I like Derksen. If we picked him up along with Florenca I wouldn’t be disappointed at all.

If we did get Derksen though we’d need to move on Bailey Williams and/or Jake Waterman in a trade if we can, otherwise we’re overstocked and I really don’t want to cut Dixon because he’s got tons of potential.

If people are wetting their panties over Culleys small sample size I hope they're also doing the same over Derksen.

Bloke has played 1 good WAFL game where he beat up on a pathetic Beagles side. McKinley could kick 10 against West Coast Beagles team right now.

Other than that, between his other 2 games he's averaged 12.5 disposals, 3.5 marks, 4.5 tackles, and 1.5 goals.

3 league games. Hardly world beating.

Seems an archaic perspective but I wonder what Simmo would make of Culley’s dreadlocks?

Particularly on the back of what JK was talking about on Schoey’s Backchat pod about Simmo wanting “clean cut” players when he came to the club so Masten and Schofield both got rid of the hipster beards but JK went “fcuk that” and kept his.

So you're saying that Simpson basically told players to shave their sideburns?

Unsurprisingly we likely will treat the MSD this season as a chance to draft top ups and have them officially on our team. Disappointing that we do not give the MSD the respect it deserves.
Yes. In a cut throat competition you have to take maximum advantage of every opportunity you get. The MSD and RD are two examples of this. The team is going nowhere this year, it would in fact be best now to finish last. ( They are doing a very good job of this ATM 😆). But this is a chance to get something others haven’t. They do seem to have realized this partly by making space for two players. Nailing the best possible choices is the next and most important part.

Next minute Culley says he doesnt want to relocate....
Too bad, relocate him anyway. If he wants to go back after 18 months then there will be Vic clubs lining up to trade for him. If he doesn’t give it his best shot he risks losing his career. Win for us either way if he is a good player.

Tom Cole has signed a three year deal to the end of 2025.

Those stats minus the WC game are still very good for a fwd/ruck.

Derksen’s shown in his small sample size

  • an ability to take pack marks
  • leads well
  • accurate set shot
  • kicks well off both feet
  • speed and agility
  • stays involved in contests when the ball is in dispute

Even in his 1 quieter game against Perth most recently he still laid 8 tackles - twice the number of any of his teammates.

From watching him the best comparison I can come up with is a State league version of Luke Jackson.

Bombers trying to sneak in there, he's going super early.
18 month contract could be bombers trying to scare us and norf off, telling him to do it and they'll sign him on that.

Tells you everything you need to know, loads of clubs interested, so safe to go 18 month contract.

We could get Culley as collateral and trade him to a team in the next draft even if we didn’t want him ..

It is the concern, and it is a good point. But he did have an ok season last year, I remember seeing one of his games last year and I thought he did a few really nice things.
Watching him this season, it's not just his dominance in those games that has caught the eye it's his AFL quality traits that I'm willing to have a crack in the MSD on.

He has got a lot of traits;
  • agility in the contest
  • good hands in tight
  • contested marking
  • Long kicking (elite)
  • tackling and pressure in the contest
  • ability to break tackles
  • moves really well and has increased his pace

For a team that is screaming out for young midfielders, he ticks all the boxes and could be something special at AFL level. It's the mid season draft, I'm more than happy to take the risk...
If it were the national draft I'd play it safer with an early pick.

I haven't seen Derksen play, so I hate to comment. From a small amount of footage, he does move bloody well for a big man. But statistically he hasn't been that good either, remove his Beagles game (as someone already mentioned) which inflates his numbers big time, but then it does for everyone.

I'm happy with the risk as well. I only saw one of his games last year playing as a mid sized forward and he showed some AFL attributes and I agree with all of your above points. I agree with all your points above and have seen him twice this year. The only thing being is with his size and weight he seems a lot more physically advanced than those he's playing against. His key features for me are his booming long kick, agility and marking. His on ball game is good but not amazing (it's a 50/50 for me as is it due to his relative lack of experience in there or is he more dominant due to size and weight) and he is also coming from a little further back than some of the guys in last years draft.

Statistically I'd also be inclined to remove Derksen's game but just call it a hunch from the last few years, the players we've trialled and overagers we've looked into and picked have had good games against our reserves in more than 1 case. The other thing being if we are going to discount Derksen's game against the Beagles I'd really have to discount his game against Vic Metro. That was one of his two games i've seen this year and it was missing it's 3 best mids as well as a few other APS boys.

I've seen derksen play twice this year. He has good hands, is a good height and a very good athletic profile. His kicking is good without being great. I also feel his marking and goal numbers would be better if he wasn't chopping out in the ruck at times. He does turn 21 in June. I missed his game on the weekend as I was over watching the Academy side Vs Collingwood VFL in Frankston (**** i hate Frankston)

The only other thing with Culley is nominating an 18 month contract may put west coast off. I'd suggest any other midfield names outside of Florenca are back ups in case he is taken before our second.

So you know as a prospect I do rate Culley ahead of Derksen. I just get the feeling west coast are going to go one of two ways about this. We are either going to pick up Derksen (there are a couple of other talls but he's the one most likely to fit the bill) with our first and then Florenca with our second / Whomever we rate as the best senior mid going around if Florenca is taken.

Or in typical West Coast style we take Florenca with our first and then it's more of a project tall with our second. It's not that I don't want Culley, it's just I would be shocked for West Coast to make that decision.

Tom Cole has signed a three year deal to the end of 2025.

ROB has liked his more long-kicking and attacking mindset when playing off the wing this season and decided to reward him.

By the way, What is the NAB League? Is it the equivalent of the WAFL Colts? How is it compared to the WAFL League?
Why Culley is not playing in the VFL?

NAB League is the old TAC Cup. Culley is playing in it as an overage player after he didn’t get drafted last year. It’s a pretty common thing to do over there

Culley's probably nominated 18 months due to the amount of interest in him, which means he's guaranteed a decent first contract.

You'd be an idiot to only go for 6. In fact, surely if he had the old 'go home' factor, then the first thing he'd do is go for the shortest contract?

Still not convinced we'll take him though.

Should bump Tsatas up our draft board

The foot fracture would explain his poor kicking which is normally good and also his lack of impact at the contest and even the few times he half shirked the contest / half stepped because of footsteps. 6 weeks with a foot stress fracture is like asking for it to be recurring. I'm not sure he's back that quickly. Will very likely go 10-20 now which surely means I don't have to worry about us drafting him.
