Caldwell leaving means they have more cash to ‘match’. But they are not matching to keep Cameron, they already wouldn’t reach the $ we offered so it’s complete bullsh*t.

That is why we are annoyed and standing our ground. They are not matching to keep, they refused to cough up the $. Especially after he should be a UFA at his age and has given 9 years of service.

But I see them threading a match so here’s what I think:

Gws want players and are interested in McDonald.

Geelong
Give up 11, 33, narkle
Get Cameron, 46

Melbourne
Get 33
Give up McDonald

Gws
Lose Cameron , 46 (they won’t use anyway)
Get 11, McDonald

Overall gws get a slight upgrade on pick 10 by getting a player they want in addition. Melb swap 33 for brown. Geelong give up essentially the exact same as what we did for danger and give 46 for Higgins.

We probably get 60 from Brisbane for Nakia. So are left with:

13, 18 and 60 for the draft. Receive Cameron and Higgins. Lose narkle and Nakia.

Just posted this on the GWS trade board, let me know what you guys think:

*******************************

Interesting scenario it creates if someone like Tom McDonald might want to go to you guys on very high wages, and someone like Higgins wants to come to us, on high wages.

There could be a way here where essentially everyone wins.

Here's my proposal:

Higgins on 600K
McDonald on supposedly 700-800K
Cameron being offered 750-850K

4 clubs in North, Cats, Giants and Melbourne get involved and help out each other with various benefits being incurred.

Net end result is -

North: give up Higgins & 1 MIL-1.1 MIL - 700/800K K for McDonald and 300K for Higgins - & receive our First Rounder - Pick 11 or 13 (they have so much cap that they might not even be able to meet the minimum - especially with Brown going)

Melbourne: Salary dump of McDonald, paying none of his contract, for our pick 33

Geelong: Give up pick 11 or 13, Pick 33, receive Cameron and Higgins

Giants: Give up Cameron, receive McDonald for nothing, and gain Pick 9 - effectively gaining a high pick, a replacement key swingman and 750K of cap space

*********************

Raw Trade Outline:

Geelong:

OUT: Pick 11 or 13, 33
IN: Cameron, Higgins

North

OUT: Higgins, 1 MIL-1.1 MIL
IN: Geelong Pick 11 or 13

Melbourne

OUT: McDonald and 700K+
IN: 700K freed up in salary cap, Geelong Pick 33

Giants

OUT: Cameron
IN: McDonald (salary paid) Pick 9 compo

***********

Satisfies a need for everyone, whilst Giants get a replacement player for no salary and utilizes the compo pick effectively

Pretty sure most non geelong will look at trade scnario submitted by a geelong poster and say ... looks a good deal for you. If we trade out an R1 and R2 and get Cameron and Higgins... id say most would be think we are doing pretty well in that deal

I think it depends on what other moves we make but i think we will want compo and a side trade with them that makes the most sense to me. Whether our fallback option is then a trade or to make the offer so so high that they cantmatch i dont know.

But i think we will be working on bringing in other players too not just crouch and higgins.
His agent would of told us what there offer was and how much room they have. Obviously this would of changed alot as 5 players have now requested to leave GWS.
You can scratch Crouch off that list his nominated St Kilda.
If you believe reports Higgins is pretty much done. The only immediate need we really have is a Key Defender with Taylor most likely retiring.

Caldwelll leaving does us absolutely no favours. They will have plenty of cap room now. WTF is wrong with the Giants.

They had a better hand in the super 2018 draft than Geelong have this year and they are probably going to blow the lot and lose all three of their 1st Round picks within 2 yrs

Imagine if that happened at a VIC club

Why should someone stay if they get a good offer somewhere else..he never chose to play for them in the first place. FA players have given plenty of service ..and if they have multiples all falling available at the same time ..is that bad luck or poor management.

In the end ..kids might sign up to play afl..but when they have a choice they will choose what they have dreamed about. How many Vic kids jump into bed with a footy and dream of playing for the giants ? Fair chance a Metro kid will get targeted ..there are several Metro sides that will go hard at them. 500 pa for Caldwell is pretty hard imo.
It gets back to the academy type arguments.

Hately + Caldwell already leaving, XoH maybe to follow - that's their entire draft of two years ago out the door.

Probably not fair to blame the kids who just don't want to be there, it's really just a franchise created for TV rights and nothing more, at least from an outside perspective.

It doesn't help that they are a revolving door of first round picks so players getting games now may not be in 2 years due to better recruits.

I mean how many first round picks have they had in the last 10 years if you exclude the start up drafts they have probably averaged around 2-3 firsts every year with a heap of them being top 10 it was all ways going to be a recipe for disaster.

Unless you are an absolute star getting drafted to GWS most likely means a few games and traded out within 3 years for a pick that gets a player who is the in the same position.

E.g pick 15 2 years later traded for a pick, 2 years later traded for a pick etc.

Now this may just be optics and not actually true but it sure seems like it.

Not sure what Caldwell will cost Essendon in terms of a trade, but wonder if they'll come back in 2 years time to try & get that player also...

And there, in just one tweet, is all you need to know about why the Giants are a doomed franchise.

And it's actually even worse than it looks at first glance. These two have actually fled to go to...Essendon.

Actually, I think these couple of tweets (in response to Tom's tweet above), do a better job of explaining why they are doomed

So Carlton, Brisbane, GWS and Port have to deal with DODO all ready. Have to say Trade period will be funny as hell for any club not in that group.

Not really. Everyone who is just trying to act sensibly is ultimately caught up by the frustrating stalemates that Dodoro will foist upon every club he 'deals' with. Even clubs outside this group who want to deal with any of them will end up being burned by the way in which Adrian holding his breath until he turns purple prevents everyone else from moving forward as reasonable adults.

He is both a time waster and a waste of time. An unchecked menace, with power and relevance well beyond his objective merit in the role.

Things could have got a lot easier for all, as Carlton are know to want our 2 picks

With Jye going, that could simplify things much further. We could give Carlton Pick 7 for 13 and 18, without asking for anything back - so you're getting more for Caldwell. They could then pass 13 on to you for Caldwell, and then pass 18 on to Essendon for Saad and their 2nd

You end up with Pick 9 + our Pick 13

Something like this? (nb Essendon don't have a 2nd round pick)

ClubGiveGet
Geelong13+187, Jeremy Cameron (FA)
GWSCaldwell, Jeremy Cameron9 (Compo Pick), 13
Carlton7Saad, 42
EssendonSaad, 42Caldwell, 18

Hmm, not 100% on it. Seems a little unbalanced, and relies on GWS taking the compo.

edit: In time order

Trade 1: Geelong 13+18 for Carlton 7
Trade 2: Carlton 13+18 for Essendon Saad and 42
Trade 3: Essendon 13 for GWS Caldwell
FA: GWS Cameron to Geelong for Compo 9

I don't mind multi club deals but no way Carlton pay that for Saad it is the whole reason they are looking to split 7 with us or Brisbane etc

That was my thoughts too. I guess they could just trade 13 for Saad and hold onto 18
