Ask and we'll try our best to assist - so here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

As normal, would like to acknowledge & thank Lore for creating this, keeping it up to date and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

Free Agency Closes: Friday October 11 at 5.00pm

If Melb refuse to entertain a trade then there is not much that can be done. Why you’d hold a guy that doesn’t want to be there against his will is beyond me but there’s a lot of recent events out of that club that are extremely questionable.
If CO refused to play and trade period ends.. that’s a lot of 1.3 million to pay a bloke to sit on sidelines.. and then really deleverages them at trade time next season IMO.

Go Catters

I’m no lawyer but I would assume unless deemed medically unfit to play that Oliver would need to play to satisfy his requirements of the contract to be paid. I’m not sure he can just refuse to play for them.

Maybe. I mean we might give the dogs a few days before we do that.
What we should do is trade our future 2nd for an extra 2nd this year and offer the dogs 15 + the better of the 2 2nds. Means they can't ask for the future 1st as you say and then wait for them to fold in the last hour.
What’s the rule around trading/using our F1 and F2?

Couldn't he just go do a ton of blow again, cite mental health issues, and sit the season out? It might not be planned, but it's certainly not implausible as an eventuation, if he really doesn't want to be there. As past precedent has shown, the mental health aspect is a 'loophole' of sorts - where clubs have to allow for time away if they're not in the right headspace. That's the real risk they're taking, IMO - especially if he feels a new start is what he needs, and will help his off-field issues.

Yes but Grundy is an example he never actually took a paycut he's still on his original 900k Collingwood deal it's just that 2 clubs are each paying part of it. I wonder if the afl would insist on the same here. Franklin was a different case Yes but I'm not sure they would want to open the floodgates on pay cuts given cap integrity etc. But it's all guesswork

I highly doubt it would open the floodgates. Because that would require many players actively choosing to take a pay cut. It would only be relevant in outlier cases, like this is.

I would suggest that’s probably not an ideal option for him!

Such an easy problem to solve, rather then tie the compensation to finishing position have some conversion to the DVI system, then put a cap on the pick such that it can't exceed the pick your finishing position.

That might be fairer in many ways. But as poor as the current system is, it’s simpler than what you’re describing because there are clear outcomes; compo after your pick, or end of round.

And relative to what we have now it would punish poorer clubs. I.e, high finishing clubs would be no different than currently because of the cap (e.g., buddy and hawthorn), but relatively speaking it would punish poor clubs (e.g., North likely wouldn’t have received pick 3 last year). And the AFL aren’t in the business of taking away equalisation measures from the poor clubs.

Doubt he would do that intentionally or not , but it does raises the real risk of having to go through this every post season ….cant be good for his long term mental health with that kind of stress

What’s happening with JJ at the dogs? He’s seems like he is available if a club is keen. Hasn’t had the best couple of seasons but he’s played some good footy before. If we miss on Oliver I’d be still looking for another player to add.
Maybe JJ could play a role on the wing or half back to allow others to play in the middle.
Footscary's version of Mitch Duncan... His time has passed as well.
We move on to bigger and better options.

Horrendous idea.

I think you all misunderstand what I mean here. I'm not suggesting he 'intentionally' goes out and does drugs and takes time out, I'm saying that isn't that a possibility that's what happens, if forced to stay somewhere he doesn't want to be for another full year...given his myriad of issues that he's had previously. Mental health issues are still widely misunderstood, and clubs give players whatever time they need. If he goes through the issues of the last 2 years again for another year, what's to stop him breaking down and just getting away from the club because he just can't stand being somewhere that doesn't want him anymore (feeling trapped). Same goes for Petracca.

If anyone really thought I was suggesting that he go out and buy a bag of cocaine, in order to purposely take time away from the club, that's utterly hilarious.

Averaged more disposals a game than both Bruhn and Atkins this year and can actually hit a target. Duncan on fumes is better than some of our full time midfielders

Lol Because he plays as a loose half back flanker with no opponent. The only reason he’s still on the list is his charity contract to get him 300 games then retire. He’s cooked. His impact as a sub in the prelim was sad. Turnover handball to Ashcroft for a goal because he didn’t want to take contact, run down going into an open goal because he has no speed left.

No, no, no. He's either doing dumb stuff or injured.

How did Bruhn and Atkins go in the prelim?
