Part of the Tiger’s success has been undeniably good recruitment decisions - some consistent themes are:
- nearly all the recruits have very good (and in a number of cases elite) foot skills. Their passing style are the low stabs, with little hang time which helps move the ball on at speed. Very few of the Cats have this skill.
- nearly all smalls/mids are very quick off first 10 metres, very good agility and quick thinkers meaning they can swarm and spread brilliantly fast
- size is not a priority with mids - There are few big bodies in this group (Caddy an exception) - the tackling power comes from swarming, tenacity and quick thinking rather than strength
- many of the mids have been picked up early twenties (and without chronic injuries) from expansion teams (ie Another club put up with the development ‘pain’ and the Tigers have been able to polish and slot in). Prestia, Houli, Edwards, are great examples.
- List has been supplemented with some extremely good mature aged rookies, including Lambert and now Pickett.

Contrast to our recruiting pre 2018 is huge -
- foot skills have been secondary behind other facets.
- likewise we’ve been prepared to recruit mid paced or even slowish mids where they are good ball winners at TAC.
- we’ve often recruited players with chronic injuries as juniors (or older) often using our high draft picks, meaning they take a while to recover (if ever!) and slot in. This has often been driven by trying to fill specific problems in our ‘premiership window’.

Last year's draft for us was much better but I think we could benefit from copying the Tigers’ recruiting strategies.

Agree and they have won more than their fair share of trades
2016 prestia for pick 6 was a win
2016 lids for caddy massive win
2016 banker is for pick 46 win
2016 vivkery for second rounder, massive win
2018 conca for lynch massive win
2018 Lloyd for pick 64 was a loss
2019 Pickett and stack for free massive wins

we need to consider our wise selections thurlow, Lang, smedts, cockatoo, henderson
Stupid trades for Varcoe and caddy

Absolutely. Right there whilst we were giving away first round picks for Hendo and 2e they were getting links in the allowed them to pull it all together.

But they’ve also had years with top level picks.

Yeah, but he do was not a pressing need, nor a first round pick
Struggling to play decent games at the blues who were shite

A couple of mature aged state league players l like.
Mitch Hibberd from Williamstown FC. Big mid with a very strong aĺl round game. AFLready.

Ben Sokol Subiaco, WA, classy medium half forward 6 goals in the WAFL GF win and winner of the Simpson Medal best afield.
Would go pretty early on this guy. Ready made.

This isn’t 100% accurate. Houli was recruited prior to this game plan. Caddy was opportunistic. Prestia is not quicker than any other mid in any other team off the first 10 meters.

I’d say it’s more about coaching and training a game style. It looks supernatural, but it’s just tactics based on percentages.

Bang it forward at all costs, whether handball or tap, even when tackled. The rest of the surrounding teammates also move forward.

The forwards run towards goal and then turn around and run at the ball carrier. They take the mark that’s speared at them or it goes past them for a small to run onto.

Sometimes it will be intercepted by the opposition and they will look to capitalise on this turnover. But if the Tigers mids are charging forwards at them, then they have less time to pick a target and they just bang it forward.

Meanwhile the Richmond backs move forward as well so that when the ball is kicked forward by the opposition, it’s cut off. Pretty simple. It just requires commitment.

The way to beat it is to win the contest and knock it back past the swarm of Richmond players and take possession leaving them behind the ball. You often see Stewart run at the ball when it’s being swarmed with chaos ball so that he can tap it back through their line of attack. Even Bews was trying to do this. Just attack the ball and bodyline it.

Adding to this, by using the boundary with clean and sharp kicks, you can isolate their players contest by contest or create a stoppage which your contest winning players can win cleanly and burst away from. If it’s turned over near the boundary, your backs and mids are in a better position to defend the swarm.

Kick-mark play is also effective. Just play that Hawthorn style game from 2013-2015.

You need contest winners and great ball users to take territory, as well as set up a wall of defence.

That’s why missing Duncan and Hawkins killed us in that game.

So are we after Jezza Cameron?

Surely we have cap space with a few retirements and guys like Scooter moving on.

Well from what you hear we are losing Kelly Smith Henderson Selwood Taylor who would all be on reasonable money or planned money and we are only interested in Steven at the moment so either we have massive salary cap issues or we are making a play for someone

Oh ok. Where did I get that idea from. Well so we were smashed with our best set up? Great.

Narkle fell over on the first one and wasn’t able to stop Prestia get the clearance and get it to Lynch.

Pretty sure Selwood missed a tackle or it bounced around for the second goal to happen too.

6/6/6 and the centre clearances killed us. We expected to do the same to them, but just didn’t. Guthrie wasn’t in the centre I believe - which makes me think he got injured? He was great in the first half of getting the ball forward with his clever little taps.

And their ruckman. In 2017 they adapted to having an average ruckman and part timer. This year... Soldo. How sad is that? They had a project rookie with no background come good and start playing like McAvoy in game 12.

Narkle fell over for the 2nd goal - easy clearance to Prestia after that

The first goal we got the clearance and Joel handballed to Stanley who was tackled, umpire paid holding the ball and the ball had spilled out in the tackle (think Stanley tried to dispose of the ball but didn't do so cleanly). The Tigers picked up the loose ball and got a long, quick kick forward to Lynch

Yeah, I think Sokol would be a very wise choice if we don't for example go for Taheny.
I'd be happy with one of Sokol or Taheny. Depends if they want to use an early pick (Taheny) or punt later (Sokol).
Might make sense to get a premium kid early, then Sokol with a late pick.

Having said, I think mature picks might get picked earlier this draft...

He must have been asked it a bit ...

Werribee

For the record, Riccardi’s dad’s name is Tony, not former Geelong wingman Peter Riccardi. “It’d be good to put that one to bed right here, right now, that I’m not Peter Riccardi’s son and I’d like to apologise to him for all the times that I’ve been mentioned as his son” he said with a laugh.

“My dad’s name is Tony and he’ll be happy that he’s known as my dad instead of Peter.”

Yep ...
- Lang, Nakia and (lesser extent) Hendo had a history of chronic injury.
- None are elite ball users (although Hendo and Thurlow not bad)
- Nakia is super quick but all rest are either average pace or slow and not agile

That wasn't just lids for caddy, have a look at how the draft points calculator rates that positional trade considering lids had 32 games left in him and the bullshark had played key roles in two premiership for Richmond

Seriously, you have lost as soon as you bring out that stupid calculator
Pick 3 is not worth 5 picks in the 40s

Then in the Grand Final, Soldo takes it out of the ruck, takes 4 steps, gets tackled and just drops it..... Play on.

Problem for us with Riccardi, Sokol and Hibbard is alot of clubs will be into the trio and they may go lot earlier then we expect, all depends on which club management team thinks that picks for young talent end and where more value in mature age recruits start....
