I’m trying to forget we wasted pick 6 on him but you keep reminding us!

Let’s say McAsey plays VFL this year to the same standard he has SANFL, do you think that will impact him being picked up for 2024?

What are the circumstances of him playing VFL though?

I think if he declares his head isn't in the game and has things to overcome and plays poorly in the VFL then probably not.

If he stays on our list, plays just as poorly in SANFL or not at all - then says it was homesickness and a move back home to be with family there will be no shortage of teams signing him up.

I doubt it very much he will be back and we will release him to play VFL or he walks away from playing altogether for the year.

If it’s the former, I expect he will continue to play poorly because he’s not very good. If he has a year off he ain’t getting drafted.

What I want to know is whether there was another first round KPP given a second chance on an AFL list after producing poor performances at reserves level

Top draftees performing badly in the SANFL/VFL/WAFL is so rare that it's hard to find many examples
I was going to say orourke but it looks like he had some very good neafl games

I didn't hang s**t on Durdin ....he's just a very poor player

Yes, I see a lot in McAasey, kid has talent ....but you can't play if your head's not in the right space.

More & more kids coming into the AFL system are lacking the resilience these days .... am I saying "soft" ....yes I probably am
So keays cost nothing whats uour excuse there ?

And extended to their club giving up on playing him in the position he was drafted even though they had no depth in that position

I still say mcasey is 100 times better than angwin i ever was that pick takes the cake

Don't know why people are banging on about a player with mental health issues as being a dud .....or Jones, who IMO watching replays has that combo of speed & power, along with a fierce desire ...just not an elite footy thinker ....but he also is no dud

What about these ....who no-one talks about:
Angwin (7)
Hanby (38)
Finnin (44)
Jericho (32)
Fergus Watts (14)
Krueger (31)
Meesen (8)
Gibson (28)
Pfeifer (17)
Sellar (14) .....and the list goes on

If you study the history, we've had many years where both of 1st and 2nd round picks have been failures .....this can be said of most clubs though

Geelong had one year where they nailed IIRC 6 draft selections ....which set their team up for a decade of success ....study them b4 and recent years, their strike rate isn't that flash either

When did his mental health issues start?

And why were aren’t banging on about those players? Maybe because we are discussing our current list and it’s the McAsey thread.

Crikey Wayne.

Fantasia's appalling draft record has been done to death on here.

Other that our initial draft concessions and the Rendell era, our draft history with early picks is lousy.

Jones is 100% a dud

Not at all. He is under contract.

The reasonable assumption is that the Crows asked too much at the trade table or that his salary was too high for clubs to want to trade.

Once again - my assertion isn't that clubs are clamoring to trade assets to get him, just that If he wants to play AFL in 2024 he will have no shortage of suitors.

I think that it's reasonable to assume what you've said. But given our knowledge of where he was at mentally and how tight we were for list spots, it's also reasonable to assume that we were prepared to give him away and pay most of his contract. I don't agree with your final statement though, there is a very real chance that after 12 months out of the game and having showed nothing the previous 2 years in the SANFL, he'll not find a suitor, no matter how much he wants to keep going. There are always exceptions to rules and Fish could be one becsuse he's fallen further back than any other early picked tall that got the obligatory second chance.

What did Daniel Gorringe show. He has even come out since he quit football saying that he was terrible, he knew he would never make it but he was only given a 2nd chance because he was a top 10 draft pick.

What did Brander show? During his stint with the Weagles he played 33 games in the ressies for 24 goals. Ya see him at AFL Level?

gorringe played a handful of decent games for a young ruckman.
