Everyone (probably): Hawks should take risks
Hawthorn: Takes risks
Everyone: That’s s**t.

:(
I am unclear how we took risks. Take the emotion out, We didn’t improve our draft hand inside 30, despite the publicly stated strategy. we brought in a free agent good get but no risk, we brought in 2 players not playing at their respective clubs. We added 1 f2 pick which may sneak inside 30 depending on how dogs go. So the 10-12 picks inside 30 over 3 years strategy in years 1-2 is a total of 5 (6,6,23,24,26). I don’t see who who take our 40s picks to trade into the top 30 outside lions and dons. Unfortunately it seems we are going to smooth those 5 picks over an additional 2 years.

What ever happens we need to be on the phone to every kid that doesn’t get drafted that was meant to go in the first second round. So they can train with us over summer to get picked in the supp program and we should get a top 3 pick in the mid season draft where we do our best work.

Can we trade picks in the lead up or do they need to be done live on draft night?

Up to and on the night but we may get more on the night maybe.

Same with the pick 6 seeing Geelong have pick 7 and want that Geelong kid so they maybe want a trade on the night for a pick swap.

The melts on here are entertaining and way off the mark.

Both Amon & Stephens are really good pick ups and best 22 next year and Meek provides ruck support. All ticks.

Don’t care whose gone out they’re all has beens and no longer at the club. We lost nothing.

Bring on 2023.
Didn’t you say TOM and JOM were not going anywhere? Not sure your dumps match the cats…

Watch and see

Okay - so let’s pretend salary dumps are a known unknown then.

If this is the case and Gold Coast are a likely candidate for another one - how are we to know which players are eligible? Bowes contract was in the position it was because the Suns kept pushing his money owed back into the final years of his contract. We can’t know this was the case.

If we don't have people within our organisation who have built the types of relationships in the industry to obtain this kind of information then we need some new blood in the club

"but failing to get even a top-40 selection for two of their biggest stars hurts their rebuild as they need more top-end talent. You can’t rely on getting incredible late picks like Mitch Lewis forever."

"The Hawks have gotten something back for their veterans, although the cull has probably come a couple of years too late. And it means they’re a clear wooden spoon contender in 2023."

Do they actually stop and think about what theyre saying?
They're not saying a lot that isn't being said here, or by my Hawk friends to me in text.

We're a pretty****ing mopey bunch

This presumably applies to all 17 clubs that didn't get Bowes and pick 7?

Trade Doggies future 2nd & 41 for Essendon's 22
Trade 48+50+52+65 to Lions for 35

Take into the draft 6+22+24+35
Don’t you have to have open list spots for each pick you take to the draft? Are the lions planning to delist half the side? There’s no chance of trading up those useless picks 41 is the only good one which we must use to screw dodoro for Munkara.

If that’s our midfield next year we ain’t winning a game.

Don't get me wrong, I think we are guaranteed bottom 2.

But that sells Newcombe and Amon very short. Those two in particular will be delivering the ball from the stoppages to our forwards. Thankfully both are far better kicks than O'Meara and Mitchell.

You can also view the potential form of Ward, Moore, Worpel, Macdonald and Stephens as a positive due to their age and exposed form. I don't expect any of them to regress.

We might just be okay.

The teams with elite midfields will still tear us to shreds most likely however.

Yeah still think we could have just taken 25 or 27 Cooper is a risk so is the pick but starting from scratch rather than an injury plagued mid
That would have been my preference as well. As it could be a Burgoyne or an O'Rourke. But it is an ankle injury (and previously a non complicated broken leg) and not continued soft tissue. So hopefully it'll be a good outcome.

How many of those clubs could have absorbed $1.6 mil over two years?
That wasn't actually neccesary at all, was it? His renegotiated contract is a bit over $2M over 4 years.

Every club could have taken Bowes on his new contract.

I have heard elsewhere that our offer was financially the best.

Nope, it's just us that should have had the foresight that the Suns would be making an outrageous deal to dump the salary of a Gold Coast local who was never interested in leaving.

The negativity on this thread is similar to that expressed on match day threads throughout the season. I have often wondered if Hawthorn has more than it’s fair share of pessimists or whether it is representative of society in Australia.
Having seen my club win 13 premierships in my lifetime I take a positive long term view, as we have had plenty of mediocre seasons in that time also.
Win lose or draw I look forward to watching our young guys play over the next few seasons and view this trade period as a small step forward in our quest for premiership 14.

Think we’ll move pick ~50 & future 4th (Lions) to Brisbane for 2 x future 3rds

Next step is trying to do a deal with Essendon as they’ll probably need more points for Davey and they won’t be able to use pick 22… can we push from pick 6 up to 4 as part of this?

We could’ve got that deal done without paying a Brownlow medalist to play for a top four side for peanuts

You work for Geelong. What we're they offering to let go of Cooper for, to come to Hawthorn?
Seriously, I'm interested.
All these posters who tell us definitively what we could have done that we didn't.....it's truly phenomenal.

yes I did, based on my gut feel before a morning dump. I suggest you don’t rely on my gut feel before a morning dump to get through your day. I certainly don’t and I enjoy my morning dump.

I’ve recovered after last night.
Jaeger deal is fine. We left a lot on the table with Tom.
But it’s clear that we were happy for them to leave. Sam’s got his clean slate.

2023 will be ok with a fit squad at the start of the year, but if/when injuries bite and the slog of mid-season has set in, it could get ugly.
But plenty of space for players to develop quickly in The midfield and forward.
