Our recruiting team has just as much to answer for as the SC team. Our continued inability to identify and draft half decent mids has just killed us.
Yep the biggest priorities for mine are

1 S&C (and agree about the point a few posts back of personal player responsibility coming into this as well)
2 Draft high quality midfields
3a New game plan (been some modifications this year but needs to swing even further to contested football)
3b New coach if a complete new game plan isn't coming to fruition or is ineffective
4 Dropping underperforming senior players (i.e. the credit bank has to be empty now)
5 Moving 6-8 senior (28yo and above) players off the list by 2024 (we would still have about 6 28yo+ on the list which I think is about the right balance for guiding a rebuild)

I've put them in order of importance but in reality all five need to happen over the next couple of years.

I wouldn’t underestimate the impact continuity will have on our list next year. We haven’t had the chance to get the same group training together for any length of time. And you just can’t drive standards the same way when you’ve only got 23 to choose from each week.

This season sucks, but I’m actually thinking this year will inevitably save a year or two of extra pain. We went all in to double up- no issue there, but now we have to reset.

#1-3 this year, add a fit Chesser, Allen, a full preseason for Rioli, Ryan, Yeo and another preseason into guys like Hough, Edwards, Winder and the results can turn quicker than what you think.

Unfortunately, we never did get to see the best of the Shuey, Kelly, Yeo trifecta.

They other issue is all the top teams are moving the ball fast. I'm sure in a different set up he can get the ball and move it on quicker but he hasn't got an overly accurate nor penetrating kick.
You obviously haven’t watched us much then.

Most of the time we’re trying to slow the game down and get the opposition to play at our speed.

We’ve only played 2 “fast” games. Against North and GC, where once we crushed their spirit, it turned in to a training run.

We don’t have the leg sped or kicking skills from the back half or midfield to play fast.

The players that will never be part of a strong team (lest say top 4 with a GF prospect) on exposed ability
Waterman
Dixon
Williams most likely
Gaff - age
Kenedy - age
Nic- age
Xon
Naish
Rotham
Nelson
Hurn -age
Harry E
Witherdon
Shuey - pure class but body is done

Probably not quite there yet but there is hope
Clark - hope he developed
West - looks agressive
Sheed - is he alive

Need a change of mind set in a hurry - if not get them out:
Darling
Ryan
Rioli
Gov
Cripps
Kelly

We haven't had the picks though.

In 2013 we took Sheed at 11. He was the highest rated WA player at the time. Cripps went at 13. Zach Merret at 26.
In 2014 we took Duggan. Eyebrows were raised as to why we took a half back flanker but the next midfielder better than him is Touk Miller at 29.
In 2015 our first pick was at 28. We took Partington. He was an u18 AA midfielder. Not sure what we did with our first pick.
In 2016 we took Veneables at 13.
In 2017 we took Brander at 13
In 2018 our first pick was at 28. We took Xon.
In 2018 we sold our first station and didn't have a pick until 49. Jamieson.
In 2020 we sold our second station and our first pick was at 52. Edwards.
in 2021 we took Chesser at 14.

When you go and have a look at those drafts, the top 10-13 have a lot of talent or decent players still playing. After that it's few and far between. It's an absolute lottery. I think someone on here said "every pick after 18 is like having pick 18".

Not sure why our first picks in 2015 and 2018 were at 28, but I assume we were in flag mode and recruiting in jigsaw pieces.

We sold the farms for Kelly, but we were chasing a flag. A change up of gameplan and we may have won another one.

The true issue is this: We just didn't have the picks. When you look at our picks at 13 and the players that came after - it's a lottery. There's players all the other clubs missed too.

Have a look at the 2018 draft. First 13 picks are strong. After that, hardly anyone is playing anymore.

This is why who we draft in the next 3 years is critical.

Great, we'll give you Gaff for a pack of Timmies.

Any interest in Zurhaar? Not sure we need another mid sized forward.

He does at least have some mongrel in him. Something our team of prima donnas genuinely lack.

Nope. I like him. I like his dirty moustache. But we need to go to the draft.

Seems to be abit of chat that we will take Brynn Teakle in the MSD - that would make sense given Bell's comment we will go tall. Bet we Florenca and Teakle sigh.
Oh good, another mediocre ruck/forward to add to our multitude of mediocre ruck/forwards.

Oh but there is relevance. The results of every draft and every draft pick are independant to every draft and draft pick that preceded or will follow it.

This, along with the fact you need to judge talent on its merits when deciding who to take at #1, is the reason why you can't use statistics to guide your drafting strategy.

And don't worry about offending me, this is the internet, nothing on here means a damn thing.

Nah the pick that precedes a pick is pretty important. If Naitanui goes pick 1… we would of been more likely to end up with say a jack watts.
