Just listened to the first 10 picks of Cal Twomey and Kevin Sheehan's alternate pick (club needs) mock draft. Cal had us taking Humphrey with Clark still on the board. Those two and Busslinger are my 3 preferred (realistic) picks for us, so I'd be happy with that.

Interesting...

What was the rationale behind Humphrey, out of curiosity?

I think he has huge potential.
You're definitely are a glass half full kinda guy. I'm definitely the opposite.

I'll be very happy if Kroeger turns out to be decent but I won't be holding my breath.

He played 5 games in 2021 for the Eastern Rangers and averaged 13 touches... basically didn't get on the park in 2022 at all.

For me, he is a pick #48 that has hardly played in 3 years and looking at his highlights he appears nothing above average in terms of ability or athletic traits at the top level.

I won't be shocked if he is off our list in the next 1 or 2 years.

Of course, I'm very glass half empty... but the reality is most of these types don't cut the mustard long term.

Good luck to him though.

The kid is a weapon.

A DeGoey/Heeney type that is powerful in tight, hard to hold onto, and can take a strong mark (also adds flexibility Danger style).

Powerful explosive goal-kicking mids like that don't grow on trees.

I said from the get-go that I'd love him... But think he will either be gone or we just take Clark anyway.

Anyway, my opinion means nothing and I just hope whoever we take ends up being a long-term gun.

Oh my bad lol, that's not what I meant. I know how good Humphrey is, and he's definitely someone I wouldn't mind drafting...but I was more asking why he was picked as a positional need - given the context of the alt. draft Sheehan and Twomey did :)

There wasn't much behind it he pretty much just said Humphery is one of his personal favorites and he was still on the board. It wasn't like his phantom draft where he tries to actually get the picks right it was more of a who would you pick if you were a recruiter type thing.

Not in regards to every player. I'm of the opinion Knevitt won't cut the mustard..

Jury is out on him, still early though... I do see some traits he has that hopefully in time can by capitalized on.

I looked at Holmes in his first year and knew he had extreme speed, but didn't know how to use it... He started using it at the mid point this season gone.

Knevitt has decent speed/height and can definitely take a decent overhead grab for a mid... Might take him a couple of years to put it all together... but he has some tools that others just don't have to begin with.

That certainly doesn't mean he will make it though... But it definitely buys him more time in my eyes than others that just look run of the mill.

A bit of conjecture about Phillipou around here but I will say this: If there's one club that could utilise his strengths and minimise his flaws it's us.

I've just got a feeling that if he goes to an Essendon or St Kilda which is being suggested, that it won't end well. He's a confident type, bordering on arrogant and you can see that in his interviews (For anyone interested, there's some in-depth stuff about this on the D&T board)

If he goes to a struggling club with a poor culture like the aforementioned, he'll play early, probably be one of the better players and he'll be drinking his own bathwater by April. I think it's likely he'll get the 'messiah' treatment...these clubs are crying out for a poster boy to get them back on track and sell hope to the supporters.

On the other hand, if he came here we'd handle him a lot better IMO. We're off the back of a flag and every chance to be better next year with new recruits. There's sound logic that we don't even need him, and he could therefore mature in the VFL for a couple years and maybe be mentored by a Selwood, Dangerfield, Kelly etc.

He'd be able to mature both as a person and a footballer. Come to the realisation that while yes he's talented, he's still got a lot of work to do to be one of the better players in the competition.

For players like this you have to approach things differently. They've been the best player in their team since juniors, been the schoolboy hero etc....they're not used to not being 'needed' so to speak. It'll be an important development process for him and one that he won't get at other clubs at the top of the order.

I doubt we draft him as he doesn't seem like our type at all, but if we do I expect it to go like this.

The noise is getting louder with each interview and article. Where there's smoke, there's fire. I don't want him.

All that is true but his kicking is a worry. I think clark is a safer pick but i wouldnt be against humphrey.

I havent watched any highlights of any of them - just read the last couple of pages - and the wraps on Humphrey are pretty good

But re his kicking - that you point out - is there an AFL player - can be any team who has got a kicking action similar to him

For the people rating Kroeger... Can you please give some insight on why?
From viewing him at Eastern, very explosive- strong, quick, very good overhead.
Reminds of??? Danger, dare I say it.
Has not grown into his body yet.

I'd say his foot skills are very good too.
