Review Good, Acceptable, and Putrid vs Kitty Kats

1) We almost never handball it out of the stoppage offensively (eg. not backwards and backwards and backwards) to outside runners who take off and deliver it inside 50.
... 2)The opposition has clued up to this and plants a player just outside the 50 on the flank at a 45 degree angle. We kick it to them repeatedly. We never work out of stoppages laterally, it's always backwards.
1) I noticed against all of Hawthorn, Sydney (but less effectively) and Geelong how well they did this until someone was clear to deliver the ball forward. Geelong players in those positions also seemed to break our tackles easily. I noticed that Dangerfield's arms were oily-shiny and wondered if that was a part of it.
2) In our two losses, the number of oppo marks in and around our F50 was horrible to watch. Clarkson and Chris Scott always fill up our F50 with unmanned extras (where are our blokes, when they do that?) who mark and repel our F50 entries with impunity.

Not as easy when you have two extras coming off the back of the square for every bounce
New rules have exposed our recruiting, trading or lack thereof and development of players. The other line of thought is that our recruiting is fine and its the development and the fact we wont play them that is the problem.

Our forwards can't compete in the air so they have got into the habit or been instructed to play from behind a and push the player under the ball to get the one out the back. Betts is the master of it and Walker and especially Jenkins are also not far behind. Defenders must love playing us.

Love it indeed!

I watched the Geelong game again last night and to be honest felt we played pretty good. Untill we had to create an I50 and missing some important shots in goal. Felt that way walking out of the game as well.

Defence held up ok. Few of their forwards had a massive advantage.
Movement out of the defensive 50 for the most part pretty direct.

Didnt particulalry get smashed out of the middle. Apart from a couple of centre clearance burts from Danger. Each time he was left physically unchecked as our guy also hunted the ball. Statistically the stoppage stats slightly in our favour.

Forward pressure non existant. Forward movement poor. Missing crucial goals. Forward entries all over the shop.

In a tight game that was the difference for me.

1) :( Well, it only got 'tight' after our third quarter, doncha think? 4-goal win is decisive.
2) This, definitely. I remember only JJ taking a single contested mark in our F50. Wait, Sloane as well, but he missed I think:sob:.

Yes it was tight and then we blew our chances and our lack of forward pressure, sans Murphy, gave them chances that they took.

Our poor start.to the year is 100% on our forward play IMO.

Can't fully agree with that, teams are sitting on our playmakers from the half back line Smith, Laird and Milera who are all struggling with the pressure being applied, Smith and Laird especially not coping too well......no more slingshot football or Joe the Gooses over the back for our forwards to run onto that were so much a feature in 2017......until Richmond cottoned on in the Grand Final. Now all of the AFL has cottoned on.

I agree all of that is happening. They are locking down on our defensive attacking players.

First three quarters against Hawthorn we struggled with it.

Since then we have moved the ball out of defence better despite the extra attention these guys are getting. It is not as pretty, but we are moving the ball effectively untill the final possesion into the forward line where it falls apart.

In our two losses we have had more inside 50s than Hawthorn and Geelong.

Our midfield has broke even, maybe been slightly better, in all three games.

The big problem is our forward play.

Too bad our coaches havent cottoned on

Brad Crouch kicks that late goal and we possibly win. Instead they pile on three goals to our one point in the last half of the Final Quarter.

We did not capitalize on our forward opportunities, they did. This sums it up. Written before Geelongs finsl two goals.

Why would 6-6-6 affect an inside midfielder? The center square setup is identical to what it was before

Not at all.
There is more time before the wings/flankers rush in.

Far more emphasis on being able to break away with disposal or speed.

Actually quite a bit different.

I am starting to think that with the 666 that Matt Crouch is getting exposed for his lack of pace and spread. Especially when his kicking isn't that good either.
Danger torched him numerous times out of the centre square.
He has never been good defensively.

Jenkins did it once in his career against essendon at Etihad. Has been unsighted since.

Must be time for my yearly call to play Jenkins in the midfield, not in ruck but inside mid. Huge body and some breakaway speed, he could do a Dangerfield on several occasions

Good post

Our goals were random and fortuitous. No efficiency because we couldn’t take a mark or set up a lead

Geelong on the other hand...

Another problem that has dogged us for years; we go through patches where we struggle to score, and then all of a sudden, the opposition kicks 2-3 easy ones.

No he was right the first time, we weren’t good enough with our forward pressure, no exceptions.

Eddie had 4 tackles and 13 pressure acts
Murphy 3 tackles and 12 pressure acts
Jones 1 tackle and 13 pressure acts

Put that up against Dalhaus:
7 tackles and 24 pressure acts.

No comparison. Our smalls not good enough - including Murphy

Knight had 7 pressure acts as a defensive half forward as well. Not good enough.

When Matt Crouch is the leading pressure player on our team you know we weren't working hard enough
