It appears to be the sort of draft that there is a fair bit of unpredictability between 15-30. I’ve now seen a number of phantoms and in every case there are players that look more attractive to me than the ones taken even if we retain our current picks but also there are situations with a couple of others where it would have been prudent to trade up to secure a particular player that otherwise wouldn’t have been available. Assuming we have the flexibility to trade up on the night if we wish then we have the best of both worlds.

With the lack of footy the last two years... it has the potential to be a dogs breakfast ..and they are the pro's

It would be diverting to look at who all these phantoms have us taking ...who knows there might be someone who gets it spot on. Even in our phantom I have no doubt if we all picked for Geelong with the players available we would come up with a different players selected, sometimes thru taste and some times thru ignorance. We probably just have not seen enough footy to make reasonable judgments..... and after all that we will still have players that mostly R2 picks. ..and no matter who we pick...id say statistically we probably will be doing well to get 2 players that play 100 games+

If we can replicate 2016 and get three players that will get to 100 plus and a B&F winner we will have done exceedingly well.

This is all true but I’m sure you would admit that those that take Conway with our first pick can be immediately dismissed!

Its not what I'd do, its not what I think the club will do but in four years time if Conway is where Darcy is now then we might all be saying it's what we should have done. I think next year a kid call Northam might be better use of an early pick on a Falcon tall.

Thanks for the insight :)

What are your thoughts on afl clubs releasing players for all irelands in offseason for their mental well-being? Would it be well received or possible given calendar of seasons?

Would love to hear your thoughts on what makes a Gaelic player succeed in afl, I’m no regular watcher of the sport but I did see the Mayo draw in the semi against Dublin in the rain and the crowd was incredible!

For what it’s worth I love occonor and think he hasn’t reached his potential yet and is already very good, I felt early in his afl career his natural instincts got in the way a bit as from what I can tell if you have the ball and are running down the field, trying to avaid in Gaelic you can present your back to the opponent to protect the ball and then bounce off them and continue to try run forward or fish it off as this is possible in the absence of tackling - in AFL this is of course just submitting to a potential tackle and looks a bit silly!

I think that is partially why the Irish do better as backman as what has worked for them, dodging and breaking lines since 8 year olds when around goals doesn’t translate to afl well

Sorry to steal one of your best players but I love getting the Irish players in :)

Well now then.
I was at a Mayo Club championship match today here in Ireland, and a neighbouring club of Oisin Mullins was playing. A guy beside me told me he was talking to Oisins mother yesterday evening and he hasn’t decided at all yet whether to take up the offer to go to the AFL.This guy reckoned that he was leaning towards not going to Australia at all!
I must say it’s strange that it was just one journalist (Maurice Brosnan), an Irish guy based in Melbourne but working for Irish media outlets, that ran with this story. Geelong have not confirmed it at all. Did old mate Maurice take a leaf from the sam Edmund/tom Browne trade week playbook, and pull the trigger too early??

Sounds like he would be very happy to land at geelong.. shame he is not FS. The 51-100 games range are always a bit unlucky... it was not always 100 games and clubs did not have to pay much for them back when it was 50. How much did Brisbane have to cough up for JBrown?

"Millie and I have been best friends forever. We used to do everything together. When we were younger we were mad Geelong supporters and we used to play the Geelong theme song in the laundry and then run out with the cup in our hands. We thought we were playing a Grand Final and at half-time would come out with the oranges. She's two years older than me but I joined in with her footy, which has been a part of our lives forever," he said.

"She definitely always had me covered until I hit puberty and got a bit stronger and started growing and I haven't looked back. I'd say up until 14 she smacked me. I am really proud of what she's achieved and she's a really good role model for me in a sort of similar path."

Geelong holds four picks between No.22 and 34, with Brown looming as a possible option for the Cats in that range. The idea of following his dad and his sister in the blue and white hoops sits well with Brown, although anywhere will do.

"If I get selected by the Cats I reckon that would be unreal. I've gone for them my whole life and to go to a club you've barracked for would be unreal, I'd love that. But also if I was to go anywhere else I'd be just as rapt as well," Brown said.

Oh. We may be getting all excited for no reason.

Can't see anything on the club website about him as yet. So as you say, one report and a lot of other media have just run with it.

Sounds like a good young man, zero ego.

Brisbane were lucky under the old rules you only needed 50 games and browns dad played 51.

I really like tom brown i think hes such a solid kick and decision maker and can play on all lines..to me he might not have the absolute ceiling of some in this draft but hes one of the safest picks in a risky draft imo..at worst he becomes a solid role player at best he becomes a duncan level player..some of his poise in traffic reminds me of duncan in his early days so id be happy to get brown. The good news of getting 22 for clark is it gives us more chance at brown as i reckon 20s is where clubs will be likely to pick him. I just hope hawthorn dont take him at 21 that would hurt. It will be interesting to see if we try and trade up on the night if we get wind one of the clubs in the teens is likely to take him..essentially we did this with holmes as we planned to take him with our R2 but we got wind melbourne were going to take him just after richmonds pick so we traded up. It was risky but it looks good so far and brown could be the same.

Any footage of Brown?

Can you remember what they had to pay for him?

I agree with you. I think he exhibits afl traits. One could see him play like Enright or Stewart or numerous other intercept HBF we have had over my years watching Geelong. A very Geelong type.. and as you say one can see similarities to players like Duncan although I day he is probably a more natural backman than him. He is probably not our most dire need..but I have few fears about getting value from our pick if we select him. Add a player like him and a true young mid and the draft will be a tick.

I can see a bit of his dad in him when he marks the football. Paul was a seriously good footballer on his day.

Brown was like a few players, more talented than given credit for. We had so many talented players that only so many got out from the shadow of the big trees.

Its a bit of a shame he is not FS as I have little doubt we would take him.

Yeah i like his courage overhead when intercepting marks and his ability to read the ball flight and as i said his decision making in traffic...its poised and he is solid by foot and thats hard to teach.

I do agree he probably starts in the back half but i think he has midfield potential long term. I think at worst he will be a solid back half role player ala jed bews (and if you get 150 games from a R2 pick in a draft like this youve done well there will be a lot of busts in that range this year) and at best he can be duncan level i really think he can get there. I remember thinking when we drafted mitch i like this kids decision making and calmness and brown seems similar. To become a full time mid at the next level he will need to bulk up a little bit and build his inside game a bit (like mitch did when we moved him from HF to midfield) but i can see him transitioning to that role long term and the kid seems like one of the hardest workers in the draft he will give himself every chance. He might go before we pick but hopefully doesnt.

Same old story. Someone will slip thru.

From memory Duncan slipped thru to 28 because he was looked at as an outside player. Has played almost the most games from players in that draft now. Very handy late 20's pick

I agree i think we 100 % would have nominated him if we could have. Still doesnt mean we wont get him with a bit of luck though. I only saw his dad play a few times but he seemed as solid as you described so hopefully tom will be similar.

Yeah its one of those ones he was underrated in that draft year from memory as people had concerns over his contest game and if he was too vanilla but he would be top 5 in that draft if you re did it now. I remember the eagles board crying for years that they took stevens and weedon ahead of him. Brown similarly i reckon is underrated in this draft class but we will only know when we look back in 5 years. Would be an interesting trade if the clark pick ends up getting used on brown.

My bet is we could win on that trade...and thats with Clark having already played 29 games. After about 8 game in his first year , Duncan was a lock. With the age of our list Brown could simulate that.
