Anyone interested in what Mattaes Phillipou has to offer the cats if we select him should watch this

No. Just no.
I’ve seen this type of kid at juniors so often.
Just a get it and go type who floats the ball when under pressure.

Pick 30? Ok, but not pick 8.
I do love how he bounces the ball though :)

Am I right in saying that only 12 players have been invited to the 1st night of the draft and they like to present the top 10 on stage.

If that's the case do clubs have to notify the afl if they intend to select from outside that group. I'm pretty sure Cockatoo was a late call up on the day when we picked him at 10.

No he was talked about and in fact was rushed to to draft night..
2-3 days before the draft people had to do some serious web searching and phone ringing... as he was a pick in the 20-30 range if i remember correctly.
Thus the reason for a rush to get him on a flight at 24 hours notice.
Definition of a BOLTER i'd say.. yeah?

Glad to see a couple of posters mention Elijah Hewitt...looks all class from the clips I have seen....so good on either side of his body.....and gets the footy...
Does a lot of good things well. Real well. Moves like he has all day. Has talent in spades.
As with all young blokes it's between the ears that makes the real difference.
Eddie Betts is our hidden gem if we go down this track IMO.

Phillipou: much smarter people than me on this forum have dismissed young Phillipou. I've made a point of watching his highlight reels. Apart from the obvious - takes marks and kicks long - he also seems to have clean hands as in takes one-grab marks, and is very quick over the first 2 or 3 metres and so gets away from the pack.

I also noted a run-down tackle and a very quick and clever handball out of the scrum.

Is it that folks question his capacity to compete against bigger bodies?

David, you’re old school like me.
I’d like your thoughts.

Phillipou

Something was irking me. I had to go back and look at the highlights to work out why a left footer floated the ball so much.

I may have the answer. He holds the ball predominantly in the right hand.
What left footer bounces right handed?

There’s hardly any vision of him handballing but when he does he appears to panic at shifting the ball to his left side.
( and when I mean shift, I don’t mean putting the ball in your left hand but changing body weight)

Have you seen that before? You’re a left footer aren’t you?
It’s almost like he’s a right footer. but there’s no vision of him kicking right foot.

In my opinion there is absolutely nothing that is elite.

And look at the photo in this thread.

I win the internet.

It would be astounding if he called someone that is not in the R1, perhaps top15 of most phantoms.

He wont.

Assuming sheezel wardlaw and tsatas are gone it's basically going to be one of clark, humphrey, ginbey, mckenzie, phillipou or busslinger (depending on who gets through to us). While i like hewett and hollands i doubt either is in the conversation for 7 so it will be one of those 6 imo. Unless we were to live trade down from 7 into the teens i dont see us taking anyone left field, with a top 10 pick i think we will be straight down the line.

Yes they do.
We got wind the guy we were going to take was going earlier than 10 so we told the afl cockatoo was our 2nd choice so they rushed him there on draft day.
It is possible for a player outside the 15 or so invited to the telecast to go top 10 but its very very rare.

If true, great pick up

I remember a similar thing being said about Stevens just after we drafted him.

Don't think we will go McKenzie.

It will be one of Clark, Busslinger, Humphrey, Phillipou, Tsatas in that order imho.

I'd have Phillipou ahead of Humphrey and maybe Busslinger personally, actually I'd have him at top pick for us. Just have a feeling we might not go Phillipou after getting Knevitt, despite Phillipou being a better prospect.

I like tsatis but he like a few players that I think they might have been late R1 in another draft. Players that can find the ball at the lower level..usually can do the same at the higher level. What I wonder is how he cope with others also being able to do the same around him. There must be some sort of ?? over him if they are talking about home slipping.
I think Tsatas just played to his strengths, when you have the quality inside mids he was playing with he didnt have to crack in and win his own ball constantly, have heard a few people label him as a seagull and I think that's pretty harsh.

No league debut, only three reserves games averaging just 14 disposals. A 192cm, 82kg mid playing against kids in a weak SANFL U18 comp. Not sold.

Thanks for sharing your highlights though, Mattaes.

Gee I like the look of Hewett. Would love either him or McKenzie

Was a bit enamoured with Phillipou and thought he could be like Bont. The footage compared to Bont before he was drafted doesn't really stack up.

I find it very hard to pick who will and won't be good at AFL level from the pre Draft vision. It's not until I see them in an AFL game where you can see some signs and even then some players take a couple of years to find their feet and show flashes.
