Robertson.
