DONT TRADE CARLTONS PICK

I cannot remember Mark Harvey coaching Brisbane... must have dozed off in 2013

I remember a few. I remember when Malthouse was sacked. The media was circling him badly back then and baiting him.

It was like Bigfooty without moderators.

Seeing Ben Allan's name has jogged my memory about something I heard a while back.

That in the early days of the Dockers he was the highest paid player in the AFL.

Higher than Carey, Buckley, Harvey, Grant etc.

Not sure if true

Dont forget though back in the 90s it was total anarchy by the Clubs.

Players would buy houses for say $100k and a supporter would buy it off them for $1m.

Thats how the Roos kept Carey etc with other Clubs.

Carey's actual salary and what he claimed probably two different numbers.

I think we're looking at this the wrong way. What would it take to get pick 2 from the Gold Coast? There are only a few players of the table, Sloane obviously, anyone else? Our first 2020 and Doedee? Greenwood? For Anderson and Rowell? Gotta give something good

Yes I want elite talent that stays. The Afl needs to bring in rules similar to the NBA where first round players can't leave for 5 years unless its the clubs choice. I am sick of top end talent walking out the door from interstate clubs. Sometimes pick 5 is better than pick 1. All depends on our recruitment staff getting it right and luck. If we can get a forward and mid with a single pick it's a win win. Either way we are in a good position. When i hear people like brereton arrogantly saying if we take anderson he will definitely come back to hawthorn at some stage it annoys me. I don't like Brereton but he is probably correct in his assessment. I wouldn't be swapping pick 1 for Grundy anyway in our current predicament. If he generally wants to come home we should do this deal when out of contract.

but but but.. then we won't get rankine!

You mean the same club that traded Lachie Weller for Pick 2?

Interesting. I've been of the view that we will not take Carlton's pick to the draft, the risk of Rowell/Anderson leaving is too great. If we had picks 1 and 2 that changes everything.

I would trade pick 1 for 2 picks in the top 10 if offered. I would then use one pick on Luko and with the other get the best mid with some speed. Next year go after Grundy when out of contract. My worry is we go after Anderson with pick 1 and he leaves to hawthorn after 2 years.

don't tell me that we're in the running to steal another potential #1 pick

I'd only be trading pick 1 for 2 top 10 picks so we can nail those two SA lads from Norwood.

To me both Rowell and Anderson no matter how good they are will return to Victoria, the way we do our pay structure means they wouldn't even last till free agency.

It’s pretty even draft from reports, wouldn’t Crows rather trade it for player and mid first round? I think good value. Grundy is a gun ruck

Grundy and Collingwoods first Rd for Number 1?

Unfortunately, it's likely to be the other way around - Pick 1 and something from our 2020 draft for Grundy.

Am I correct in saying this is likely to be our highest pick ever? I mean our highest pick was what, 7 or 8 or something? So unless Carlton rise 7 spots up the ladder this will be the highest pick in our history.

We have to use it. Cannot trade it away. If you have an argument against it, I’d like to hear it.

Oh comfortably. Our highest is 7, and it's better to not talk about who we selected with that*.

* We did accidentally trade out pick 2 however.

The best mid with some speed will be gone after pick 2...The name's Anderson

Or more like something from our 2020 & 2021 drafts when he is out of contract next year..pick 1 must be quarantined and used on the best mid this year OR to bring luko ir rankine back

Collingwood won't match whatever offer we fire at him next year. Would be stupid to do so (which says a lot about the offer we'll need to do it).

If you have dreams of Grundy, be prepared to give up pick 1, because we won't wait until next year and risk losing him. The best result for us however is him resigning with Collingwood at 1.1-1.2 million, that is not a contract that'll end well for us, especially considering that we're likely to be setting up a new core during this time.

Trading pick 1 is madness - it's pick 1!! No-one trades pick 1, especially after the Trent Croad debacle.
You'd want a godfather offer from somewhere just to get out of bed.

The amount is not so much the problem if its $1.1 or so, its more the years. He would probably want a massive 6 year deal.

We have Tex in our forward lines along with Betts and Jenkins till at least 2020 R23. Thats when those long contracts hurt the most.

The trading landscape has changed so much over just the last few years. Good luck trying to keep a pick 1 or 2 Vic Metro kid long term.

The better Rowell and Anderson are just makes the risk of them returning home even greater. Trading the pick is not about not rating them.

There's value in trading the pick, arguably more value if these two kids have no intention of staying long term.

Also if anyone's thinking, 'well even if they decide to go home we'll get good compensation', they won't be requesting a trade back to bottom teams with great picks.

At that point it's two first rounders, and really, if you're good enough you can make them work.

The main thing is manage your cap well, and be a contender/of have a good plan to be a contender. If you get buy in, you'll keep them providing you have the money (and some other club hasn't gotten completely desperate). If you sit there and are that shit scared about taking a talent like this because "oh they might go home one day", pack it in and fold the club.

Yep, it's a big risk but the opportunity cost of doing anything else is way too huge.

I would only trade the pick if it meant getting Lukosius and or Rankine. Getting Rowell and Anderson only to lose them within 2-3 years scares the **** out of me.
That Rowell is a self avowed carlton fan is a worry and Anderson is the son of a hawthorn player is alsoa worry. What is also a worry is that Rowell and Anderson are very close mates etc and if one ends up in Melbourne, how long before the other wants to head back. These are all the things we need to be absolutely clear on before using pick 1 on one of them. Plenty will say that we will back ourselves in to retain either, but what if it is at the expense of Grundy who may want to come home and be here for the remainder of his career. Personally I still would like us to try for Luko or Rankine this year - both are going to be stars and could be with us for virtually their entire career

Potentially. It may be that a Tahaney really stamps himself as a top 3 pick could change it up (and it's been the type of player we've seemed to like recently). Or we're wanting to cut deeper list wise and there is a good trading partner which gets us two first round picks for this type of player. Lots of flexibility though which is a really nice situation to be in however.

Who you are friends with means sweet **** all. Rowell won't leave because of where Anderson is, and vice versa. You may as well be paranoid the world is going to end the day before the draft as it would be equally as accurate of a concern.

Rowell being a Carlton fan is the literal opposite of being concerning. Club ties die the moment you are drafted and what that tells me is he is a deeply loyal dude who has no qualms roughing out a shit situation. Anderson is concerning, but that's because his dad by memory has some involvement with Hawthorn.

I am saying you would want to be absolutely sure that none of these connections and friendships will have an impact on drafting him and expecting him to be here for the long haul..This is pick 1 and it holds great value and if there is even a skerrick of risk that Rowell or Anderson will want to leave after a few years, then what else can you do with the pick (go after Grundy or Luko or Rankine, split it into multiple high picks and maybe a player etc etc) - what we need to do is absolutely nail this pick however we use it
