What was with the first 2 (maybe 3) saints goals from soft free kicks, and that play on call from Keefs mark? The ump NUMBER 14 (yes, I won't forget) copped a barrage from me .

What about the free that Squib Hill got for to high against Garcia, everybody seen he just dropped.

Did someone at the game notice whether our forwards were playing up the ground further. Again our forwards appear to be trying to go to certain places rather than read the play.

Wilkie just stayed at the 45 on the ball side and watched the ball - got ball. Ended up playing a lot near west on the HBF.

So any pressure upground on the ball and it is a hack kick not to the planned area and will always be on the same ball side - we are not going to back kick to 45.

We seem to need time and space to kick over the intercept to 30 or change up and kick shorter to 50 and shoot or pass from there.

Overall - was a horrible last quarter but OK up till then. Bont and Richards both had special games - really impressed by Ed’s decision making - was his knock but now his strength - maybe like Matty Boyd. Mostly I love his hardness.

Macrae, Libba, Dale and Trelor especially good. JUH kicked three and seems to enjoy the responsibility. Kids García, Khamis, West really good and I thought McNeil continues to show potential and speed that we miss.

Smith made a difference in breakout but jeez I am not sure I have seen that many poor kicks and handballs. We know his ability and this is just cobwebs.

Same for Juice - even a poor game and we look more dangerous. English made progress in the are we want but dropped his strength - shows how hard it is to bash in and be a onball runner. I am OK with his game.

Hannan - we are all mixed between putrid and OK. His speed is a weapon but he runs himself into trouble and then panics and makes very poor decisions - has very little defensive skill and does not lay body contact on the air. I don’t agree with the move but I reckon Bevo will focus on the improvement. I would still prefer Crozier who has the ability just needs to find his confidence.

Williams is still a worry - he has shown he has the ability but has lost his confidence and with it his weapons. To get back to this I would work on his strength and power in the gym - don’t think wing is the answer - doesn’t have the speed. But would also play him inside mid a bit as part of getting him to use his power.

Next week we get back: Naughty, Hunter and maybe Daniel and can now choose Schache, McLean. McLean is too good to leave out.

Team for Melb:

Weightman Bruce JUH

West Naughty García

English Bont Libba
Hunter Macrae Smith

Trelor Keath Dale

Khamis Gardner Red

Dunkley Daniel Sweet McLean (Crozier, Williams)

The Melb players that have toasted us are:

  • Petracca (put Dunkley and West on to him),
  • Lever - make him chase Naughty up the ground (they may anticipate this and play Smith) and
  • Fritsch - do we think Khamis is ready? Williams too slow - Crozier out of form. Dale not defensive enough and Red would be taken away from the role he plays as covering for others? May need to be Red. Ironically - I’d he could actually put pressure on the forward Hannan has the speed but maybe not the agility and decision making to play on him.

Makes Libba look positively handsome.

Impressive performance. Shame we took the foot off in the last and let the margin crawl back closer but we played very well for three quarters. Bont was back to his best, Libba immense again and the backline was pretty solid. Loved Ed Richards game in particular. Also loving Rhylee West, he was one who always got dropped after one subpar game. Its great that they've finally given him opportunities and he has taken his chance. He is going to be great.

Saints were incredibly bad. They have been putrid for the last six weeks after a pretty good start to the year. I rate quite a few of their players and I don't think they should be as bad as what they are (although I'm not sure how the Mason Wood's and Jimmy Webster's of the world are walkup starters still). Wilkie and Battle were great for them but didn't have many helpers.

What was impressive about it?

Reading through the game day thread (where people were calling the game as it was happening) and the positive comments in the post-mortem (where people are re-imagining the game after the fact) reads like two different games.

We were BAD. But as you said the Saints were incredibly bad.

One thing I did notice regarding Darcy last week was not so much about how many hitouts he got but how well he positioned himself in the contests. He hasn't yet got the bulk to shift AFL standard rucks but you can see the smarts he already has to know how and where to tap the ball.
No idea if the club is going to give him an opportunity this year but if I was a selector I'd want to see it.

Yeah, he does a lot of things right.

Definitely wouldn’t be upset if he debuted this year.

Hope I'm not giving away club secrets....

Adz on SEN, was quizzed about

1657937037295.png

answer was Bevo's weekly theme...Adz understanding "something about a buffallo, they run in packs or something, so I thought, why not?"

Not being able to help myself I did some googling looking for a good buffallo pic, however what I found was something better.....check out the last word!

Chance, or coincidence?

What does the Hook em Horns hand sign mean?
Hook ’em Horns. The “Hook ’em Horns” hand sign is a gesture used to show support for the University of Texas at Austin, and particularly, for the university’s Longhorn athletic teams. Developed by students at the university in 1955, its use continues today. It is performed with the hand facing forward, index and pinky fingers extended....Students and alumni of the university employ a greeting consisting of the phrase "Hook 'em" or "Hook 'em Horns" and also use the phrase as a parting good-bye or as the closing line in a letter or story. The gesture is meant to approximate the shape of the head and horns of the UT mascot, the Texas Longhorn Bevo.

I’m the glass-half-full type and my glasses are rose-coloured but even so I thought it was a pretty unimpressive win. As you say, Saints were worse. But they had 2 more scoring shots; if they’d been accurate it could have been a different story.

I wouldnt be getting too excited over Khamis yet, he looks a bit nervous under pressure and still needs plenty of time to develop. Positive signs though

Yeah some bad skill errors under little pressure.

Has upside with his marking, pace etc but needs to become reliable in all respects. Suspect he and Gardner could just about cause your average supporter a coronary if they were at their worst at the same time.

Given the season is mostly shot I’m happy to see him get the opportunity to show his wares.

Sinclair was good too and is a gun, but the only lists I wouldn't take over theirs are Hawks and Adelaide. Stuck in no man's land with no hope of improvement.

I was excited about Khamis last night. I agree he turned the ball over too much and he needs to work on his disposal but when it comes to getting the ball, taking an intercept mark, killing the ball or spoiling an opponent I thought he showed plenty.
I also thought McNeil played well but if he is going to be a low possession player he needs to kick those set shots. All in all the pups all did well last night.

I think the big positive from last night was the combined form of those very early in their career;

  • Khamis played his best game as an intercepting defender,
  • Jamarra had his most productive game as a kpf despite Naughtons absence,
  • Garcia had probably his most even contribution,
  • West continued his solid form.
    - Sweet was serviceable against good opposition.

As a whole that's a most encouraging collective performance.

Can anyone explain this significance of this?:

Saw Bont & Adz doing it too.....
Weekly theme from left field, typical Bevo. Something to do with the buffalo. When they are individuals they are easy prey for the lion pack. When they run in packs they can beat a pack of lions.

That's why I think we'll be ok.

There is so much "what happened to the Bulldogs" because we made a GF and dropped off again. Things haven't gone our way but I'm certain we will bounce back next season and we may still play a final this year.

This narrative is only created because the Hawks and Lions threepeated and Richmond got 3/4. It's a bloody hard thing to do and everything has to go right. Look at Melbourne this year. Dominating, a few injuries to the key player equivalents we had and they've lost 4 out of their last 6. I'm happy if we are in a GF every 5 years with the odd down year to blood new talent

The future is bright with West, Buku, Garcia, Bedendo, Richards, Naughty, Cleary, Juh, Darcy...could you say that for the Saints or other teams? Maybe I'm biased, but we have some great depth for the next wave.
Bookmark a flag within next 3 years
That's why it's important to hang onto 1st round picks to keep the talent coming through. Having said that for the right KPD I would trade it this year as it is a big gap in our side right now

If you mixed early Luke Dahlhaus together with Clay Smith do you get Garcia?

Just to give the opposition some credit, I don’t think I’ve seen a worse performance than Mason Wood’s last night.

My eyes. They bleed.

Saints took him from North Melbourne’s reject pile . That’s not a great recruiting tactic. They should have recruited players from Footscray like we do. That is the best plan.
