Wasting pick 6 on McAsey is our worst draft blunder in a decade. But I thought I'd look into exactly how bad it was. I've only gone back 10 years (not including 2022) and I've only included top 10 picks (because it's a bit of a crap shoot after pick 10), but my ranking of the worst 18 selections follows. It is heavily weighted to what clubs missed out on and what they got back, rather than what the initial pick was, so is pretty subjective. I've also included picks clubs got right and then lost the player in a lop-sided trade (which is arguably worse):

I'm bound to have missed some or ranked McAsey above or below others, happy for different opinions.

I know we all assume it’s mental illness, but has anyone ever actually said so?
They mentioned “personal leave”, which often implies mental illness in some form.

I get the feeling some here equate mental illness as being “stressed” or just an excuse. Which it really isn’t the same.

Mental illness is similar to a concussion, where you’re not in control of your brain function and your performances will likely continue to decline from your norm unless rectified. Furthermore, you need to be clinically assessed by a medico/psychologist to confirm a mental illness episode. It shouldn’t be something any player can just simply fake “mental illness”.

The main issue for me is when did it start to occur? Is it in the recent few weeks, or has it been brewing for the past couple of years? Something that isn’t likely to be answered publicly though.

imho Sam De Koning was the player we missed in Fishes posi. Kossie Picket I aways rated and an Adelaide boy was my pick.

Jones is 100% a dud
You can say he hasn’t lived up to expectations of a 1st rounder, but to claim 100% dud? Get real!

He’s already shown he has better potential than DMac, just needs to consolidate all that potential into a solid season. Will likely be a defining season for Jones this year, but dudness isn’t confirmed 100% yet!

Dud
Dmack looked like the next superstar in 2009.
Something jones can only dream of at this point.
In his second year dmack had 3 games under 15 disposals, Chayce has had over 15 about 3 times in his career.
No comparison at all.

Even google doesn't rate Chayce Jones.

DMac had some greats in the midfield to help build on his games early on. Jones is playing while there’s a pandemic and lack of midfield leadership, in a rebuilding team. It’s not fair to compare like that. Anyway, Jones is one player I’m real keen to see his progress this year.

You compared them!!

I used to rave about DMac early on and it had nothing to do with the players around them like you’ve now tried to add as a caveat.

I've restricted the player missed to the next 2 picks only (excluding any pick by the same club), to be more realistic.

But yes, SDK and Kossie would be good picks to have got also. Serong for me above Kossie though.

You said he’s shown more potential than Dmack early on, that is blatantly untrue.

i remain cautiously optimistic that Jones will end up an a grade mid. He's got everything, we just need to negate our special ( Godden) coaching tactics. It's there, I'm near convinced.

He can’t football though (afl standard)

Depends on your definition of dud, I guess.

Is Braeden Campbell a dud?

Yeah and plenty of other clubs missed on De Koning before Geelong nabbed him so it wasn't at all clear cut. And remember even Geelong took midfielder Cooper Stephens 3 picks earlier who was traded to the Hawks on the last day of the 2022 trade week....so even the Cats weren't desperate to get De Koning.

De Koning was Stephen Wells saviour because their other 3 picks are no longer on their list, Stephens traded, Cameron Taheny delisted (Norwood reserves) and Francis Evans delisted before Powa threw him a 1 year lifeline for 2023.

I’m not going on stats alone for dud status. That was purely to compare to Dmack who John brought up.
The right stats are important, they say a lot more about the impact of a player than the "eye test".

For example, DMack's stats say he was a better player in 2021 than Chayce was in 2022.

I just don't think that either player was/ is a "dud".

Imo he’s been gifted games over the past 4 years and I don’t believe he’s best 22 for us (in the worst 2 teams over the last 3 years)
So dud interms of an AFL player is where I place him.

He’s 100% been gifted games, we are desperate for he and McHenry to succeed. We can only afford to admit to so many first round failures

We have a lack of small/ running defenders and he outperforms Parnell, Hammil and McPherson. He's best 22.

There's also players just like him in the best 22 of every team. I think we just overestimate what the bottom end of best 22 looks like.

You could argue half the side have been gifted games over the past 3 years... but this is not surprising given we have been in rebuild mode.

Imo, Jones will prove you wrong & be a handy AFL footballer.

McHenry I'm not convinced about though.
