I have a lot of reservations about bringing in Oliver for obvious reasons, but it's an absolute joke that Melbourne have treated him like this for two years in a row. If his issues are so serious, make him someone else's problem and try and preserve whatever positive culture you still have left. If his issues aren't as serious as speculated, why is their CEO phoning clubs offering him and then shutting down trade prospects when a club actually shows interest?

Regardless of who he plays for in 2025, I think Oliver needs to force a trade to get away from that circus.

Same people who go on about how terrible it is to live in Geelong, yet we constantly attract players here because it’s a bloody good life here (especially if you have the money). Those same supporters live in tinny little units cramped into each other, hearing your neighbours, not having a garden - living pretty ordinary lives overall - and they call it urbane (if they even know the word).

You mean urban?

My fave thing about all this is the people that all the people pissing and moaning about "No Salary Cap at Geelong!!" and similar are usually the same ones that dismiss most of our players as "cooked" or "spuds"

You point out that we have brought in 2 high profile, highly paid players in 10 years, and the rest are mostly players other supporters don't rate (Rohan, Stanley, Reg etc) or 21 year old kids who aren't on big money (Tanner, Ollie H) and out of the rest of the side it feels like half are off the rookie draft or late picks and no top top draft picks taking big dollars... AND we don't offer inflated 6-8 year panic contracts like other clubs.

Unfortunately I am convinced about 80% of footy fans share a deformed hive mind so all they can come up with is "Ugghhhh Cotton On" in response
100%
It’s absolutely hilarious listening to the drivel. No salary cap they say yet they also don’t rate our players.
It’s so weird, who do they actually think we are paying?

Social media is constructed to develop and reinforce confirmation bias.

Geelong is the Greatest Team of all, all my social media feeds tell me that every day so clearly it is true. :D

Just look at our B&F top 10

1st - Max Holmes (164 votes) - Just signed his first good 5 year contract
2nd - Zach Guthrie (120) - Would be on average contract
3rd - Jeremy Cameron (118) - Reported $8-900k
4th - Tom Stewart (117) - Signed a 3 year extension in 2023 - probably $700k
5th - Tyson Stengle (107) - Was on minimal, just signed a new 5 year deal $7-800k
6th - Gryan Miers (95) - Would be on reasonable contact $500k?
7th - Ollie Dempsey (73) - Minimal, $3-400k
8th - Ollie Henry (69) - Minimal, $3-400k
9th - Brad Close (66) - $400-500k maybe
10th - Patrick Dangerfield (65) - End of a good contract, $800kish.

Then compare that with Carltons biggest contracts -

McKay - $1.1m
Curnow -$1.1m
Cripps - $1m?
Walsh - $825k
Weitering - $800k+?
Cerra - $6-700k?
Williams - $5m over 6 years
DeKoning - $800k+
Martin - Just finished contract, was getting paid overs, reported close to $1m a year.
Saad - Likely on $6-700k

The damage this has done to the reputation of MFC is enormous. What player would now trust that club? How will they attract players behaving in this manner?

Why the need to crap on those living in the city?

For what it's worth, I love it. But diff'rent strokes and all that.

They have seemingly done a fair bit to keep his issues and transgressions under wraps - various whispers are starting to leak out now about the club being upset with his non-commitment to rehab etc in the last few weeks.

That said, they have leaked really heavily against Christian Petracca - all that "Brand Petracca" bullshit to friendly journos - so who knows.

Someone - I can't remember who, I think it was one of those ex-players who went into player management - said once that there are three values for a player:

1) The contract value you get when you stay at a club
2) The value you're worth on an open market, and
3) The contract value you get to move clubs

and that is in very heavy ascending order.

To be fair, social media can also reinforce hate bias, too. If you engage with material that makes you angry, you'll absolutely get fed more and more of it.

Why are backyards the be-all and end-all, anyway?

The local park is pretty good and I don't even have to mow it.

No idea. I'm a 10 min walk to the G, suits me fine.

I've spent time in Geelong working etc. I wouldn't live there, but there are nice spots, and shit ones...

I don't travel too far from the inner city of Melbourne though, I would imagine most people who bag Geelong as a place live inner.

The clown on with Cooney sounds like a complete nong stating that Melbourne have done the right thing with Oliver, reckons he’s worth 2 x 1st rounders and paying his full salary.
Everyone's being so hypocritical about this, on one hand saying Melbourne are crazy for paying him so much and he's a liability but then expecting full price and trade value.

So at the moment Melbourne have $10mil liability and not only should we take that on but we should give away 2 first rounders for the privilege....does my head in.

It’s either the Dees trying to extract a better offer from us before actually green lighting it… or they have read the trade value of Oliver the way the most Western Bulldogs fans read Smith’s … which is incorrectly.

Possibly we have come out and offered some crazy unders… but if they come out and officially stat they aren’t tradig Oliver only to get us to up our offer… well that would make them look even more unprofessional.

This could go either way.

We might up our offer to have the Dees hold off on making any statement, or the Dees genuinely have decided they aren’t trading him.

Imagine if Clarry blows up and has more off field incidents after keeping him.

I don’t think the Dees know what they want and are all over the shop.

The leadership is as bad as I’ve ever scene.

It’s a ticking time-bomb for the Dees.

Wouldn’t fly in the corporate world, it’s called a fire sale for a reason, you are dumping a diminishing asset or a whopping amount of debt you’ve lumbered yourself with for the next 6 years.

Take the hit, and the pain and write it off.

You’d think a team with a few accountants and lawyers as members would know a thing or two about good financial management.

Cam Luke is a clown. Dude talks like he's an expert on all things sport with a bunch of lame ass opinions.

Who even is he? What has he done of note ever to be discussing trades/players with any sort of authority?
At least Cooney was a Brownlow medalist and played 202 games.
