Re: The "Lloyd" end - WTF?

Fair enough, so I assume you have no issue in Collingwood renaming the GSS the McGuire stand (this is 1 example) when Collingwood play Essendon on Anzac Day at the G?

If the MCG allows it, go for your life.

Re: The "Lloyd" end - WTF?

I have never heard a commentator or supporter at the ground say Hawkins wing. Is there an officially sign, don't think so.
Anyway if the AFL and Collins decided to name the wings there a few other players in front of Hawkins based on achievement.

Keith Greig, Robbie Flower, Peter Matera to name a few.

And do you think commentators will call it the Lloyd end over the Coventry End?? Of Course not.

I can tell you for a fact that the Bulldogs have called it that for their home games. Not sure whether they still do however.

And IIRC, isn't the city wing for St.Kilda home games called the Trevor Barker Wing or something along those lines?

It's all a case of Giant who cares. In the end it all means nothing. People will still refer to its original names and its just a way for the club to pay recognition of one of the games all time great full forwards.

Re: The "Lloyd" end - WTF?

Moreso I think it's a pretty disppointing effort from Essendon if they really want to celebrate Lloyd's achievements; a temporary banner covering up an existing memorial every second week? Is that the best they could come up with? I'd be more than a little embarrassed if I were Lloyd.

For what it's worth I tend to agree for the most part.

Were I an Essendon official in the room at that time I would have kept my thinking cap on a little longer.

Would have been a better idea to try and appreciate Lloyds achievements without kicking two already champions in the guts.

That said, for a little multiple choice.... who kicked the first goal at Docklands?

a) Coventry
b) LLoyd
c) Lockett

Re: The "Lloyd" end - WTF?

Given the fact Richo has kicked the most goals at the MCG, can we call one end the Richo end when we play there?:D

Who really cares what they name and end of a ground at a stadium where most teams play minimal games anyway.

It maybe seen as a dishonor to Coventry and Lockett, but my understanding is it's only going to be for Essendon home games.

I can't see a problem with Essendon hanging a banner over the current names for 3 hours a on a few occasions each year.

Non issue as far as I'm concerned.

Very well said Sir. :thumbsu:

Re: The "Lloyd" end - WTF?

I don't think it will effect much. Nobody is going to start calling it the 'Lloyd End', no matter how many banners they put up.

One end can be the Richardson end, the other can be the Matthew end. The SCG shall have the Richo fence.

It's a dishonor and disrespectful. the whole reason of naming the ends after those two players is to honor them and show them respect

If Essendon wanted an end named after an Essendon player then they should have pushed for it before the stadium was completed.

If Essendon are allowed to do this then every home tenant should be allowed to do the same as well. not just afl either, Soccer and Cricket could also change the end names. how is that honoring or respecting Lockett and Coventry?

Does it really matter? It's only going to be for Essendon home games. Everyone else knows them as the Lockett & Coventry ends. Nothing Essendon do will change that.

Exactly. It's not as though the Lockett or Coventry name sign is going ripped down each time Essendon play a home game there.

I don't call them that, in fact I don't even know which end the Lockett and Coventry ends are.

I just call them the La Trobe and Bourke Street ends.

Wasn't it Micheal Long?

Re: The "Lloyd" end - WTF?

Hopefully they do this right and give Lloyd the Coventry End, pointing to the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre.

This is the biggest whinge-fest I have ever seen on BigFooty.

The Coventry and Lockett names were not assigned or decided on by Essendon. When we are playing our home games there we can call it whatever the F we want. The Essendon Football Club has a much bigger obligation to be respectful to Matthew Lloyd than they do anyone else. So get stuffed.

If anything, this is just a great example of how clubs can actually develop their own culture and tradition at their ''home ground'' rather than falling back on the stale, generic AFL.

Lockett and Coventry are true legends of the game. Both kicked over 1000 goals. Lloyd kicked 700-800. Lloyd is a good player but I just don't think its right to do this. If they do Campbell Brown might light it on fire.

No way. It's our "home ground" for those matches, did we name one of the goals at Windy Hill after an oppoositions past player?

just because it's your home ground for 3 hours, 11 weeks of the year doesn't give you the right to change the names of the players that the stadium owners chose to honor

Yes it does. Just accept it will you.
