Each club's biggest rival/s

I know the showdowns are the biggest games of the year here but for me, I've always associated West Coast Eagles as Adelaide's biggest rivalry.

Some of the best matches I've seen over the last 20 years have been Eagles vs Crows. Been some brutal contests. Very underrated match-up.

Yes true! From 1990 when Adelaide was a thought and WC were top, VIC had 11 clubs and we very much viewed West Coast as where we thought we should be! Then the premierships equalled and we thought we with them were at the top, over any Collingwood or Hawthorn. So they've won twice this century and we haven't but. For all this, is why I view the Weagles as our biggest rival.
Aren't they more like the club you should be but aren't?

A lot of people tell me it's Carlton but honestly I feel like our two clubs haven't both been genuinely up at the same time for a very long time. Maybe that would reignite the rivalry but I feel like Richmond right now has a bigger rivalry with other clubs on field at the moment.

I dont feel like we have a natural number 1 rival at this point in time. Yes there are historic rivalries, maybe Collingwood is the strongest of those at the moment.

Grant Thomas vs rucks was a very underrated rivalry in the AFL

Guy was a stubborn prick when it came to them
Had the feeling Thomas tried pretty hard not to win GF's. Had the best of lists for a couple of years seemed if he just wanted to be controversial.

Pretty much. It's nearly 40 years now. 1980-1982 was the last time they were both really strong clubs. The odd final since but at no time were both genuine contenders.

Essendon for the local rivalry and banter with mates. Also we flog them every year and I love it.

GWS for the pure hatred rivalry. Always rough games with a lot of dirty stuff going on. How a rivalry should be.

We had fantastic rivalries with Essendon ( swinging the jacket Sheedy kicked that off) and also with Sydney in the mid 00s . But Freo hands down now
Collingwood have always been a consistent grudge match for us. Their one point over us at Optus in the finals is just another classic final between us and them

One between the fans is Dogs and Dons. No actual rivalry but the fans for both teams hate the other. I know alot of Dons fans that only tolerate the Dogs cause I and other mates go for them and vice-versa. There is no rivalry between the clubs though. Haven't played each other in a final since 1953!
I was ahead of my time

For Hawthorn I would say it's:

Essendon > 80s GFs, brawls, Kevin Sheedy accusing Hawks of taking drugs pre 84 GF, line in the sand game, Lloyd taking out Sewell, Sam Mitchell mock self injecting to Bombers players.
Pure hatred.

Gap...

Geelong > Finals clashes 89 (GF), 91, 00, 08 (GF), 11, 13, 14, 16. Matthews taking out Bruns, The Kennett curse, Hawkins goal after the siren, close games.
Hate but respect.

Bigger Gap..

Sydney > 12 and 14 GFs, Buddy defecting to the Swans, Josh Kennedy vs Tom Mitchell.
Hate smoothed over abit recently.

Gap...

North > 70s GFs, Finals in 94, 00, 07 all going North's way, Lake choking Petrie in 14, Hodge and Lewis taking out North players in 15, always seems to be abit of heat in matches.
Lingering, annoying, slight hate.
r..fle
we have no absolute enemies..we have plenty of people who play against us.. who know it is rough nuts dude.. we all have this.. no one has really
died playing footy.. take this in it's proper essence...

As an outsider, Cats Tiges these days is very good value, espesh with Scott only very recently accepting RFC's superiority, having been brought to tears. The rivalry had its beginning in 67 GF with Cats. It was hot news at the time, some Cats not willing to accept the loss. Come round to 69 semi final, Tiges turned in one of the great final performances hammering them by 100 plus. Geelong didn't recover for over a decade. Can they recover from RFCs recent domination?

As a West Coast fan, I fee the same way about Adelaide. As if there is a strange kinship between the two clubs, for whatever reason.

Being a kid in the 90's I was really worried about Adelaide winning more Premierships than West Coast, and then there was the 05/06 Preliminary finals.

I'd say West Coast's biggest rivalry has become Collingwood.

9 finals, 8 of which were decided by less than 20 points, including a draw, a game in extra time, a GF with a 5 point margin and a gutsy 1 point win away from home.

Two big clubs that have a long history of sustained success.

Collingwood supporters might try and deny it and nominate one of their Victorian rivals ahead of West Coast, but if you ask them what their best wins and most painful losses have been over the last 10 years, majority of them would nominate 2020 Elimination Final, 2018 Grand Final and R17 2019 getting an honourable mention.

Although there hasn't been anything or note lately, if Sydney/West Coast are ever back up again at the same time, or play in an important game, I could see a lot of the build up being centred around the rivalry of the mid 00's, and I could see that rivalry being revived in the future.

Fremantle aren't really our rivals, more like our punching bags.

It's funny how Collingwood vs West Coast hasn't ever developed into a notable rivalry given the amount of close finals. Sort of like Geelong and Collingwood even though that's the most common finals match up in AFL/VFL history.

I think it's probably due to the circumstances surrounding every notable West Coast vs Collingwood final.
Collingwood beat arch rivals Richmond the week before the 2018 grand final so I guess most of the attention went there. I think most Collingwood supporters nominate that prelim as the best recent Collingwood win.
Collingwood over achieved in both the 2020 EF + 2007 semi final victories so they were probably just stoked to make it to the next week. Played a dominant Geelong the following week on both occasions, so the attention went there.
Even going back to the 1990 final, more attention was on Collingwood's match up with Essendon than West Coast.

That's just a possible explanation, but it's an interesting one. Compare that to Hawthorn vs Sydney where it turned into a genuine rivalry because it had several elements to it. Multiple grand final match ups, close games, Buddy's high profile move etc.

Our last 30 against Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon are 27-3.

The three losses all to Collingwood.

They are our rivals and it's been fun dominating them.

For richmond, it's Carlton and Collingwood.

Carlton have lost to Richmond in four Grand finals. Have a 21-6 finals record agaisnt the Tigers.

Whilst Richmond lost to Collingwood in four Grand finals aswell, three in a row.

Essendon is a rivalry based on nothing more than we are both big clubs.
Will always savour ‘82. Very few players transition between the two clubs shows that you are one of the other. Start every season recently despite our poor performance shows the depth of the rivalry. THE_GUN about the only Tigers supporter I have ever tolerated.

Richmond have stopped Carlton frkm winning 4 grand finals.

They have a 21-6 record against Carlton in finals.

Carlton absolutely loathe Richmond, without Richmond they'd no doubt have 20 premierships.
Thus the rivalry. However, probably Collingwood then Essendon as far as base level hatred. We haven’t held up our end of any bargain for quite some time though.
