Agree. Just too much pressure for list spots. Have been feeling all along there would be an unexpected retirement/trade, and there might be both ... I wonder whether it's one player we are talking about (so either GWS or Pies) or whether the Cats are exploring options to send a player to both places to preserve 18. Just have a gut feeling we will want at least two good picks at the draft. No idea how we do it ...
Mackie has said he is only taking two picks to the draft.

Three years is too long.
If a club can't persuade its involuntary conscripts to stay within the free hit 2 years, they should be allowed to go.

Having had a quite a lot to do with people at this age, I would say pretty strongly that there is a significant difference between two years and three - even physical maturity comes into it, but so too social and emotional, as well as feeling more at home for having watched not one but two years of newbies come in, for whom you suddenly get to be mentor and exemplar. I can see it working for all clubs, not just the non-Victorian ... Melbourne ones might be more comfortable drafting those from SA and WA ...

The real sticking point point is the cutoff. If you make it all draftees then clubs will rookie players in preference to using late picks (no Jed Bews, maybe no Kolo); if you make it first round then yes, it will be unfair to those two or three or are just near the line. Which happens all the time, not least in team selection.

Okay, so..

Out: Selwood, Higgins, Dalhaus, Stevens, Evans, Narkle, and Williams (7)

In: Atkins, Close, Bruhn, Henry, Bowes, Pick 7 and Pick ??? (7)

So we could keep Sav in that scenario..

Apparently Williams was a rookie pick so that means someone else will need to make way for 2 to be drafted onto the primary list.

Interesting to see Geelong play hard on their targets. Feels like we are really wanting to keep our first rounders. Also, feels like the Bowes trade will come post the other two moves. I can’t help but look into the future and think we want to keep a future pick for next offseason to bring TDK over.

My understanding (obviously not being a lawyer) was that stuff like the draft probably is on shaky legal ground, it is just no one has had the incentive to seriously test it. I do wonder if restricting what clubs can do - which seems to me to move from trying to ensure a level playing field to actively punishing success - would provide that incentive.
It was noted at the admin of State Level football back in the 90's, that the draft is restraint of trade. But no one was going to challenge it. What 18 year old is going to turn down 80k or whatever it is, for a system where lower drafted players are going to get peanuts?

No williams has a rookie so we have only one spot for the national draft. If you want 2 picks in the national draft (as a pose to rookie draft) we have to trade a player or delist (re rookie) simpson.

I think it's just posturing so we can try setting a future 2nd back here or there

Wasn’t long ago we were the running joke in the AFL, “X player isn’t old enough for Geelong, wait til he’s 36 and then he’ll go there”, retirement village”

“Geelong can’t win finals under Scott, they’ll fail again and we’ll all laugh at them”

“They can’t win at the G, no hope for the flag”

We win the flag, young players want to come to us, we’re also now about to acquire pick 7 too, and it’s all “BS, this can’t happen, they’re cheating”

“AFL needs to step in and stop this from happening”

“Trade bans for Geelong”.

How it’s all changed in the space of 2 weeks, suck it up oppo fans, the tears taste wonderful!

Absolutely. I can remember some well known tiger trolls saying that the natural order is to drop down the ladder and Geelong’s refusal to do so would consign them to years of finals disasters. Well, well, wells wells.

I’m not aware of many precedents in Australia of court action against sporting league rules. Would a restriction on trading be that different to current rules that promote equalisation like the draft? Not sure.

In the US there are some exemptions for sporting competitions from antitrust and labour laws that are now being challenged. It could happen here but the money on the line isn’t as big so the cost of litigating it might not be worth it.
The draft in the NRL was abolished because of court action by a player (Terry Hill) who argued that it was restraint of trade.

Ratugolea wants to head to Port Adelaide

ByPeter Ryan

Clubs in pursuit of Geelong big man Esava Ratugolea have been made aware that the 24-year-old would like to get to Port Adelaide during this trade period.
Geelong have been reluctant to let the contracted Ratugolea depart despite him playing just four senior games this season as they believe he can offer them depth in many parts of the ground and the coach Chris Scott is a big believer in his talent.

do you think theyre petty enough to jump in front like that?
Nah, unlike their supporters they'd only select him if they actually want him IMO, not to be petty, even though their supporters would love the idea. I think there is a reasonable chance they pick him though (if he's still there). But who knows where they rate Clark or we do in comparisson to others that might be available with our respective picks.

There might be other players available at our pick that Mackie rates higher than Clark such as Mackenzie, Phillipou etc. Or someone who was touted to go around pick 15. Mackie himself was a shock pick when his name was read out at pick 7.

As we've seen over the years with Wells, we don't always select who us supporters want and who the media draft experts think we should. That's what makes draft night so exciting as a Cats supporter ha ha

Hopefully this top ten pick we’ll receive from Gold Coast shows a bit more loyalty than the previous one we had.

Oh man that sucks. I know he’s not currently in our best 22 but the potential is still untapped in my opinion. I’ve grown quite fond of the big fella even though I know he isn’t everyone’s favourite on here.

I wouldn't be mad about Sav leaving if we can package him and one of our 3rds to get an F2 back.

That would allow us to complete all our targeting trades this year

Henry = 18 this year
Bruhn = 1st next year
Bowes = 2nd next year
