You aren't missing much, trust me. Pretty much a regurgitation of the articles in the HS. Journo (Holmes I think?) not scrutinising him whatsoever.
Tracey Holmes? I heard her interviewed on SEN the other morning and decided then it was not an interview I would bother watching. Sounded very pro Hird, Essendon etc and very anti ASADA, AFL etc. Tried to pass herself off as neutral, but her bias was obvious. I doubt very much Hird will get asked the real hard questions

Nope, didn't even follow up the questions she asked. Judging by her previous reactions to the saga, I wasn't surprised at all.

Ba ha ha if you remember those days
What a pair

Got to love the hilarious vic media for trashing Holmes for being partisan #hypocrites. Also makes me think there's a bit of a Melbourne Sydney thing going on.

Having said that, another really stupid decision by Hird. He achieves nothing by doing what was always going to be perceived as a soft interview and opens himself up to severe ridicule. He was best served by staying silent or if he really wanted to speak then do so on local mainstream media in an environment where people couldn't accuse him of avoiding tough questions.

Following James Hird's exclusive interview with the ABC, look back at some of the former Essendon coach's best quotes about the supplements saga that engulfed the AFL club.

On doing more to prevent the scandal and potentially ending careers:
It is not just 2016 that it has wiped off (for the players) and potentially beyond but it has been 2013, '14 and '15 where they weren't able to get the opportunity to play the football to their ability.

I have a level of responsibility in that. I should have known more. I should have done more when the opportunity came.

I feel extremely guilty for that and bad for that. I can only apologise for that. I made decisions in real time that in hindsight, I think were wrong.

On the impact of his errors as coach:
I think it is hard to give you what my level of responsibility was. You can talk about the hierarchy and the fact I was on a different line and they weren't responsible for me. But I had a big impact on that football club.

It was a football club that I loved and I promised the players I would create an environment for them.

On the legality of the substances given to players:
At no time did I ever, ever consider that banned or performance enhancing drugs would be at our club.

It is just something that never entered my mind. I still to this date don't believe that anything banned was given to our players.

On Stephen Dank's knowledge of the substances given to players.
Sports scientist Stephen Dank can say for certain what they were injected with.

But if that is the case, if no one can say for certain what they were injected with, how can 34 men be found guilty?

No one knows except Stephen Dank what they put in those injections. I don't see why he would do it.

On the AFL denying Essendon and its players a fair hearing:
I don't feel like a victim myself but those 34 players are victims of this situation, a situation that, at the first instance, is the responsibility of the Essendon football club.

The football club and as a part that I had in it, has to put up its hand and say we made mistakes.

Those mistakes were compounded by people in authority and outside the club.

When I feel guilt, sadness, devastation for the players, I am also upset at the way the procedural fairness or process was enacted to deny our players procedural fairness and the football club fairness.

On club doctor Bruce Reid sharing some of the blame:
We all should have done more and Bruce would admit he should have done more as well.

I don't think Bruce should have to leave the Essendon football club.

Bruce's primary concern at all times is the welfare of players. Bruce is a very, very good man. I think he has paid a price - not the price that the players have paid - the players have paid the ultimate price for this and their careers, a lot of them, are either ruined or they have gone back a long way.

I don't know whether Bruce has taken enough responsibility or not. That is something you will have to ask Bruce but I do know that he has worn a lot of criticism for this.

On the length of ASADA's investigation:
There is no doubt that the Federal Court case prolonged it. But that Federal Court case wasn't about my own reputation. That was about trying to get natural justice or due process for the players. The players weren't given due process. The evidence that was given to ASADA was influenced by the AFL.

I don't have to say it because the Federal Court found that the AFL tried to influence the writing of the report and influenced the way information was presented.

I think that it might have prolonged it and I can understand why the AFL, why ASADA, why WADA and CAS want to send a strong message to drug cheats and athletes around the world, it is an important message. Drugs aren't good and they shouldn't be in sport. Unfortunately in this case, and that is why I went to the Federal Court, 34 men were the sacrificial lambs to send that message and that is not good enough.

You cannot sacrifice 34 innocent men to send a message like that. Although it is a good message, you cannot sacrifice 34 men.

On the impact on his family:
There is a lot of personal friends that have gone. I think the toll on the family is - it has been very bad but, as I said, it is not about us. It is about the 34 players.

My children have lived it, my oldest daughter is 16. She has seen it. My son is - my youngest son is six. It has been a huge part of his life. As I said, that victim role for us, it has to be about the players. We can sit back with my friends and my family and talk about it in private but I think that the real impact is on 34 players. They are sitting there going 'What have I done? I have done nothing wrong, why am I in this position?'

Hird said:
The idea around the program was that it was a healthy program for the players to become better footballers and look after them later in life so they didn't become old [with] arthritis like a lot of us have and the idea was everything had to be put by the doctor.

Didn't CAS find the only thymosin that could have done what they wanted was the banned one? Seemingy Essendon had a clear purpose in mind.

Also while Hird had "wasn't part of that overseeing role" he seems to have had a sound knowledge of the program occurring and the reasons why. Without a science/medical background it seems fair that Hird wouldn't be able to explain the ins and outs and would rely on experts to ensure the injections complied, but he must never have followed this up with Dr Reid.

Having only read a few quotes, was Hird asked about the coaches including himself receiving injections?

Most quotes reference the players specifically. I wonder if this was intended or just a result of the bans being fresh.

I would have liked these questions to be asked:

• Were the same checks and balances supposed to be in play for the coaches?

• Did Hird seek the advice of Reid before his injections or ask what was in them?

• Did Hird ask Reid about the rumoured side effects he encountered?

Of course he never asked Reid those questions.

This whole alleged overseeing by Dr Reid is a total lie. The evidence, in particular Hird'd texts/emails to others, show that he was purposely attemting to not involve Reid because he was "not going with the program".

With Hird it's always everyone else's fault

I think it's totally hilarious that Hird has Dean Robinson (with his faithful mad scientist Danks at his side) basically running the whole football department without him knowing.

It's the biggest crock of shit I've ever heard.

I must have missed this question:

"James can you tell us who told the players to lie to ASADA?"
You'd think a 'professional' interviewer/journo would come up with the most basic of questions wouldn't you?

Wouldn't have mattered;
"I can't speak for the players, all I know is I had nothing to do with it".
"I was in Paris, trying to recover from the shock of what had transpired at the club".
"To this day, I still cannot find the person responsible for this nasty sequence of events".
"Events I might add that have had a huge impact on my family life, my state of well being, my pride, my employment prospects, my health, my appearance and my football club".
"Oh and the supporters"
