Don’t know him from a bar of soap but Culley surely suits our required age profile (18 to 22yo) better than Florenca.

Take Florenca with our second pick by all means. But an overlooked 19 year old Vic kid who missed exposure to recruiters due to Covid seems the far more preferable option as several posters have noted.

Read elsewhere that Culley would go 1st round in this years draft.

His size and playing style sounds very Bontempelli like.

Are our recruiters prepared to ignore this opportunity and watch a Bontempelli clone slip through our fingers?

Sad thing is we all know that is what will likely happen, that's how much confidence we have in therecruiting team atm.

No doubt that the club don't view the MSD the same was the ND, they probably compare it more to the rookie draft, esp since the players taken end up on the rookie list. So it's more of a free hit on what they view as speculative prospects or mature age top ups, rather than obtaining long term players they can take time to develop.
In the ND, they are a little more likely to take best available depending on if there are players they are already locked in on.

Paddy Sweeney on 6pr sports report saying all the talk is we're looking to take a tall in the MSD

No idea how accurate he normally is on draft related issues though
How many talls do we need ?

Maybe Allen's foot has been amputated in a bid the get him ready for preseason

Also on Derksen if you take out his wafl game vs the Beagles his form is nothing special

Whenever a player has a breakout game vs the Beagles, they'll be in consideration to get onto the Eagles list lol.

Seems an archaic perspective but I wonder what Simmo would make of Culley’s dreadlocks?

Particularly on the back of what JK was talking about on Schoey’s Backchat pod about Simmo wanting “clean cut” players when he came to the club so Masten and Schofield both got rid of the hipster beards but JK went “fcuk that” and kept his.

I hope he's wrong but that's what he said. Mentioned Teakle has been asked to do medicals by a few clubs, didn't specifically say WC though.

Simpson needs to wake up

Might be relevant if we didn't have a giant Fijian ruckman with dreadlocks

I just want to iterate that while Culley may become a star there is so little to go off at this stage. I said earlier that if he plays the full year and continues his improvement he would be a likely late first, early second rounder. Maybe even higher if he steps it up further.

But the reality is he's played 3 good games and everyone is frothing over one of them being against Vic Metro which was missing Wardlaw, Ashcroft and Tsatas in the midfield.

It's very speculative and while I like what i've seen I haven't seen enough yet. The thing is he is the prototypical player that recruiters love the look of. Tall, strong midfielder who kicks goals as well. He's literally played 3 games in the midfield as an overager. That is it.

I'd be more than happy with Derksen and Florenca. Oh and just to put it out there guess who Derksen played his best game against. The beagles kicking 4 goals from 22 disposals and 7 marks (oh and the club has seemed to take a shining to players who have dominated against us in the past). At least Derksen is playing at league level and has grown since he played the 1 game of VFL last year as well in round 1 and had 18 disposals, 6 marks and 4 tackles then too. 197cm so is also a good height and is quite athletlic from the couple of games i've seen.
Culley is the exact player you want in a midseason draft. 19 year old beast who slipped through a covid affected draft but is now starting to show something.

He’s the clear first choice on both a needs and best available basis. This year is probably the best year to have an early mid season pick with the lack of exposure for draftees last season. He might be speculative but I feel like that’s what we need to be going for in this particular draft. A speculative 193cm mid who seems to have good attributes and some say is AFL ready, isn’t a skinny flanker who is coming from a long way back to begin with.

We’ll balls this up and pick Florenca and a project ruck/tall for sure. That might cut it in a normal year (last year instead of picking Collins) where the 19 year olds have been passed on for a reason but there’s potential to be some gems in this one. Wont be any sort of common sense or intuition from our recruiting team though based on their track record.

Pick 1: Culley
Pick 2: Florenca

Seems absolutely straightforward, we can't mess this up. Surely

It is the concern, and it is a good point. But he did have an ok season last year, I remember seeing one of his games last year and I thought he did a few really nice things.
Watching him this season, it's not just his dominance in those games that has caught the eye it's his AFL quality traits that I'm willing to have a crack in the MSD on.

He has got a lot of traits;
  • agility in the contest
  • good hands in tight
  • contested marking
  • Long kicking (elite)
  • tackling and pressure in the contest
  • ability to break tackles
  • moves really well and has increased his pace

For a team that is screaming out for young midfielders, he ticks all the boxes and could be something special at AFL level. It's the mid season draft, I'm more than happy to take the risk...
If it were the national draft I'd play it safer with an early pick.

I haven't seen Derksen play, so I hate to comment. From a small amount of footage, he does move bloody well for a big man. But statistically he hasn't been that good either, remove his Beagles game (as someone already mentioned) which inflates his numbers big time, but then it does for everyone.

He’s played 3 games.

17 disposals, 6 marks, 10 hitouts and 2 goals against West Perth wasn’t a bad debut either.
