Sam Darcy. He's the answer.

Not just yet. As good as he’s going to be, I’d say it’ll be 12-24mths before we see any sort of results from a English/Darcy combination. At the earliest. And that’s if that’s the path the club chooses to go down.

If he was playing from next week, we’d still be talking about the short term void needing to be filled.

Just my prediction on what Beveridge would do/historically has done.

Beveridge spent years developing a massively underdeveloped English. In the ruck. Darcy wouldn't have to spend more than 20-30% game time in the ruck (for several years) and would have experienced players like Naughton and Bruce taking the heat off him up forward.

Bev's going to fast track him is my prediction. He's the dual forward/ruck type beveridge dreams of that is tall/will be big enough to ruck but also can mark and kick the footy.

He could be ready to play 15-20 games as early as next year. Darcy is head and shoulders above English in terms of development at the same age. English wasn't even on an AFL list and was drafted 1 year later.

JUH did some special things. Good to see him kick some goals from other avenues. Showed how great his skills and movement are. It’s easy to forget that his 197cms.

Really thought it could be his “breakout” game at half time

Disappointingly quite second half but the signs are there. Needs to play further up ground when Naughton returns

Watching replay now. At the game it looked like a mark and he moved off the mark.
If it was called touched it should have been a ballup.
Note: I didn't see a touched call. Tough but right call in my opinion
I thought it was a mark watching it on Tv. Keath thought it was too. Correct call, but it sucked. Just like BTs barracking in the last qtr

I'm no Sweet fanatic. He is an average ruckman. But he could turn into a nank, Witts type. Not all rucks play like NicNat, Gawn or Grundy.
He is never going to improve if he doesn't get opportunity and from what i have seen he is improving every game.
Too many people on here think he should be Gary Dempsey. For me he can do a role like Ben Hudson did with us. Nothing flashy but a big presence at stoppage that nullifies a talented ruckman and lets our mids go to work at the drop of the ball.
He offers more in ruck contests than Tim but certainly not as much around the ground.
He is never going to win a B&F but he just needs to continue to be a physical presence on the ground and he's doing a good job.
Exactly this. We have the gun mids to do the work in the middle, Sweet is the best we have at the moment so use him.

Shades of Nick Riewoldt in that dive Max King took last night. Also why did we give up a 6,6,6 free kick last night? Because Mara’s foot touches the goal square?
Yep Marra was out of the square. Was pretty funny actually - everyone turned back to him and he sheepishly shuffled back into the square. Very comical!

He needs to develop in the 2’s. That’s what that league is for. No team can afford to play with 17 too often.

We also need to stop talking about him becoming the number 1 ruck. He’s not going to be that, unless he miraculously overtakes English’s output or English gets traded, dies or decides to take a sabbatical to walk the earth as an oversized gipsy.

At current, Sweets career plays out as one of the below...

1. He plays second fiddle/back up ruck from here on in. Getting a call up due to injuries.

2. Develops his around the ground game, contributing in our fwd 50 and getting his hands on the ball both at ground and areal levels. And then pushes out the Lobb/Darcy/Schache that plays the Fwd/Ruck role.

3. The coaches decide that having a ruck system that had its peak popularity in the 90’s is what’s best for the team and Sweet then becomes the number one ruck.

There’s not a lot of options for Sweet at the moment. He needs to play 2’s, work on his many weakness, come in and do his best when we have injuries and hope he’s another victim of the dreaded Tall Player Late Development Syndrome.

Saints got a goal from that centre free which got them up and going in the last qtr. Thankfully we weathered their insipid comeback.

I agree. Darcy playing Fwd/Ruck in combination is the dream.

I think the physical development is the thing that needs to come on quickly for him to impact.

Lock him in the gym from Oct-Feb and see how he comes out the other end. Fast track that beast rig of his.

Is it just me or has Bont slimmed down his legs the last few years? 93kg this year compared to 96kg at his peak. Maybe for longevity?
Please tell me the secret to slimming down the legs!

Did you see Libba move in when some Saints flog wanted to sledge Baz and stir him up? A couple of others also got some separation between them. Almost as if they were prepared for something like that...

But really, Saints? You guys should be the last ones and blah blah blah

One thing I did notice regarding Darcy last week was not so much about how many hitouts he got but how well he positioned himself in the contests. He hasn't yet got the bulk to shift AFL standard rucks but you can see the smarts he already has to know how and where to tap the ball.
No idea if the club is going to give him an opportunity this year but if I was a selector I'd want to see it.

Impressive performance. Shame we took the foot off in the last and let the margin crawl back closer but we played very well for three quarters. Bont was back to his best, Libba immense again and the backline was pretty solid. Loved Ed Richards game in particular. Also loving Rhylee West, he was one who always got dropped after one subpar game. Its great that they've finally given him opportunities and he has taken his chance. He is going to be great.

Saints were incredibly bad. They have been putrid for the last six weeks after a pretty good start to the year. I rate quite a few of their players and I don't think they should be as bad as what they are (although I'm not sure how the Mason Wood's and Jimmy Webster's of the world are walkup starters still). Wilkie and Battle were great for them but didn't have many helpers.
