The footage of how lazy Darcy has been at Frem since he signed his 7 year deal is pretty damning and a good example of a player getting a fat contract then going downhill...
Tim Kelly's first year at West Coast was his worst year in the AFL.

I'd love to get some data on players form in OOC seasons compared to their year 1 on a cushy big contract.

Umm he's a former Geelong Falcon so we can add another local to our squad?

Umm he can fill the wing role we've been sorely lacking since Smithy left

Umm he should not cost a lot to get?

Umm he's a mature enough body that he's not completely cooked while also not being not ready?

I'm literally trying to talk myself into it, i don't want to be a downer

Would someone please explain to me the merits of recruiting Wood?
He's free is the main (only) one.

Depending on how many people retire/get delisted this year and next, we may have a lot of list spots to fill. Wood is probably better for a couple of years than filling those spots with a pick 90 (assuming on not much $$$).

But this links with the Stengle negotiations. If Stengle goes as a FA, we wouldn't want to get wood in as a FA because he'd dilute our compo. So, then we'd have to trade for him, which would nullify the biggest attraction of getting him.

The Stengle Dilemma.
The questions were posed last night at work.
If we fall off the cliff in the coming 2nd half of the season.
A pick 5-6 could be well on the cards.
If TS signs with team A for $850 x 5 years.
1st round pick compensation gives us a pick after ours at 6 or 7.
Going into the draft with a hand of Pick 5 & 6/or 6 & 7.
*We lose it/or it drops down a round or two if we gain other free agents as it's a NET EFFECT compensation as i read it.
So the upcoming recruiting season regards free agents and restricted free agents pose another obstacle regards to that comp pick.
Are we in a half full or half empty glass scenario??
Just some points to think about if TS decides to leave.
Cheers!

I agree. Dangerfield was pretty average in 2016, likewise Cameron in 2021 after getting their fat paychecks to come here...

They didn't turn up overweight and content at their new clubs like Kelly did.

Some people take the foot off once they secure the bag.

Plenty of players all of a sudden turn it on when they are OOC and playing for future $$$.

I'm not saying Stengles form is due to being OOC by the way... because this is his default form when fit IMO (was battered last year twice and couldn't get going).

I do not know how Stengle will handle a big contract, but we will find out because he is getting one.

I'm not down with losing him but we will just have to wait and see what happens.

He's not free if him coming in cancels out the compo for stengle

I was mainly poking fun. But there are plenty of example of players having their best seasons just after a contract season, not before (Dangerfield, Petracca, Curnow). So I doubt there's a negative relationship there even though people bring it up sometimes.

But you're right that Stengle is getting a (justified) big pay increase next year regardless of if he stays, so we'll just have to wait and see. But if he has a down year next year, here or somewhere else, I'm not confident it has anything to do with his contract status.

we, for a change... cough... JUH.... cough.... aren't directly in line to get shafted by the AFL rule change currently so I kinda want to see some others the rough pineapple.... but its really shit by the AFL to move the goalposts on this one.

Clubs put 18 months worth of planning into drafting etc and to have the AFL shake the snowglobe this late in the piece is shit.

Yep I’m still annoyed at that one as well as Gudien from the swans ? Both could has been very handy right now

yeah but Guilden was an academy match from memory as Wells called him out and Swans matched.
That at least was in the rules.

The JUH boundary shift was a total shafting.

Point is that the AFL equalisation only works on the favour of the northern states we have continually got ****ed over the academy picks and the shifting of rules at the last minute

I absolutely guarantee that in a few years time when we have a few F/S picks haul the AFL will **** us over it again I can see it from miles and miles away

I don't know why people constantly bring up how players all of a sudden play a lot better when up for a new contract. Being due for a new contract is akin to being under performance review at work, of course you are gonna pull your finger out and maybe stay that extra hour at the end of the day. Its normal for all of us.

I would be backing him to be his current version for the next 5 years, which is a 45-55 goal a year player, who makes our forward line go.
I think his future is extremely hard to read. All Australian recognition is good but he is significantly better this year than he was in 2022. He moves with a lot more purpose off the ball. He has real strength at the contest for his size.

But I worry that with his attributes I feel as if he’ll be one of those guy who gets away with things by inches and once he becomes the guy that the opposition targets I’m not sure if he’ll be able to pull through it. The question that needs to be answered is will he be a driver of our success. If so then money doesn’t really matter that much.

In most every sport around the world, the myth around performance during and after “contract years” has been debunked.

It doesn’t make any difference.

Yep, he has been better this year, which coincides with him hitting the start of his peak age for performance.

I would guess that he will be at this level (injuries of course are the wild card) for the foreseeable future.

I think he is already the guy that the opposition targets, and he has performed anyway. He is so smart, and an amazing ball user and finisher in front of goals. But to me, his biggest strength is his ability to win contests inside 50. He is deceptively strong, and can take a contested mark against the opponents he will always get (ie. the oppositions best small defender). It is this rare combo of attributes that makes me compare him to T Greene from 3 years ago.

We will absolutely regret it if we don’t pay up to keep him.
