Freo fans: tonight hurts but at least be courteous to each other while venting.

I think the club needs to realise that our timeline for actually contending begins next year. Even if we make finals this year.

And for us to be serious contenders next year we need development into the likes of Simpson, Delean, Stanley, Sturt, Knobel, Erasmus.

And we need to begin to imbed an alternative game plan.

Agreed. We need an answer on Ras and Johnson. Their best positions, rotation and give them some selection confidence. If we plan on playing the 3 J's, we should bring in Knobel. Get some development into him.

JOM shouldn't play unless all inside bulls are out. Let us see what Stanley can do on a wing or flank.

This year is a journey year. There should be a lot of enjoyable wins, but it isn't our year to contend. We need to see other types in the team.

The same can be applies to Walters. He has declined further this year. With the added issues of further loss of pace and now losing his feet in contests. If we are going to carry older guys we should carry younger one's. Love Sonny. Also don't want to remember him like this. Maybe rest him and play him at home in certain match ups. Let him travel with the team etc.

Banners is a study in frustration. Should have had 3-4 goals last night. The difference between his best and worst games this year are what you would expect from a first or second year player.

We’ve played enough good footy and the midfield good enough for last night to be a scheduled off night for the backline and midfield. I’m not ignoring the first 5 weeks of footy because we put in one stinker. The midfield beat two top 4 midfields the last two games - away.

But the gigantic glaring problem is that we can’t make finals while the forward line is this bad. Switta needs to be our 6th/7th best forward, not 3rd/4th

Our midfield is beige. So beige.

I was shocked at his kicking depth. I thought he was a powerful kick

And to somewhat repeat the other person, why would you think that? He has never presented with a powerful kick. Remember against North on half time and he had a running shot from on the 50 and it was touched on the line? Brayshaw and Switta can't kick the ball very far either. Freddy is our only powerful kick from the small brigade in the best 22.

Sensible post.

On the forward line, what is the solution?

Yes, we could put it down to having a bad night and Methcoast playing out of there skins but the biggest concern for me in the last 3 weeks is the lack leadership on the ground when it really mattered. It can’t just be Pearce. Brayshaw, Serong, Aish, Fyfe, JOM, Walters, Ryan need to step up and they haven’t as a whole group.
I have never been more embarrassed to be Dockers supporter than right now.

It was a shocking loss but I am not sure why so many people are saying season over
Didn't the sensible amongst us have us 3-3 after six rounds, losing to Brisbane, Port and Carlton?
The litmus test is more this week and how we respond to this debacle in our first home game in a month. After that we have two winnable away games sandwiching a tough one against Sydney at home. Not season over just yet. We'll know much more in a month

We could win twenty games straight from now on and I would still feel sour over this derby loss.

Just to check my maths, 17 remaining games, 20 wins, qualifying final win, preliminary final win, grand final win.

Still bitter about this result

Nah - we win the GF this year and we will all be partying so hard this game will be forgotten.

As we won’t win this year… it will remain a bitter taste. I felt that way about the North loss last season.

Yeah but I can name plenty of flags won with a midfield like this, improved transition and actual forwards and it looks better. Warner would be nice though

I’m not sure they’re capable of improved transition.

Every change we make must be for improved ball movement.

Wagner, Chapman, Worner, Stanley, Simpson…the bar is very low for these guys.

Get 12 possessions like Hughes or O’Meara or Aish but kick better and be positive with the ball and we’re miles in front.

Snuff, i agree with a lot of what you write generally, but I dont agree with this :(
I think a forward line of: Amiss, Freddy, Treacy, Walters, Switta, Emmett and Jackson (and Darcy floating down), has the capacity and skill to kick a lot of goals. I think the main issue lies with the midfield that just cant kick it in there with purpose. We look a lot better when skilled kickers like Young and Clark are creating the entries.

I feel like I've woken up in a fresh version on hell.
Is it a coincidence that Darcy comes in, Jackson goes forward and this results?
It was like everything that was good about the team in the first 5 weeks just dissolved.
I feel like we have to throw positions out the window and play people where they can play.
Jackson is midfielder, put him on a wing if we have to but he's utterly wasted camped in the forward line, he plays best around the ball.

Our midfield is beige. So beige.

Agree to some extent. I think it is made worse with JOM and Walters out there. And compounded when we get bad banners.

JOM is so as treacle and Walters can no longer play his position. He can’t get separation on a lead and is losing his feet in contests.

Add two players with pace who can get out and the midfield looks better because they have options.

We need to see what Stanley, Simpson and Delean can bring.

I LOVED Stanley yesterday at Peel. The guy just kicks the ball flat and makes good attacking decisions.

Is West Coast one of the most bizarre cases in AFL history? They’ve had a decent team on paper for the last 3 years, even despite injuries, but played like the worst team of all time so everyone assumed they’re all cooked and absolutely stink.
3 weeks ago they played the Bulldogs and Adam Simpson, an AFL premiership coach pre match says they’d just like to win a quarter (they didn’t).

Fast forward 3 weeks and you go okay, makes sense that they can win games with names like Yeo and Kelly out of the middle, McGovern and Barrass mopping up, and Waterman and Cripps up front, ******* Darling has kicked 500 goals too.

And now due to inexplicably sucking so bad WAFL teams could’ve smashed them, they’ve stocked up on generational talent too.
If you have watched them over the last few weeks, you can see their belief grow.

Older guys who thought they were just grind out the last part of their career in a wooden spoon side have realised "hang on there is a chance for a win or two here"

They have also, finally, been ruthless at selection by dropping guys like Gaff.

And then they haven't fumbled their handling of their one elite young player. He is given a meaningful role and allowed to play.

The transition is an interesting one. This year the game so far has turned more towards teams who control the opposition's transition as well as their own. The chaotic but rapid transition seems to have been, for now, quelled.

I think teams who can change gears, like Geelong, have a big advantage. But they're ultra-experienced.

More than one thing at a time has to be wrong to put in such a poor perfromance. And lets not forget that wc played well.

Our performance was a combo of poor strategy, not turning up and being exposed in individual contests. There is a lot to do to recover from that.

In regards to not turning up, I think spending a full week away (as wedid for 2 games in SA) often works out badly for a travelling team.

Your listing two under 21 year old KPFs, Emmett who is currently a budget Schultz, a fwd/ruck and a bloke more well done then a steak cooked at a park bbq. It’s not good enough and 3 of the 4 that have any forward craft didn’t play last night

Beige.

Young is the only creative one of the mids. Penetrating kick, makes good decisions.
I want to see him kick more goals
Seems just an arbitrary call.

I call them not beige. There's a fair variety in what each of them brings. If Jackson's not creative I don't know who is.

By beige do you mean mediocre?

Last 4 games we've kicked totals in the 60s - just not good enough. It doesn't look as bad because we took Carlton and Port to the brink and Adelaide only managed 34 points, but we are going nowhere with those types of scores.

First week looked incredible against Brisbane nearly kicked a tonne - but that's cos our talls combined for 9 goals, a few from our smalls and midfielders - same for the next week against Norf.

Understandably Amiss is only in his second season proper and Treacy is a work in progress - our smalls really aren't reliable except to bob up for the odd goal.

I'm not worried long term about the midfield/defence except that we lack mongrel as others have pointed out - we need some malice in the middle and in not sure where it's going to come from.

Season has still started semi-positively but we need big changes personnel wise to get the right player set for a flag tilt.
