Bloody excited

Gather Round tickets were much easier to acquire in the public sale than I figured they would.

Grabbed a 4-day pass.

Do any of our South Aussies know how long the trip from Norwood to AO is? Is it possible to attend the Freo Vs Suns game and then the Richmond Vs Sydney game?

Not from Adelaide but been a lot for cricket. Norwood is only 6-7ks away

Thanks Blues crew. Got more offers than tickets needed.
Can’t wait
Adelaide oval is a fantastic place to watch sport
Invested in our game and I’ll enjoy the rest
Sitting on the hill in front of the scoreboard is one of my endearing sporting memories

Norwood Oval is only a few kms out of the city.

I'm not particularly surprised by this. I don't think it will be as popular as the AFL seem to think it might.

Think that you might be surprised.

I have no difficulty having an opposing side to J on issues. However, the football people in my family understood my anxiety about getting tickets but thought it was a bit silly to be.

I can see their point:

Adelaide Vs Carlton

The Crows will draw their crowd regardless of their opponent. However, if the AFL was convinced that it was going to sell out then they would have avoided using this matchup and saved it for another round. Instead, they chose the Victorian club that they know has a proud history of South Australian football and as a result a huge local supporter base.

Port Adelaide

Another sign that the AFL is reserved on attendance is that they didn't trust the Power to sell out the other standalone slot (Friday night). Nor did they position them for the "grand finale" to the whole shebang. What they did do was pair them in the second half of the Saturday double-header with another huge Melbourne club with significant SA history (Essendon) and a recent premier (Melbourne).

This presents as a fantastic opportunity for people like me who have family involved at multiple clubs (including non-Victorian clubs) to have everyone in the same city at the same time and for those who have family and friends in Adelaide to visit. However, there's arguably little reason other than the hype of the event itself (and those who would road trip interstate anyway) for too many Melbournians to travel to the event. Family asked "How many games did you attend when you were living in Melbourne every week? You'd attend your Carlton game and maybe another if you attended with a friend, supporting their club, if you were lucky. There's half a dozen games on in Melbourne most weeks. This is just a slightly bigger version of the Melbourne norm."

The other argument that they had for me was that you can't go a day anymore without seeing in the news how screwed the economy is. We're just coming out of Covid-19 (if we truly are) and people are facing huge levels of inflation, interest rate hikes, and the like. Housing costs (mortgage and renting) are through the roof. For the vast majority, the money just isn't there to justify a lavish holiday to something that they can normally do the next week. This is reflected in how the Gather Round tickets are priced. I'll readily admit, for example, that I just paid less money for 4-days of AFL games than what I did for the equivalent seating for the Gold Coast Vs Carlton game earlier this year (was $126 for 4-day pass with me on DSP, my partner on low-income carer payment and our kid getting in for free). If my health situation wasn't so perilous I couldn't justify it.

I know we aren’t meant to praise Collingwood players. But Pendlebury has been a magnificent player. Captain for nine years in this day and age is a wonderful achievement. I must admit I do get occasional “what if” thoughts on what would have happened if we drafted him. But in fairness to our recruiters, he was definitely considered a bolter to even go at number five in what was considered a weak draft at the time.

When discussing the popularity/success of ticket sales, we are a bit in the dark as to how the tickets have been allocated.

I, like you (and probably others who were committed to going), was worried about getting the necessary tickets. I comfortably (and cheaply) got the 8 x 4 day passes that I wanted. That was with impediments like no codes initially, internet stuffed due to thunderstorm overnight knocking out the NBN, and being timed out of the Ticketek system and sent back to the start of the queue.

As far as I know, the only game sold out is the one at Mt. Barker. Our game has tickets still available on the upper level. But to suggest they "needed" us as a big club with a proud SA history to help fill the ground is a bit of a stretch. The Crows allocation would almost certainly be gone. If the idea was to make this as neutral as possible, then they want a club who can go close to filling the other half of the ground. They chose us on that basis, and likely allocated the availability of tickets accordingly i.e. it is our tickets that are still available, but we were given every opportunity to grab them. The Port game would be the same, giving Dogs, Dons and Dees fans every chance by restricting the Port allocation. The AFL likely didn't give Port the other marquee game, as they didn't want to be seen to be blatantly favoring the SA teams.

I agree with your points re the economy etc. This was also thrown together so quickly, with one weekend (between fixture announcement and ticket sales) to organise all the logistics. Hardly conducive to achieving maximum sales on day one. Pre-Christmas is a bad time for a lot of people to commit to something 4 months away.

Your point that "there's arguably little reason other than the hype of the event itself (and those who would road trip interstate anyway) for too many Melbournians to travel to the event" is missing one element. Fans of different teams can travel, stay and watch games together. This doesn't normally happen. I am only going because of the Richmond, Geelong and Hawthorn people that are part of my group. I know I'm not living in Melbourne, but they are.

All in all, it seems to have worked well. Those of us that wanted tickets urgently, got them. The SA fans of all teams would have got tickets if they wanted them (except maybe North and Brisbane?). There are still tickets left for others to make plans for.

One problem I can see affecting crowds, is the 4 day passes. We decided they were the best way for us to see Carlton, Richmond and Geelong, given it was one code per person. We don't have any interest in the Saturday games and will likely do something different that day. That's 8 seats missing, and we won't be the only ones in that situation.

we'd have undeveloped him into the best vfl player you'd ever seen...

Good post.

Although the fixture was only announced this past weekend this isn't quite true. The official announcement for the round was made back in the first half of November. I booked my accommodation on November 12 after it was announced as being the week following Easter knowing that the school holidays would be the same period (e: fixed).

As I'm the only actual member in my family group (that'll change this year) I only had one code so had to wait for the gen public sale. I had anticipated the 4-day pass being long gone in the member sale. I would have been happy with a Carlton game only ticket and figured the rest out there.

I don't know if they held back a certain number of passes for the public or if AFL club members didn't sell out but I was a tad surprised that it was so readily available.

I can tell you that you wont be alone in avoiding some of the games on the 4-day pass. First time my partner will be visiting Adelaide and as much as she supports my Carlton/AFL support the last thing she'll want is to attend nothing but football.

I would have hoped that we would have coached all of that "basketballishness" out of his game.
and we'd have fixed the ridiculous way he made other players look like they were standing still - that would definitely have been excised.........

Great news folks, Kennett's been booted out as Hawthorn President !

Yeah but no. Wasn't standing for re-election but had anointed his successor. His anointed successor was beaten in the election by Andy Gowers.

To really rub it in for Jeff, James Merlino (former ALP deputy premier) was voted onto the board. What with Daniel Andrews getting back in and the members pretty much repudiating everything that Jeff wanted it's been pretty much Jeff's worst nightmare.

THE AFL has dumped the umpire at the centre of the Brownlow Medal betting scandal, but has ruled out changes to the voting process for the prestigious award.
Former field umpire Michael Pell was one of four men arrested last month over suspicious betting activity, having allegedly leaked votes on specific matches this year.

The AFL informed umpires this week that Pell has been removed from the umpiring panel, with a replacement to be appointed over summer.

you're equating this idiots efforts with collusion to affect the outcome of a game?

Umpires are human beans nothing less nothing more - collusion isn't required if it is just one person's bias.

Best Collingwood player I've seen in my life.

yep - mistakes don't equal cheating - mind you, the moment there's a skerrick of proof that umpires have fixed a game, me walkies..........

ANy rational person would...me? I'm out when we get to #17 - before anyone other Club does and after gloating for a year on here ..

GO BLUES
