I know he's likely to keep his spot on the side based on no reason other than Cameron being unavailable, but surely the heat should be on Ratugolea after his performance today...

And what makes the following even more frustrating is that he had such a promising opening 15 minutes, and then you'd be forgiven for thinking he was the one subbed out of the game

View attachment 1348609

That's the lowest possession tally of all players to take to the field - yes, Cameron had 5 disposals before being subbed off

His 4 disposals all came in the first half with 3 in the first quarter. His second half stats are 2 tackles in the third quarter & 2 hitouts in the last (to go with 3 in the first quarter for a total of 5); Blicavs also finished with 5 hitouts playing as a permanent defender, while Hawkins had 4

And yes, his solo mark was a very good mark, but damn he's surely not doing enough to warrant continued selection
Spot on.... especially when Cameron went down, it was his turn to step up..
We can't keep saying his young, his raw, it's his 6ty f#$kin season and there is no excuses... if Sav going to be like that lets give Neale games even gift it to him like we have given games to Sav...

I agree on all that it was noticeable we moved it quicker when it works our forward line has so much artillery we will squash teams (great for %) but when we turned it over we were more exposed as we pressed up higher and didnt haw our usual 1 or 2 intercept markers back. Better sides will score heavily against us on turnover that way so we need to get the balance right.

I honestly wonder if dahl had OP last year as his workrate and 1 % were great but he couldnt kick over a jam tin. Today he had speed like 4 years ago. Or maybe getting dropped lit a fire in him. Equally higgins was very good.

Agree with all that my only main gaps are key defender if dek is out long term and 2nd ruck-i doubt we use blitz there and sav doesnt look up to it..im not sure ceglar and stanley in the same team works but we need to try it. As good as cameron is we have enough fwd firepower to cover him in the regular season (need him in finals though) im more concerned about our rucks and midfield.

I would wear a few more goals against us...if we score more... and mostly I feel once we get used to taking it on , and we are calmer with hands and more secure by foot..we will turn it over less. I did not even mind them taking a breather at times..and passing it from side to side on the backline..just not all the time.

Our issue will be when we cant control the centre bounce. I fear its a vulnerbility that we will not be able to diminish till we have a better ruck. Can that be Ceglar?

All the matures had fresh bodies today.. we will see how we play by w4 -w6 when others have looked at us and we are not as fresh.

Cameron kicked 3 goals against Essendon last year before going off midway through the 2nd quarter, and kicked another couple in less than a quarter against them today before going off injured.

Wonder how many he'd bag against the Bombers if he played a full game against them...

He kicked 6 against them back in 2013

Otherwise there's been a few matches of 4 goals

He does seem to have a good record against Collingwood though - multiple games of 6 goals

Many highlights but our record breaking Captain Selwood is just an out and out never say die legend.
Never stops, even in the last five mins he was breaking his guts.
Well done Catters.
I want him to play that well this year that he goes again next year…he is that good. I’m not ready for a Geelong team with no Joel Selwood just yet 😍

I thought Sav started the game really well he looked to be jumping better than he has since he was injured.
He copped a big hit (punch) from Draper. Went off for a long time and couldn’t get near it after that.

I know a lot of fans patience is running thin for Sav. But i think his effort today was very hampered and stayed out there because of the other injuries.

There has been a very strong case that he should be dropped long before today's game (which was a further reinforcement of this). He just doesn't contribute nearly enough to earn his place in the side and its been that way for quite a while now...

We know that but the reality is we need someone to play chop out minutes as the 2nd ruck and we dont have many options there.

Just some quick thoughts.

We looked amazing. Parfitt, wow. Hopefully this is what he looks like for years to come as he could honestly be our first choice mod at this rate

Stengle was great. He’s that small forward we’ve been ever so eager for.

A lot of vets looked great. Selwood, Danger, Hawkins, etc

Great start to the season.

The Cats came out firing like they had a reputation to restore.
The whipping boys played like they had a point to prove
The coach shed the Tempo game plan like a contract to come
The fans watched like they had memories to mend

What a difference motivation makes
p.s. Dear Chris Scott sometimes a kick in the pants is worth a thousand words.

Scott had an absolute day out, even Jack Henry played so awful you could almost justify him being left out in round 1 last year.

The incident with Drapper may not have made things easy for Ratugolea, but not sure it can really be used to excuse the performance - he was struggling to get near the ball before the incident also

He had 3 disposals in the first quarter, 1 in the second and no registered disposals after half time - that reads like most of his games where he gets his disposals in a chunk & is then missing outside of that promising burst

The clash with Drapper occurred in the 3rd quarter, about 5 or so minutes into it and he was on the bench for around 10 minutes - my seat is near there, so good viewing for what's happening. He looked in a lot of discomfort at the time, like he had been severely winded and was struggling to get his breath. Before he came back on though, he was showing no noticeable lingering effects & looked fine to continue

Watching the game again. Don't know which pass was better - Selwood's handball to set up Dahl's goal in the first term, or Tomahawk's pass to set up Close for a goal in the second.

Apparently he's good trade bait. Or so I hear?

I also wouldn't underestimate how much of his role is to just compete in the air, the longer quicker ball movement meant plenty of kicks where our own forwards weren't even in position and Sav found himself just flying against 2 or 3 purely to contest the ball.
If nothing else he has the frame and willingness for the contact to do that.

With all fit players in he isn't probably best 22... But when they need him there is more too things than stats

I think getting helicoptered into round 1 with questionable fitness did him no favours

I say this again, he needs to learn in the 2s.

He won't though with jez in the emergency room

And it needs to be either as a ruck or as a forward because he's not really doing enough in either role and it's not fair on him either - if he is seen as a long term forward option, play him out of the square as the #1 forward in our VFL side and see what he has to offer
