I don't care if he makes AA for the next five years, I just don't think getting SB was a good idea.

Sure we needed a ready made player, but is it worth missing out on a 10 year player like Lewis Jetta or Kane Lucas?

Lucas is practically ready made, and even Jetta is getting enough of the ball to suggest we should've picked him. Plus we need his speed.

Discuss.

You should take a big breath before making such a rash statement.

Burgoyne is a great acquisition to the Hawks that will give us wonderful service for the next 5 years or so while the Premiership window is open

Stupid thread, especially when you say you dont care if he gets AA for next 5 years. That makes no sense at all. We have givin up very little if you think about it. Pick 9, The players around 9 were (Sheppard, Gysberts, Moore, Lucas, Melksham) and Mark Williams which, i know has given us great service over the years but is way past it and his effort this season at the bombers has been deplorable. I think if he had been with us this season he probably wouldnt have gotten many games, so to get a 1st round pick for him is a great win. I think we have been the real winners out of this trade

If you seriously think that Burgoyne hasn't contributed greatly to our last 10 weeks, then you are kidding yourself. He's a gun and from what he's already shown and will continue to grow in his role. If however, you are upset about yesterday's result, you need to take a deep breath and think before posting these kinds of threads.

This isn't because of yesterday's result, and I acknowledge Burgoyne's contribution. Just think that we'd be better served with Pick 9.

PICK 9!!!

Yeah, cause early draft picks have served us well in the past.

Come on HP, we all now the draft is a lucky dip at the best of times. Burgoyne is a proven gun. You DON'T pass on a proven gun ahead of an unknown kid.

I will say this once more, and hopefully for the final time. We did NOT actively recruit Burgoyne. FACT: Burgoyne approached the club, told them he wanted to leave Port, and said he would really want to play for the Hawks as his preferred option. It was personal, not financially motivated.

When one of the best midfielders in the competition does this, you then see whatever you can do to to accomodate him.

I am normally not too welcoming of players mid-20s or over wanting to leave their clubs, but the circumstances here were entirely different, I won't go into them. Had the club knocked him back, THAT would have been a mistake.

Where a player goes in the draft means SFA mate. Thorp, Dowler are two examples from our club, both high draft picks with alot of potential, one is no longer with the club and the other seems to be struggling. I can't pass much judgement on Dowler this year, as I haven't followed Box Hill at all this year.

Potential good player with pick 9?

Or ready to go gun who has added more class to our midfield and has had a major hand in helping us turn this year around?

I'd take Shaun Burgoyne every time.

I agree with Hodgepodge here, but to much more of an extent. We could have gotten pick 45 instead of gibson. Disgraceful recruiting by Hawthorn, and I doubt we will ever be up to the standards of Carlton and Essendon when 2015 finally comes around.

Spot on, Hawks 1523.

Ludicrous suggestion from HP. Burgoyne's cameos early on in our winning streak and then his more sustained performances since he's been fit have been excellent.

Only one of our first draft picks in the last 5 years are in our Top 10 players (Rioli). Ellis is in our Best 22, but the others are nowhere. Burgoyne has clearly been in our best 10 players since coming back and looks fit and will only improve with time and another pre-season, despite his age. Farcical to suggest that (on average) a 20% shot is worth what has proved to be a wise drafting/trading decision.

Surely you're taking the p155.

Acquiring Burgoyne was the right decision for the now....with the team we have, we have alot of stars with very little depth, thanks to the massive draft blunders of 2005 and 2006." Pelchen you have alot to answer for" If we didn't acquire Burgoyne we would have wasted the likes of Franklin Mitchell Hodge Roughead Bateman etc.

On what evidence is either of those two a ten year player? Or Butcher, Moore, et al.

One loss is enough to scare the horse it seems....

Look, I hope this explanation/overview will end this thread, because I find it incredibly shortsighted.

The simple view is to say 'aww - we gave up pick nine for Burgoyne - we missed out on a great kid'.

The truth of the matter is we picked up 3 great kids that were bottom agers the season before, effectively taking at least one top ten pick of 2009 (in Shiels) a year early.

We had credits in the bank, so as to speak, that allowed us to top up.

In years to come people will look back at this, combined with the way we exploited the NSW & NZ scholarship schemes, as the cornerstones on which the Hawks of the 2010's were built.
