Firstly, the "No Kane Cornes" Rule is back

In 2005 we had hodge, Mitchell (rising star winner), Crawford (Brownlow, AA), Everett (AA), smith (AA), plus leaders like vandenberg to carry the performance load and set standards on and off the field (leave Everett out of that one!). And we barely one a game and finished second last. But in the process we had hodge breakout and get AA, mark Williams kicked 63 goals, Trent croad won AA, and we debuted three legends in buddy, roughy and Lewis. We simply don’t have those mature, high performing senior leaders on the list anymore so it is all going to have to come from the young players. It’s a dangerous and unproven road. It could turn out great but we are going to need players like Worpel and impey to give us a hell of a lot more then they have the past couple of years as there is literally no one else.
The other side of that is we didn’t know how good they were til they were put in that situation. 2005 was hodge, mitchell, brown and maybe Ladsons 4th year if I remember correctly. Sure we probably won’t win much next year, but we do have players there that can and will step up and I reckon we’ll be better for it in the long run.

If that's all we wanted from Tom and Jaeger you have to ask the question why weren't they traded out 12 months ago ?

I don’t think anyone was willing to offer anything for either. Only Breust and Wingard attracted deals and both opted to stay.

So you saying we wouldn't have got an offer equal to picks 41 and 50 for Mitchell last season after he got 20 odd brownlow votes ? Find that hard to believe.

JOM screwed us when he chose Freo. If it stayed with GWS, we would have smashed the deal.
In a way I don't blame him. Gets to go home and be with family and his missus.

Meek I'm happy with. 8 clubs enquired about him apparently.
Stephens will be a very good pick up.
We have Amon. Pick 6. And a potential trading of 3 picks to move up the order.

One thing is clear. Lloyd was right. Sam made up his mind that Tom and Jom had to go now. He had no intention of playing them in the middle next year. This is a full reset. Done his way.

Strap in for the ride.
If we made up our mind that JOM had to go now, why weren’t we working on this way earlier in the trade period or prior?

We got screwed by him choosing Freo because they didn’t even think JOM was an option until the GWS offer came late from nowhere last night and they had nothing to deal. We should have been all over a potential deal for him months ago and instead we had to scramble at the death.

Does your view change if we trade those late picks to Brisbane for 21?

Makes the trade look much better.
If we could do something like that it'd work out well, as I said I'm keen to see what we can do through the pick trading period. Still would have preferred a better return on Jaeger, shame he picked Freo really.

I have heard the hype around Harley Reid and watched his highlights last night. Wow. He looks v. good.

All year we have said we needed to change things up, and whilst JOM & Titch were in the fold, it was never going to happen.
Personally I am not a fan of Stephens - so I look fwd to that changing, but the main benefit with the trades is that with Titch & JOM gone, there is room for growth.

Meek is a big boy, so provided we don't trim him down, he's a PoD to our other listed ruckmen.

What we got is better than keeping Titch & JOM on the list again for another year. We truly are in another era now.
Agree. This is Sammy’s team now. It is all on him.

He was meant to crash and burn this year and he didn’t.

Time will tell what happens next but from my point of view the kids took over this year and now with the departure of JOM/Mitchell/Gunston it is their team. Let’s see what they’ve got.

And I hope Breust is getting paid a million.

Hopefully we can turn those later picks in to a points deal for someone to move up the order somewhere.

If we can do that, I’d call it a success overall. Dogs second will be late 20’s at a guess, and we’ve got Meek over for nothing.

Losing Titch and Jaeger stings, but if we waited they’d both be gone for nothing in 12 months anyway. Short term pain for long term gain, the club have identified where the list is at and is preparing for a long time at the top end of the ladder between 2025 and 2030.

I can imagine the reaction to Clarko’s clean out when he started was similar.

He had 2 years of salary to trade with back then and wasn’t coming up on being contracted. It’s not a comparable situation. However I don’t recall anyone being interested in him at all.

Not really, we killed the Hay, Thompson, Rawlings deals for first round picks.

Obviously the Croad deal was unpopular at the time, but we did land pick 1.

It is not fantasy football people… it is very easy to sit at a keyboard and say we got reamed or we should have improved on pick 6 but how? Name names as they say in the classics you can’t make a silk purse from a pigs ear..

Simple facts are 29 and 30 year olds are never going to get high draft picks unless they are superstars which alas neither Tom nor Jeager are.

You can only play the hand you are dealt, it is unrealistic to expect MM to win a massive trade victory. We are paying the price of trying to top up, its not fair to blame MM or Sammy for sins of the past.

At best.

I remember i wasn't a fan of the Hay or Thompson departures - both of which turned out great for us, but the one that frustrated me most was the delisting of Mark Graham - only to bring in Simon Beaumont!

Overall i am happy with what the club has done, ripping the band-aid off in a sense.
