That Mt Barker oval apparently becoming a bit of a white elephant

Currently without a summer or a winter tennant I believe due to costs

Be interested to know the thoughts of any Mt Barker Football Club people.

Whenever I drive past their ground it looks like I great place to play, in amongst the town and seems like it’d have a great atmosphere with 300-500 people there.

By contrast the new oval looks like it’d be pretty soulless.

I’ve been told the cost is the primary issue, but is the new facility even that great for a local footy club?

Maybe they could bulldoze and start again.

The old oval has its faults, the surface is shocking and there's a real lack of carparking. Mt Barker is a weird footy club, by far the biggest in the hills yet it has less supporters than most.

Probably a fair bit to do with the fact a lot of people from the town have moved there and aren't part of the community itself.

As for the new Summit Sports Park, there's a number of faults really. It was designed by a firm who had never worked on any recreational facilities at all, clubs or the HFL weren't consulted. The clubrooms are tiny, no kitchen facilities, and there's a tiny bar.

The biggest issues though are the multiple entry points and the carparks that dont reallyallow you to pull up to the fence. Unlike city ammos you've gotta pay to get into HFL and other country footy, and to prevent everyone sneaking in for free and the club losing gate takings, they spent 10s of thousands putting up temp fencing.

Once they saw the build they didn't want to move but were forced under contract to do so until this year. The council are still chasing the club for the remainder of the contract.

Classic Mt Barker really, no real thought process was put into what could have been a fantastic sporting venue. Multiple local clubs still train there during winter when their ovals are chewed up..... but that's about it.
