No, not done yet; that's in a fortnight's time. I think we stand a good chance against WCE on neutral territory, but COLL's game style seems to create trouble. Whatever the case, I doubt we have the team to beat RICH. It seems they are still ahead of all comers.

I don't believe Geelong has now or has had for seven years, a team that is markedly ahead of the competition. Our recent finals record reflects this.

Looking at the many different games styles of premiership teams over the last 20 years, I don't personally believe there is a specific brand that stands up in finals.

I'd also say a coach's game plan is as good as the players at his or her disposal, and that the coach's influence, while significant, is a bit overrated in our game.

On gerbil-faced optimists vs keyboard-expert pessimists...

Barracking for a football team is foolish. We don't know, coach, or play for the team. sh*t, the majority of supporters and pundits have barely kicked a football in anger. We are entirely passive—there is nothing the supporter can do to control the outcome. But we invest real emotion all the same, depending on our team's results — joy, frustration, sadness and so on. 'The tides of life will be the tides of the home-team's fortunes' to quote Bruce Dawe. As I said, this is nuts (and I am speaking from experience). It seems to me that the Gerbil-faced optimists, when faced with an unwanted result (a loss), are just a bit more capable than the keyboard-expert pessimists at recognising their folly.

Maybe.

Good post. :)

I thought Henry was Bambi. All arms and legs.
Henry is your low skill, zero awareness, crash and bash type player. He plays his role. in the home and away but is no good under finals pressure. Kolodjashnij has a bit more finesse but he is no good under finals pressure. I never thought I would say it but they made Bews look composed. Sad for Bews playing his 100th game. I don't think that was mentioned all night.

Thank god I turned it off midway through the 3rd.
The most disappointing thing about this game was Hawkins. Cost us so so dearly last year and completely chokes tonight.
0.5 and 1 out on the full. He needs to be absolutely blasted for that. 1 of our most if not important player and he completely goes to water because of BOOOOOOOOO.
I really thought we had had enough of losing finals year in and year out. But guess what? We just keep doing it time and time again. Against a pretty sh*t team tonight to be honest. At least we know Port are no where near flag material.
3 certain things in life -
1. Death
2. Taxes
3. Geelong losing finals.

fu** this I’m over it.
Cheers

Turning off in the third quarter shows the level of fan you are. Eagles? Sydney Port before 2007?

Kick straight and we win? Maybe not. Half of those misses were Hawkins on the boundary line or flukey snaps out of congestion. Our forward half game needs work. Its a recurring theme in finals. We don’t score enough. Slow ball moving game plan that congests our forward line where the only option we can find is Hawkins on the boundary. Not good enough. Must be holiday season on Hawkins island as it’s jam packed!

I was talking more about the gettable set shots for goal.

As simple as it sounds, had stanley kicked his set shot in the first quarter, Hawkins kick his two set shots from the right pocket (45 degree angle) he would normally eats those for breakfast, we win.

Trying to look for some positives in what was a dissapointing night.

I agree, we need to work on our forward game and work on getting cleaner entries going forward

Given that we have got very little help from the draft over the last 10 years, we have done very well to regularly make the finals. I'm beginning to think we have over-achieved. We are in a position right now where we have 3 first round picks. We should use them to recruit good young players to add to the quite promising crop of young talent we have. We need to break this cycle of trading our picks for discards from other clubs. You only have to look at some of the players we have picked up in the draft to understand how important it is - Selwood, Duncan, Ablett (even if he was father son), Guthrie, Hawkins (FS as well). I'm not saying we haven't picked up some pretty good players by trading but it is important to have a good mix.

Moments after Stanley missed that shot, so too did Ebert for Port Adelaide.
And when Hawkins missed his set shot from the boundary line, we locked the ball inside our forward half which presented Hawkins with another shot from similar angle.
Had Hawkins kicked the goal from the first attempt, there would be no forward half pressure resulting in Hawkins having another shot to begin with. The ball would have gone back to the center of the ground and Port Adelaide likely win the clearance (as they did all night).

And why do we have a game plan that relies on having one extra in the backline?

If other teams allow it, we would be better served having one extra at the contest.

We lose the clearance and we just invite the pressure to our backs.

The one extra down back only works well when we play on quickly from the back half. That's why I think Clarke should come back in. He's not afraid to take them on.

It's a fine balance, chances all Clubs have to take, especially since COLA, Academy, Free Agency etc.
We've had some winners and some that eventually turned out not so great.
We do have what looks like a fair crop, and good picks- but the next draft doesn't look so good.
Plus I think according to Cookie there will only be 38 list places due to COVID financials.

You have no idea what kind of supporter I am. I’ve been a member for 19 years. If I wish to turn it off because my team are choking once again in a final, what business is it of yours? Unless you enjoy watching them lose finals over and over.

I feel that the likes of Ratugolea & Clark really could have benefited from the competitiveness of the VFL this year and only having the scratch matches for those not playing seniors, has hurt those guys on the fringe...

This. SO MUCH this. I realise that other teams were in the same boat too, but not having a genuine reserves comp plus all the other peculiarities of an extented hub life and quarantine bubble would have been strange for the fringe players to adapt to. How do they prove they're ready for selection? How do they keep match-hardened on the sidelines?

2021 might see some strange 'de-transitioning' in the early rounds too. Maybe. Expect the unexpected?

I get the feeling the optimistic want to pin it on Hawkins goal kicking and the first half misses. But let's be real here, the intensity went up in the 3rd and the old jitters came back. Very much like West Coast game early this year and Collingwood last finals series.

Geelong don't have another gear. Taylor is shot, Henry just screams panic, menengola could be the biggest front runner I've seen and Miers doesn't sniff a ball In a contested game. The ball movement is slow, the game is structured, it's never gonna win finals. I'm just numb to it, no emotion. The writing was on the wall after the tigers game.

Our old players are shit they are too immobile and lethargic. The young players haven't stood up enough. The gameplan is also shit the players are always afraid to attack. It's on Scott for persisting with spuds like Kolo and Stanley that should've been delisted years ago. Yet morons are critical about Miers/Menegola who have shown more in one season than Kolo/Stanley ever will

We were cooked by rd15. I'd delist a lot of the older players they have no hunger and can't last a 22 rd season

Hendo was great.
Taylor did his job on a good match-up for him.
Rucks were ok
Selwood back in amongst it
Atkins justified his selection

Kolo and Henry terrible
Hawk - mentally weak - play-on snap ridiculous.
Duncan - Why can’t he have a big final!
Small forwards offered nothing, including Gaz
Rohan did his usual disappearing trick
O’Connor - Was he dragged away from contest?
Stewart - is he our next captain? Needed to show it!

The rest were forgettable or the night

Taylor was ordinary. Motlop ran rings around him.

atkins justified nothing. Played as a mid and was terrible.

Scott doesnt take criticism in denial

Too old
No leg speed
Slow ball movement
No plan b
Henry & kolo crumble no awareness and poor kicks
Small forwards dont kick enough goals
No 2nd tall marking target

Since the start of 2019, our best football has been played with Selwood not in the midfield. This is not a criticism of a champion player, but for whatever reason the other midfielders seem diminished when he is there.

Selwood should be played forward. Guthrie is our cleanest and quickest midfielder and seemed to be out of action.

Touhy could be moved back for Kolo, a better match for the smalls, and bring in Steven onto a wing, but I don’t think we will see any changes.

We have had no draft picks cos we spent them on ready made players to win a flag.

Only chance is to bring in
Jordan clarke
Narkle
Not sure who else but plenty of omissions
Rohan/dalhaus/arkins/henry
