Sonsie and Butler are 2 who I think are definitely getting over hyped and are in that category of I would let another club draft him.

Sonsie has had only 1 good game in the last 2 years. Given that game was in the vfl it was good for his resume. However I think that if we had a full Nab league season he would have slid down a lot more draft boards. He is lucky his u16's year was so good. Not only is his production a question mark but I also have a few question marks about how his game translates to afl. Imo his two biggest weaknesses are his contested capabilities and running capacity/workrate. It is an odd combination of weaknesses to have meaning he doesn't have the contested ability to make it as an inside mid and neither does he have the running capacity/workrate to make it as an outside player. I think for him to make it at afl he has to significantly develop his game meaning that he isn't deserving of a top 35 pick in this years draft. Especially when you have so many other mids with higher upside and a higher level of production.

The Butler one is just bizarre in my opinion. He has some good traits but there is just no production on the board. In the games I watched I never really noticed him, you look at the stats sheet and it corroborates with your opinion but then he is getting so much hype in the media so you re watch his games and then you are just left puzzled. I simply can't pick him over the many mids who have who have performed so well this year.

Zac Taylor I really really really like. Imo best kick in the draft. Just ever so slightly ahead of Wanganeen-milera. It speaks volumes when his biggest weakness is his contested side given that his contested capabilities are actually pretty good. Then his last month his production was Daicos level. He is the one I would be eyeing of at 22(24).

I do like Brown, However what I would do for more value on the night is use our pick 50 on Rayson. I think Rayson is one of those undervalued players. Him and brown are my top two rebounding defenders (yes even ahead of Sinn) because from what I have seen they have the better intercepting capabilities meaning that they don't need to be fed the footy to have an impact.

I might do a post later about all the players I would consider at each pick for geelong so let me know if you would be interested in that.

I was just thinking that re Butler and then read your post, couldn't put it better. I don't understand the appeal at all.

100% agree re Taylor and have been on him since day 1. I just can't see how a player like him lasts to 22 though, despite all the Phantoms having him going 2nd round.

Keen to see your analysis if you have time to put it together.

Shows there is more to making to afl level than just talent. You have to want it.

“If I was living closer to Geelong, I’d be playing for Joeys again next year.”

Asked if he harboured ambitions of playing at a higher level, Walsh said: “Not at this stage.

“I’ll play with Colac.”

Doesn't seem to be many solid mature-age options this year, probably diluted by the mid-season draft. Surely Bailey Rogers is worth a punt:

" The Claremont on-baller claimed this year’s Sandover Medal – the WAFL’s highest individual honour – after kicking 29 goals and averaging 28 disposals from his 18 home and away games. "

I have a feeling we will grab Brown with our first pick.. I don't think we will trade up at all, unless its a really good deal.
The value this year is picks in the 30's... Team recruiters don't have all the information this year and there is a higher probability (than in previous drafts) that a few gems could slide...

Just a bit of food for thought.
Best Player Available.
Interesting concept.
But isn't The Best Player at his position an even better prospect one could say.
So there might a few curveballs coming up.
Best forward available @22 Jack Williams. Ideal replacement for the Hawk??
Best 2 Way BIG swingman @22 Jacob Van Rooyen. Will be a early teen IMO.
Best Ruckman available @32? @34? Toby Conway.
Best available Tall defender @30 Rhett Bazzo after Hibcus/JVR

I wouldn't put anything past Wells.
We have needs and the best way to fill them might be so obvious that we cant even see them.

Would it surprise me if we took Williams & Bazzo ?? Nah not really.
Would it surprise me if we traded up for JVR or even Tom Brown??

2 more week to go.... Can't wait.

What you've described is needs-based. Best player available means best player regardless of position. Hawkins is 34 next season, we're not finding a replacement for him in this draft, Williams would take 4-5 years to come on, at least. In fact, Hawkins' replacement is Jeremy Cameron.

I don't think we have any glaring needs, and I firmly believe you should always take best available anyway.

There are some 24 yo mature prospect mids that look good, that would fill an age gap in our list and provide immediate midfield help. Would'nt be surprised if our last pick goes to one of them. Also still think Hugh Stagg is way under-rated and could be a late pick bargain for someone.

Yep... He's got a bit of something that I like.

Not necessarily needs based.
Just the best player at that position is what i am trying to convey.
If that means that is a position of need for us. Then Excellent!! We've killed 2 birds!
Williams is the Best Tall forward in the draft IMO. Well behind Darcy that is.
We have 2 forwards. One being 34yo and the other 29yo.
Sav is a project of sorts... be it in the ruck or forward.
Sounds like a logical choice one would say...yes??
Bazzo is rated a top 3 tall defender... another position of need. Blitz is 30 odd & SDK hasn't done anything yet.
Again... Sounds like another logical choice..??
Would that change if we signed Schlensog?? Maybe yes, maybe no.

As i said... What Wells does will not cause me to raise even an eyebrow TBH.
The list going forward has holes on the horizon that need to being addressed.
Whether they are addressed via this years draft. Via next years draft. Or via free agency.

22 23 and 30 in that scenario (24 25 and 32 post bids).

Having list spots open to have the option to use in a mid season draft ..would be one way to go...especially if we feel there will be options missed.

Some have strong opinion on names in this thread... to be honest... I'm not fussed who we take.. thats the clubs job and business.. but on their head be it.

We must get two long term players from this draft, ideally better than just fringe. What we can not do is keep adding players to churn over and over. ...so just adding players to fill spots has little appeal to me....so if we fill the list they better work out. ..and even 22,23 and 30 are probably rubbery.

Id say if we get Brown somehow ..he is probably the least rubbery from what I have seen for those in that range... seem almost Pnp in style ..if he can cover ground well enough

My hopes:

1. Trade 32 + 34 for WB’s 23
2. Select Tom brown
and zac taylor with 22 & 23
3. Select Alleer or Dean with 30
4. Macdonald
or Judson Clark with our last pick
5. Stay away from knevitt. A tall lanky flat footed style in the mid is a red flag for mine

FWIW. I Would rather use 32+34 to get into the 1st round as Tom Brown will be gone before the 2nd round starts IMO.
Alleer? Pass. Dean? If Schlensog signs i doubt it, but i'd take Bazzo b4 Dean.
Macca is a diamond in the rough, wont be there at pick 50(or even 43) i reckon. But i'd take him with pick 30 or 32 if we still have it.
AS for Knevitt, couldn't agree more... Pass 4 Me.

Good post. Plenty of different views. Love that. Cheers

Best available...its not like its a pre-determined list. Best available in who's eyes. personal like and dislikes has to influence that, as do needs.

On best available, one may as well say when one goes into dan murphys ..just get the best available alcoholic beverage. One might argue that for some with a top5 pick , Mac Andrew is best available ..yet I doubt he would be for all.

Need also has to play a role.I see GWS have said they have moved on from just picking the best available to just join a que of players who then get denied a chance to play, as they will then move on for opportunity.

Personally I'd not select those WA players you have mentioned with our first pick. I do not particularly rate JVR. but I could imagine how they would appeal to some. Best available? Yes it is interesting concept.

Great point re mid season draft. There has to be young guys pop up early next year all over the place that no one saw coming, if everything is back up and running, more so than any other year. Half of these kids haven’t had a decent chance to display their development for a couple of years now.

To be honest, I don't think either sound like logical choices. We have a need for a KPD and KPF now, not in 5-7 years time when these draftees will be ready.

I'd say they'd have a list that ranks players... all players, all sorts, all types.
So i'd say wells will have a predetermined list prior to the draft.
From Mids be them big small medium to forwards tall-med-small to backs to rucks to utilities etc etc...
In Wells' eyes of course... and maybe to a lesser extent Mackie & TS i suppose.
Agree totally on the need being a factor.
Thats why i highlighted certain players at positions that will indeed become a need in 1-2 or 3 years time that might be called out on draft night.
Fair enough on those two WA players i mentioned. But if they were called out it wouldn't surprise me nor bother me too much.
As we are just footy followers on BF that have more than a passing interest in our team and those we acquire be it in the draft or via trade/or free agency.

Gonna be a great 2 weeks coming into the draft.
