Bont was amazing. He was the difference between two very disappointing teams. St Kilda were atrocious, we were slightly better.
English as much as he had a stinker actually did okay in the centre bounces. He will get better, he just seemed bereft of confidence with ball in hand. He seemed to get worse the longer the game went.
Sweet has to continue to play, can you imagine what would have happened if he didn't play and Ryder didn't injure himself. I don't agree at ll with people who say he doesn't give us enough around the stoppages. I believe he does and is improving.
Khamis, great game. Bevo keep this kid in the team.
Hannan. A weird game, I thought he was horrible but he did a couple of nice things.
West great at the contest. This lad is tough as teak.
Macrae, Libba, Treloar and Dale very good
Dunkley a little disappointing
Gardiner a very good game. I am a massive critic but he played very well
Richards good
Garcia good
Bruce Terrible game, shouldn't be in the team and needs to be ready for 2023
McNeil and JJ worked hard, McNeil should have kicked 3.
Weightman poor
Smith great workrate but disposal was atrocious
JUH as with Khamis. Bevo keep this lad in the team. Ran out of steam after half time, loved his early work.
Keath poor

Overall I am happy to win. Was pissed off at the last quarter. If I was a Saints fan I would be wondering why Ratten had his contract extended.
One thing this game showed us was that we can have multiple scoring options when Naughton isn't in the forward line. It just shows we can swap him around if required.
We will be destroyed by Melbourne if we play in this manner

McNeil's best game for the club imo. He is worth persisting with on the wing.

Garcia also played his best game so far. We have a bit of talent on the list.
McNeil has played plenty of good games. I’m always pleased to see him out there. Garcia is still pretty raw but is going to be very good if he can get a decent run at it.

27 intercept marks for saints, similar to Adelaide game, our disposal was terrible,

our forwards, in particular marra, were poor at bringing it to ground, he played well but he needs to have more intensity for contests he cant mark at.

can someone tell Smith that if you continually run past teammates for handball and short kick receives then you have an obligation not to butcher it

Spot on about the intercept marks.

We either scored or let them mark it. There was no in-between. When we lost the midfield dominance in the last qtr this came home to roost and we looked bog-average.

It was an odd game in terms of the ruck. Really liked the contest that Sweet provided and he chased his guts out a few times for a big guy, but he's a liability anywhere else. English's form is a real worry. Just showing zero touch or judgement of the ball in flight.

Interesting to see what changes we make. If Naughton comes back does Sweet go out and we go with one ruck again and no back-up or Khamis pinch-hitting? Surely we wouldn't put Bruce in there...?

We won some good signs still alive and move on.
If the coaching staff can improve on that.We can technically make finals.
But tall forwards need to Mark, small forwards need to crumb. They didn't ! St Kilda just rebounded at will. The defensive structure broke down again in parts. If The Saints didn't blow chances we could have lost.Keath if injuired or just playing crap .l don't know. Needs to be replaced.Cordy ,Darcy or even Schache or Jamarra can't do worse.
The ruck problem is anybody's guess. If Sweet could only take a grab to compliment his ruck work .But he doesn't !Hopefully English ,Smith and Bruce can be better for the run otherwise season over.

Keath did play on. It was right in front of me. I spewed it got picked up but he definitely moved off the mark.

I needed to watch a replay of it, I got it wrong saying he didn’t move his feet last night. I still don’t think he went off his line, but the reason he got caught after 1 small step is because Butler went over the mark in the first place. Line ball, but one of many questionable decisions last night

It will probably be Bruce that goes in there. Will help him get involved more as well, Witts has come back fine in the ruck from and ACL this year

Mate to be honest don't even care about the Sweet debate anymore. He's clearly a back up and break glass in case of emergency. He had 6 touches 1 mark 9 hitout and that apparently is a very good game yet English had 8 disposals 3 marks and 26 hitouts and he's cooked and off the boil

Tonight gives me hope. For next year.

We were pretty good tonight but geez St Kilda were awful.

It was a good win but we’re still up against it for making the 8. I don’t see us making it.

Need less injuries, no terrible GF loss hanging over us, hopefully some defensive acquisitions in trade and draft week and hopefully we will bounce back next year.

On St Kilda, as I said, they were awful.

I know some on here hate them and I understand that, but it must suck at the moment supporting them.

We live in an age of premiership droughts been broken. Us, Melbourne, Richmond. Geelong a few years before all of the above, Swans a few years before Geelong.

Saints been waiting since 1966, had three golden chances in 2009-10 with probably the best side they’ve ever had, and couldn’t nail one of them.

Since then, us, Richmond and Melbourne all broken their drought.

I’m actually convinced after tonight that St. Kilda don’t currently have a team that can win a flag.

I have a few Saints supporting friends - all great people who were thrilled for me when we won in 16 - all who’ve supported the Saints through bleak times and have watched on as all the above teams I mentioned broke their flag drought, and I’d dearly love for the Saints to win them a flag.

I feel sorry for them. I really wish they’d get to see a flag.

I know things can change but looking at St. Kilda tonight I was honestly wondering whether or not they’ll ever get it together and win one.
I’ve always disliked St Kilda but with several Saints supporters in the extended family I have to curb my feelings a bit. Yes, my rels were also good when we won our flag. I hoped they’d be next but unfortunately it was flog Melbourne 😡.

Perhaps they’re cursed… or maybe they just need to get the umpires onside 😉

Shades of Nick Riewoldt in that dive Max King took last night. Also why did we give up a 6,6,6 free kick last night? Because Mara’s foot touches the goal square?

Our mids are in the business of winning clearances regardless of who’s rucking. It’s been done to death, we don’t need to go over it again

Sweet offers less on the field than just about any player on any list in the comp at the moment and tonight’s game was another example of that.

9 hit outs and did sweet * all across the rest of the game. If there’s any game for the Sweet Fanatics to come to the realisation he doesn’t make our team better tonight was it. Some think English had a shocker and still made Sweet look like he’d won an on field match day experience in a raffle.

Sorry VP but the obsession with Sweet now seems at a crazy coo coo level. He could sit on the bench as the medical sub all game and some in here would post how well the 2 ruck tactic worked with him in the team.
Watched him with great interest live at Sandringham last weekend. He certainly got his fair share of hitouts, 30 in fact, but Tom Campbell smashed him for around the ground effectiveness. And this has been Sweet's Achilles heel for a very long time. The only mitigating factor could be he played last night off only a 5 day break. Still think we need to find a better ruck option next year or, hopefully Darcy is ready to go.

That could be a contributing factor in his poor ruck numbers. His output was probably the worse it’s been in any game he’s played.

The quicker we bring in another Fwd/Ruck, whether Lobb, or Darcy or whoever, the sooner we become a better balanced team. Whoever it is, needs to be able to contribute up forward and around the ground first and foremost. And then just be able to chop out time in ruck without getting beaten. Breaking even is fine with the midfield we have.

Sam Darcy. He's the answer.

I'm no Sweet fanatic. He is an average ruckman. But he could turn into a nank, Witts type. Not all rucks play like NicNat, Gawn or Grundy.
He is never going to improve if he doesn't get opportunity and from what i have seen he is improving every game.
Too many people on here think he should be Gary Dempsey. For me he can do a role like Ben Hudson did with us. Nothing flashy but a big presence at stoppage that nullifies a talented ruckman and lets our mids go to work at the drop of the ball.
He offers more in ruck contests than Tim but certainly not as much around the ground.
He is never going to win a B&F but he just needs to continue to be a physical presence on the ground and he's doing a good job.

Agree with this. Darcy a bit light for ruck? Im not sure on the Lobb staus but he woulkd be fine as a 25% ruck with Tim at 70% and a mix of Bruce, Naughton, JUH, Buku for the last 5%.
I am not convinced we will get Lobb though.

He needs to take ayahuasca and come to the conclusion that he is a result of the causal nexus, not a disconnected agent acting upon the world, but born of it, connected and interdependent on all things. Only then will he unlock his potential.
Thanks. I’ll pass that on.
Not sure it warrants a payment though.
