Review Good/Bad v Hawthorn, Round 2

Am I the only one who actually enjoys Dwayne Russell's commentary? I pay particular attention to his calls now based on the ongoing comments in here around his bias towards the Crows, but I honestly don't hear it.

I actually find him a good, strong advocate for SA generally when he calls.
I guess for me, the things that annoy me are the constant reminders... "he used to barrack for the Crows/Port", "he was an ex-Crow" sort of thing. It's clear he does his homework and likes to bring up these useless tidbits as part of his commentary. I guess it's the affiliation with Port that make you find stuff NOT to like. On the whole though, he's better than three quarters of the other flogs on there.

Its not a gold pass. Its about building the best possible team to win a flag. Hampton has showed plenty in his first 2 games as a midfielder. His defensive work is very good and he is much faster than Douglas. If he gets up and running then our midfield will be one of the fastest in the competition. You have to take risk to get reward.

Menzel is another one, he was very good in the first game and was unlucky to miss out. There are just as many question marks on Douglas and Mackay as there are on Menzel because both of those two older players are known to fade as the year goes on. Douglas already faded massively from his first game to his second. Mackay was not influential at all and his big plus point on the day was kicking 3 straight. Last season he kicked 2.12 and this season he has kicked 4.0. Question is will he go on to kick 20 goals this year, or is that pretty much all he will give us. Menzel has the benefit of doubt because he hasnt had an opportunity yet.

Yes it is about Gold passes if you pick a team based on potential, there are a few players that get picked regardless but only 4 or 5 the rest must be showing form to get a gig especially at finals time. Like you dont pick injured players you dont pick players out of form

Better than atkins? Better than matt crouch? Better than menzel?

Also you are pretending he is super fresh. Hampton is close to the 50 afl game mark

Atkins, Crouch? What are you talking about? Who is suggesting that in the slightest. And Menzel? They don't play in the same position. We are talking about Hampton and that 4th/5th inside midfield position which was last year occupied by Thommo and Lyons. Sloane and the Crouch boys are locked as 1,2,3 and Atkins is an outside player.

As for 50 games, yes, but EVERY player has to adapt to a new club. Hampton only played a handful of games in his last year at GWS and none in 2016. That is pretty much 2 years out of the AFL. But the biggest change is that he is playing his first AFL games as an inside mid. What exactly was the point of even trying him there if you are going to put a line through him after 2 games. Just the very idea of that is mind blowing that people actually think like this.

No. I dont agree. You have to have a plan to develop the talent on your list and that means you need to play players with potential to facilitate their growth. Its pretty straight forward and it applies to all codes of sports. We did it well with Milera last year and played him until he dropped off too far below the more established players that were waiting in the wings. Now we benefit for those games we put into Milera.

I hope Hampton succeeds but like us letting Kerridge and Lyons go, do you think GWS are concerned in the slightest in letting Hampton go infact both Kerridge and Lyons have probably been better at their new clubs , its a long shot he will succeed although the hype around him is insane

Hampton reminds me of Kerridge anmd Lyons in the fact he was happily traded is he not quite good enough

No. I think GWS will be quite happy. If I had a choice I probably wouldn't have done that deal in hindsight. But I am simply looking at our list. Our midfield, in particular our inside midfield, is our weakness. I know exactly what to expect if Thommo comes back in. I know what we are likely to get if Douglas is played there. More often like R2, with a few like R1. But I really dont know what the ceiling for Hampton is and I would like us to find out early in the season so that come finals we have the absolute best use of our list available to attack the flag. He showed enough in those 2 games that suggests there is a good midfielder in there. He needs to figure out why he is getting caught holding the ball so often and correct that, and he needs to find more of the ball. But those things seem to be realistic things that he can achieve.

I like Hampton but like CC last year hes not getting enough of the Pill, he needs to work out a way and quickly in getting more of it, CC has done this, will Hampton, the jury is out.

He is bery lucky we are winning because if we werent him and Kelly would have been cut by now.

He has been given an opportunity and did well in the JLT but now the real stuff has started he appears to be wanting.

This week will be a huge week for hampton and if he fails we may see a Wigg come in for him

Yeah, but you hit the nail on the head here. CC looked like he had the potential to do this and he was given games and now he is one of our greatest weapons. If Hampton is given a reasonable number of games then he might be a massive weapon that we can take into the finals. As I have said in many of my comments, I agree that he needs to rack up considerably more of the ball to keep his spot. But its a matter of giving him the opportunity now. We have already invested and we have seen signs that there is something good there. When Crouch comes back in we will have our top 3 mids sorted. But there is still 2 spots that last year were occupied by Lyons and Thommo. I think that we are trying to cover one of these spots with rotations - Laird, Cameron, Atkins, Knight. But the other position has to be a player that can do the inside work. Its between Douglas and Hampton. I thought Douglas was poor against the Hawks, whereas I thought Hampton was serviceable in both games. I wouldn't be dropping either until Crouch is ready to come back in, but when he is fit, he obviously comes straight in and lets see how Douglas and Hampton do until then.

The other player that I am hopeful will come in to contention is Greenwood. But time isn't on his side because team selection will naturally become more conservative as the season rolls on.

I hope Hampton is our carry player this year ie we can afford to carry him while he adjusts in the same way , as others have said, Cameron and McGovern were. With Mackay performing( fingers crossed) I think this is a good option

If we're basing it purely on performance then probably Milera would be first out of the team at the moment. If we had a long term approach in mind then Douglas or Mackay would probably be the one out.
Crouch has to win his spot back. These days very rare for all your best 22 to be available anyway.

Being so quiet as a senior mid is woeful. He better lift against Port.

If we're talking here about Dougy, what was with that free or mark on the wing.
I didn't have any audio but the hawk player started coming at him about 1 seconds after he stopped to take the kick. I was waiting for the umpire to give a fifty but Douglas ended up getting pinged HTB. It looked like another #freekickhawthorn moment or was Dougy just too slow?

I live in Sydney and the only way to define the game is call it AFL

That extends to junior footy , amateur footy etc etc

With 4 footy codes almost equally vying for attention you can't call it anything else and expect people to know what your talking about
.

Aussie rules.
Everyone knows what that is.

Well, let's wait for (a) Brad to get fit and (b) demonstrate form and fitness in the SANFL before we make a call. That's at least a month away, by which time we'll have a substantial form line to assess.

At the moment, Milera and Hampton would be in the discussion if Brad was fit and firing.

You do realise that Milera is averaging close to 20 possessions a game as an outside player and going at around 90% kicking efficiency ???

The kid is nowhere near being dropped this week or anytime soon

It's hard to know what the coaches want him to achieve at this stage but he's got a bad case of the Hendo's IMO.
I hope he toughens up a bit because that is one thing I can't stand.

Off the top of my head there's already Thommo v Hawks 2013 (hands in the back), the entire 2012 prelim, last year's final quarter v Hawks, yesterday's in the back... And that's only looking at Hawks games, there's almost a pattern there.
And don't forget Birchall's fractured jaw.

I thought the end of match handshakes between the teams were prolonged and genuine. Two teams that have had some close fights and share a mutual respect.

Wasn't suggesting otherwise but just that there were many hawks who stayed longer to shake Tex hand, they could have easily walked off.
