The key to this is how many late first or second rounders the suns can add themselves without trading their pick 4. If they can get anywhere close then it will come down to getting an established player or the best future pick. I am hoping for that as I think it puts the hawks in the best position. I don’t see a player a club would give up good enough for pick 4. Eagles and North will be bottom 2 again so surely can’t give up their first. Hawks already said ours is on the table we can add dogs second for their remaining points if needed.
I doubt it will be on the table, but don't mind us giving up our F1 - though we'd want a little more than pick 4 for it. Next year's draft seems to be all mids at the top end and we are fine for them. We may be better off taking another tall this year.

Otherwise, I think GC should live trade for whoever gives the best combination of F1 and points this year. The advantage of the live trade being GC don't have to worry much about list positions and how many picks they can take to the draft. They get the other team to take the picks for them.

There’s no doubt their first pick will be a live trade. Or one doubt the genius of

Hey Turbocat

I think it’s one of the following and in this order IMO

1. Use pick 4 on securing an A grader from another club, who? I don’t know but there were 3 that enquired last year about joining but we didn’t have the cap space, unfortunately one of them re-signed with his current team. Your clubs windfall last trade period helped to right the ship in terms of cap space

2. Move the pick back securing a deal something like our pick for the dogs 2X firsts. Allowing us to retain the points we need and still secure a handy player in trade ( not an A grader but very handy)

3. Trade it into next year, I don’t think this is likely as we have another couple of boys that are looking promising for next years draft ( and the one after)

4. Trade up to get pick 1, I can’t see this happening but it’s possible so I added it.

Interesting.

1/ .A lot of clubs would happy to move a player for a R1 that early..if the player wants to come great. The windfall is on slow burn for us so far but Im hopeful long term.

3/ It really gets down to how good the kids are projected to be. A Jed Walster doesn't come along often. Its probably sort of like us getting Hawkins.

4/. Id think trading up to get 2 would be more achievable if north get P3 comp. Gets you before any bid. IF you got there it woudl be interesting to see who you took..you talent is running pretty thick now. McKercher or Curtin ..or perhaps , as you have so much regular talent..perhaps you go wild card and take Watson.

Holland is a question I guess. He hasnt looked anything like he did as a kid so far but he might be like Flanders and just take a while.

I can only see us dealing for a future 1st if we can’t entice an A grader to come.

We have more likely top 10 academy players coming through over the next 2 years so it would only be moving the problem

Just on this. As the kids become more and more ready , and GC make the finals next year...having a bit more collateral to trade for an A grade player next year would not be a bad thing. The trick will be to trade with someone who is probably not a finals club next year and the way this year is thats hard to predict.

I think you just give Hollands another year and another preseason to see if he can do what Flanders did, if you get a great offer for him and he wants to go then by all means move him, but if not, give the boy a chance

In fairness to him Dew didn’t play him as a mid, same for Flanders and we all saw what happened when he was given a chance. I would prefer to hold him, let’s see what Dimma thinks

And then i said you need to plan for the worse

And you replied 'no s**t'
Yes, I agree with you. Plan for the worse, hope for the best. The statement is so obvious that it literally didn’t need to be said, yet you kept repeating it.

I’m obviously not on the suns list committee and I haven’t bothered to examine possibilities for points etc.. it doesn’t interest me, but I would imagine they would have multiple scenarios pre-planned.

  • What are our trades if read gets bid on at 5
  • what are our trades if read gets bid on at 10 and then rogers gets bid on at 12

Etc.. etc..

So when one of these scenarios eventuates they just pick up the phone and dial x and say ‘you guys still good for x and y’ and the trade gets done.

Your point is a good one, unfortunately unless you know that there is somebody coming it’s not a risk you’d want to take. As I said there were a few last year very keen to come, and players that geez I’d love to have around the club, absolute quality. But who knows if that’s the case this year of next

Suns have academy not NGA :) Different rules.

Ideally, Suns would use pick 4 for A grader.

Suns will take 3 academy kids and possibly even 4 (+ Graham).

Suns will take best offer for pick 4. Clubs are lining up for it.
Problem will be to convince an A grader to go there, and the salary they would command.
I doubt an A grade player moves. Maybe Geelong offer pick 8, 2024r1. Or Melbourne offers 15,25 2024r1.
Or bulldogs offer 10,15,2024r2 for 4,42,45

How does Melbourne and Doggies offer pick 15?

This is an extract from Mark Evans letter to members today. Thought it might be of interest as it bodes well for our future

“Participation numbers in Queensland are the highest they’ve ever been, to the point where we have now overtaken South Australia for overall participation for the first time, which is a tremendous achievement for the game in Queensland”

More kids for you future. Sounds great. If you just add one or two a year id would be great for everyone.

On SEN today ..I half heard a story about Martin going to Gold Coast.. Id think that would be a very tumultuous ...good and bad. You brought your cap under control.. but he would certainly mess around with that agin. Was he one you were talking about earlier?

That wasn’t who I was talking about, it was a gun that re- signed at Sydney early in 22 after we couldn’t come up with the cap space

Agree, once we are self-sufficient, then it’s a bigger pool for everyone to pick from

Yes. The more talent there is the better.

I know some on your sight have issues about players wanting to go back home etc.. but its different era than what it was 20 years ago. Its important to have your players that choose to be at the location...as they have more choice than they have ever had.

So yes develop some , keep some ..and have other clubs picks a few... and then you will have some kids want tinh to come back home to qld.

For mine..once you start winning... I think you will be flooded by Franklin types that have been to the circus... and now like the idea of being away from the hub even if they are from a non qld state

A lifestyle by the beach, in the sunshine, and where you can walk the streets without being harassed. It will become a desirable spot for sure.

By avoiding a pick 2 bid, Suns reduce the bid by about 200 pints.

Roos trading picks 2,58,59 for the Suns pick 4 and F1.
Feels like too much from Suns who would be best to keep a F1 but instead trade F2nd and F3rd. If Im North im wanting to move pick 2 to pick 4 but I want assurances from Gold Coast they dont take McKercher and Curtin and instead take Watson and leave McKercher and Curtin to us. In that same way, North promise not to bid on Walters which saves us points to give up that future 2nd and 3rd. Something like

Pick 2, 53, 59 + future 4th for pick 4 + Future 2nd + Future 3rd with North giving future 3rd to Swans for Dylan Stephens

In this scenario North lose absolutely nothing but get future 2nd and Stephens for that nothing

No offence, that’s a horrible deal for the following reasons

It doesn’t guarantee the Eagles don’t bid so potential we gain nothing

We have enough points to cover all our draftees and don’t need more picks for which we have to have list spots for when going to the draft. We will already be bringing in at least 3 gun local draftees

Pick 4 is going to get us a haul but you’re suggesting sell it AND a future first to move up 2 spots. That’s crazy

Could see something like this playing out

Hawthorn trade Pick 3 + Brockman to West Coast for pick 2 and informing the eagles they wont select Curtin.

Hawthorn ontrade pick 2 to the Suns for Pick 4 and the suns future first.

Enables the Suns to grab a player ahead of a potential bid for Walter.

Roos just might bid on walter at 1 anyway sp thats no good to gc.

There is no need, already getting 3 first round picks this year.

Another one just means there will be more of a salary cap squeeze is a few years.

The Suns will need the future 1st. There are more academy kids to plan for.
