Autopsy Hawks vs The Pusscats

I'm stating the obvious here, but judging by the celebrations after the McEvoy marks/ goals it would seem we have a plan to make him a key pillar up forward. Rough was genuinely pumped like a kid in the playground on a couple of occasions when big boy did good things.

I think they are. Their recruiting was very strange last year. They lost Christiansen and Motlop and replaced them with Ryse Stanley and Mitch Clark. And did this knowing that their midfield had been getting smashed all year already. They made no effort to fix their midfield except to get Cockatoo who will not come on til next year at least.

They are up to something down there.

If Johnson, Bartel, Kelly, Enright and maybe one other retire this year they are going to have one hell of a kity to play with.

they act like they have Danger next year

Here is a list of every Demons game James Frawley has been a part of where they won by a margin equal to or greater than the one on Monday:

Round 19, 2009
Round 5, 2010
Round 17, 2010
Round 4, 2011
Round 7, 2011
Round 13, 2011
Round 13, 2012

Most of them are against very green Gold Coast and GWS sides too.

Perhaps he'll have matched or surpassed this tally of 7 with us by the end of the season. Good start...

My *-supporting brother was telling me the other day about how * always play poorly against Melbourne. I'm really liking the prospect of Chip lining up against possibly the weakest KPF line the * have ever had knowing that he was likely a key part of butchering them over the last few years.

After round 1 I'd wager Dangerfield is thinking of staying with the Crows now and if there's still any considerations about leaving then Hawthorn would clearly have to be his choice if he truly is after success.

Saw this on the Cats board...

If the move clicks we'll be unstoppable.

Even at his best roughy doesn't take pack marks. Hale does it for the 30% of the game where he plays deep forward. But if we have McEvoy playing forward for more than half the game there will be some very nervous backlines that don't know where to focus their efforts.

Big Boy is certainly an exciting prospect as a forward for his pack marking ability. On the topic of marking, good to see us win the contested marking stat. A big weakness of ours just a few years ago.

big boy didn't get much of a look in last year. Just imagine if he shows the kind of improvement that gibbo, hale and gunston showed when coming across.

Ben McEvoy is being groomed to take over the David Hale role as that forward/second ruck. Big Boy did a lot of work with the forwards during the pre-season and one aspect of his game that was lacking in the past was his inability to push forward and kick goals. If he can work on that part of his game and kick goals regularly he will be a handy combination alongside Ceglar.

I suppose that the main contra to that was that he played as a ruck/defender at the Saints more out of Necessity than anything else....As that's where the ball was at more often than not!....Whereas, we have the luxury of playing him forward.

He has always been a solid around the ground mark, though this year, he seems to have dropped a few kilos & looks fitter than he's ever been!

Was pretty bored tonight so fast forwarded through my recording of the game to compile some stats on our centre clearance setups just for people's interest. Few of the percentages at the bottom of the page might be a little off as it's been a long day and I manually counted them up.

The letters at the end stand for Win, Draw and Loss. They may not match up with the official stats but I thought I'd include them anyway to give a bit more insight. I awarded a win for any clearance where we got a clearing kick from congestion, got it out into the hands of our players in general play or won a free kick before it left congestion. A draw for anything that resulted in a ball up before it left the initial congestion. A loss obviously where they got away with it instead.

Some points of interest:
- Very clear that Ceglar is our main ruck
- Rioli only in a handful of centre clearances but always the first of the quarter (except the last once Anderson was on)
- Burgoyne didn't go in there any where near as much as I felt he did
- Hodge was part of 75% of our clearance wins

McEvoy, Roughead & Gunston is a pretty scary prospect for any defense especially with Bruest, Rioli & Poppy at their feet. If anything our forwarline's ground level ability has become its' greatest weapon.

Even Ceglar has been clunking marks, I wonder if he & McEvoy are being instructed by Hale behind the scenes? Brilliant news for us since it means either resting ruckman is a threat. Ceglar may even become more damaging than McEvoy because he's so mobile, he can really work his way up to the wing and play the Gunston role while Jack drops back into defense when the opposition gets a run on, that way Roughy doesn't have to and can conserve his tank.

Its often the case when the team has minimal injuries, but we are looking scarily well-balanced right now. My only slight concern aside from KPP depth which can never really be enough, is our ability to cover small forwards. That said I don't think a defensive stopper like Nick Smith would really fit within the current team since Clarko is demanding pretty much everyone but Lake has a strong offensive mindset. Also, we have Stratton who's done some very good jobs in the past.

Key is to keep winning so we can afford to give guys like Hodge, Mitchell & Burgoyne the occasional week off to keep them fresh for the real stuff.

Unbelievable bit of play. Had me out of the couch :D

Listening to the Hawks in the media today it appears Burgoyne may be the most admired by the playing group. Gunston was asked who was the most irreplaceable player on the list and he nominated Hodge and Burgoyne. Then McEvoy said Burgers is probably the best player he has every played with in his career.

Watching from the stands across to the other side of the field it's not immediately obvious who our rucks are in general play without them standing straight next to a smaller midfielder. Their kicking action isn't terribly awkward like most ruckman and they're quite good when the ball is on the ground too which by itself is a marvel to behold. They're pretty much slow, 200cm midfielders rather than your typical, lumbering ruck who is basically a liability outside of ruck contests and the odd pack marking contest.

He's a behemoth, we all see it, but not many outside the club realise how good he really is.

It's pretty funny

Can't bring myself to send it to my Cats mates though

You guys haven't gone of the cliff yet - just round 1
It's great. Posted it in reaction to all the queens of the drama wanting to tear the place down after one loss. A pretty nasty loss but still a single loss.

Agreed. I thought that was a great look.

I would think it may be undertaken for every home team at the MCG.

However the thought of the MCG in red and black for Sunday is making me feel a bit queasy ...

If we could just sneak oogac into the media room beforehand, I'm sure he could make some adjustments to the "theme".

After the game my mate said there were no positives. I suggested three: Mitch Clark, learning experience for Cockatoo and that there were no consolation goals to paper over the cracks

Think the Cats fans all need to watch the replay. Cats didn't seem as bad the second time round.

I've still got Geelong in the top 6
