I'm actually sick of AFL coaches, all of them, saying I didn't see the incident when anything controversial happens.

I wish Nicks stood up for the club and said yeah where I was sitting it looked like a goal and the AFL need to be better in the goal review space as it may have cost us a chance to play finals.
Saying he didn't see the incident is a straight up lie and an insult to members that pay his salary

No guarantees we will unless we win these close ones. Improvement isn’t linear.

The positive from the night it probably removes an extension of Nick’s contract during the off season. If we have made finals, it would have been guaranteed
6 is a cursed number at the AFC....

I was expecting it to go down to the wire next Sunday and we miss out with GWS or Sydney winning a tight one.

However, the Footy Gods decided a howler of a goal umpire decision was more fitting.

We play Finals next year.

Still so disappointed we lost it like that. That win would have been massive for this young group, to come back by that much after playing so poorly in the first half and then almost seal a finals spot would have been huge. Especially after all the other close losses this year.

Fair enough if the umpire thought it hit the post, but to not call for a review when it was so close was a monumental error.

On the game.

Pedlar should have played the full game.

I am a big Thilthorpe fan. But he looked meek. This is a genuine concern.

Sog's best game.

We struggled with the wet.

Credit to Murphy. He played well.

That last quarter should have been the standard for the entire game.

Really making a play for the worst ball handling team in the comp to go along with the worst set shots at goal title, the handling errors (dropped marks, double/triple grabbing, fumbling) just totally unacceptable for an AFL team even in those bad weather conditions.

Really believe they need to look into their skills coaching development/training in the offseason, some players looked like they needed a pint of grippo on their hands to just hold on to the ball.

Single out Ben Keays for being the worst as soon as it gets slightly slippery/greasy he barely looks like he can pick up a ball let alone mark it in those conditions, I wouldn’t be surprised if he has naturally soft/slippery hands and that causes a lot of his issues even when it comes to his disposal, I know from personal experience I have shortish fingers and not very grippy hands and if I didn’t have at least some grippo on my hands I’d struggle a lot with my ball drop and my kicking suffered a lot.
Fumbling was horrendous. It wasn’t just the difficult takes either. Players would juggle simple handball receives.

I mean he said he couldn't see it from where he was sitting but that a close call like that should be reviewed. That's the correct thing to say, it's not letting the goal umpire off the hook. The big mistake is not getting the call wrong, that can happen, the big mistake is not using the available technology to check.
Spot on. The technology exists to get that decision right and should have been used.
A decision review would also have enabled the Crows to set up for a point decision. Meanwhile, Sydney tra-la-la-ed the ball out on the Western Grandstand side.
I haven't been to the Sydney Board but I'll bet their supporters loved it as payback for losing Dawson.
Nicks would look like an absolute fool if he went off about a decision and it turned out to be correct.
Gotta say, Nicks all ready looks like an absolute fool over the Sloane re-signing :poov1::madv1: and his selection ahead of Pedlar :sneaky:.

That comeback was brilliant. Sydney aren't a bad side at all, I wouldn't be surprised if they knock off the Dee's next week.

Only positive I see from the goal decision is it significantly moves us up the draft order.

Nicks and the team failed to come out swinging. But to their credit they turned it around and gave the swans a belting in the last.

Just add this game to the list of close games lost by a single kick, that next year I am confident our continued improvement will resolve. While ladder position doesn't reflect much change from last year, the deeper stats show Adelaide as the most improved team in 2023.

Side note to the circus.

Did McAdam get assessed? He seemed to be on the field after that shoulder to head collision that definitely was significant enough to warrant an HIA.

Crap by the club if he wasn’t.
On the radio they said that the doctor went out and assessed him while Tex (?) was lining up for a goal

Worst nightmare’: Possible AFL umpire error might have cost Crows a finals spot

The AFL could be facing its “worst nightmare”, after a possible error by a goal umpire was not reviewed in the final minutes of the Sydney and Adelaide game, a match which ended Adelaide’s finals hopes and could influence the final positions in the top eight.

Sydney beat Adelaide by one point at Adelaide Oval but with a little more than a minute left in the match, Crows midfielder Ben Keays appeared to have kicked the go-ahead goal, but the goal umpire said it hit the post.

The decision wasn’t referred to the “arc” score review system and play went on despite Keays and two teammates celebrating like they had scored a goal while Sydney moved the ball down the ground and went on to win the game.

Replays after the game appeared to show that the ball did not hit the post or the padding of the goal post, which commentators thought was possible at the time of the decision. The Swans’ win had major implications for the finals race as the loss ends Adelaide’s slim finals hopes and takes the Swans to 50 points and a likely spot in the finals – they still need to beat Melbourne in the final round to be sure of a place.

If Sydney had lost, St Kilda (52 points) would have been locked into the top eight and GWS Giants (48 points) would have remained ahead of the Swans going into the final round.

“This is the AFL’s worst nightmare,” Fox Footy commentator Cam Mooney said.

“On the eve of what has been one of the great finishes to a season, we’ve just got a big bungle.”

Swans coach John Longmire told journalists in Adelaide he hadn’t seen a replay of the Keays shot.

“Does it?” Longmire said looking surprised when told the replays appeared to show the ball hadn’t hit the post.

He also said his side did “a lot right” in the game leading by 32 points going into the last term.

When asked if he had discussed the Keays shot with the Swans players nearest to the post, he said no.

“No. We just talked about the last quarter in its entirety,” Longmire said.

“We went through those things, why they had a few scoring shots, there were a few things we didn’t get right.”

He didn't say that, just that he couldn't tell if it was a goal.
You reckon by the time the presser came around that Nicks didn't definitively know it was a goal?

The broadcast had it figured out a few minutes after the final siren at most.

He definitely knew and bullshitted

Pedlar can’t play a full game, he is absolutely gassed in the 2nd half if he starts. Did you see his shot on goal late last week? Couldn’t make the distance from 45, not something he struggles with when fresh. Needs another big pre season to build the fitness base (Rachele can join him too) and hopefully push to play at least 2/3rds of a game in the midfield in 2024.

The coaches do not get long before their presser, he would not have seen the million images that we all saw on platforms like Twitter. It was correct for him to say it should’ve been reviewed, that puts heat on the AFL. It’s been reported we contacted the AFL immediately afterwards anyway, so why does it matter what Nicks says? No point blasting them in public and then trying to negotiate behind the scenes.

He can't speak out of turn because this is a CEO level problem.... But saying Trust The System in a presser sets up the "we trusted the system and it's clearly broken, do something" from the Club.

I feel bad for Keays… that was his moment, he took it and did his job, but looks like an idiot due to Afl umpiring trash. He’s worked his arse off for close to a decade and has been denied his moment.
Yeah he won us the game but technically Rankine was the closest to the ball going over the line so isn't the rule that it was meant to go to him. I believe Rankine would have also won us the game.

He didn't say that, just that he couldn't tell if it was a goal.
He would have seen replays after the match. He would have been instructed to say that. It was fairly weak of him. I would have said it was a clear goal and the ump cost us the game. Is that statement incorrect?

We are now 6 years out of Finals since 2017.

We will play Finals next year.

I'm going to say no. Nicks was riding Tex's coattails this year and I don’t think it's reasonable to assume Walker will dominate again in 2024.

We blew a real opportunity this year and I blame Nicks for running our team into the ground with his shit selections.
