I don't think we should've got Burgoyne. (again)

I don't care if he makes AA for the next five years, I just don't think getting SB was a good idea.

Sure we needed a ready made player, but is it worth missing out on a 10 year player like Lewis Jetta or Kane Lucas?

Lucas is practically ready made, and even Jetta is getting enough of the ball to suggest we should've picked him. Plus we need his speed.

Discuss.

Y would u even create this thread?
U gotta be joking Burgers has been great to have at Hawthorn!

Lol

HP is pissed as all of us are about yesterdays performance, so he's thrown in a hand-grenade troll, problem is...its on the Hawks board HP!!!

thanks for the laugh mate!!

My issue is not that we got him, but we gave up too much.

Really?

Willo's time was drawing to a close at Hawthorn. I'm surprised Ian Robson thought it a good decision to offer Willo a three-year contract and I'm not surprised Willo jumped at it. Willo's body is crocked and I wouldn't be surprised if he barely plays in the third year of his contract.

A player of Burgoyne's quality will always require at least a first round draft pick to exchange hands, unless the club he's going to has the first pick in the PSD, which Hawthorn didn't have.

We facilitated Willo setting himself up for life courtesy of the Bombers, landed an elite midfielder and gave up a first round pick for it.

I don't know anything about the players taken with pick 9 or around that pick, but I suspect that St Kilda has come out the worse of the entire inter-connected trades, giving up pick 16 for a player they later sacked due to off-field issues.

Would you have preferred if we had given up pick 9 + Schoenmakers, pick 9 + Lewis or pick 9 + Brown in exchange for Burgoyne? Port Adelaide requested all those deals at one point or another during trade week.

This isn't because of yesterday's result, and I acknowledge Burgoyne's contribution. Just think that we'd be better served with Pick 9.

PICK 9!!!

HodgePodge makes some good points.....Good Call Bad Call LMR?

BAD CALL HodgePodge

Burger is crucial to hawthorn moving forward. Dont judge a player that hasnt participated in a pre season in 3 years. Judge him next season when he has completed a pre season.

His little gives and body work in traffic is outstanding for a player that has had next to no preparation.

Also imagine how good his clearance work will be if we could ever get a ruck that hits in our direction and doesnt jump 30 seconds before he should:eek:

Hodge, Mitch, Lewis and Sewell are all plodders. Burger is the man that will be able to get it clear for the likes of Young, Rioli and Bateman to get free.

Pick 9 means absolutely nothing and is all guess work anyway.

Dowler Thorp and Xavier Ellis all picks inside 6 in the National Draft have proved that dominating that under age level can mean diddly squat.

You're seeing a Burgoyne with no pre-season. Wait until 2011 when he has a solid pre-season behind him. He is a game breaker.
Shaun has many preseasons under his belt. Our fitness and conditioning staff put him through a long program before he played any football, and he's built up from there.

Missing one preseason is not ideal, but if it was 2 or 3 in a row I'd be more concerned.

I thought he was very handy yesterday, and his games prior to that have been top notch.

While we have hodge buddy Cyril Mitchell and co on the list at the same time the premiership window is open. Very rare to top up at the top end so a great pickup to sustain our challenge. We lost crawf And dew as well who were top level players so makes perfect sense to replace them w ready made rather than youngsters. Think how we would feel if burger had gone to saints geelong dogs or pies.

OK Hp - you have the rest of this thread to say what you would have done with pick 9.

Plus you have HINDSIGHT;)

Sorry HP, strongly disagree with you.

Burgoyne has been brilliant and is giving us more than I was expecting after just 10 or so games.

Can't agree HP. Burgoyne brings great poise and leadership to the team apart from the obvious silky skills. I'm sure his recruitment was partly in response to losing experienced leaders like Crawf, Croady, Dew and Campbell recently and is paying dividends now.......he has played a big part in our recent resurgence.

A recent example of his leadership was when he stopped Ellis from passing the footy on after taking a mark inside 50 early in the game against Port. The set shot resulted in a goal!

Totally ,completely absolutely thoroughly WRONG. He's gold.

Nice fishing post HP, certainly got a few nibbles & we needed a chuckle :)
Now on the off chance that it was a serious question....oh wait.....

Burgers has been fantastic not just on-field for us but for his leadership qualities. Here is hoping he can continue playing well and lead by example through the finals series.

Burgoyne is/will be a great acquisition.

We have the current FWD power of Franklin and Roughead at our disposal, and to increase supply to them we needed more MF depth to compete with the likes of Geelong, Collingwood et al.

Highly speculative we'd obtain that immediate depth from some inexperienced teenager in the draft.

WTF is this a joke thread or serious? we gave up nothing for burgoyne anyways Melksham looks arlight tries hard but will never be elite and Pittard well that speaks for itself plus Kane Lucas he cnt even play without tearing a hammy and Jetta cnt kick a goal well worth the trade plys savage, shiels, langford if we get him and stubbs NSW selection look great aswell there the future anyways burgoyne will take up a role like crawf in 07 and 08 one we need badly for leadership for a guy hu has won a flag he is well worth it weve got young talent and players in the rpime which makes burgoyne ever moore handy. A teamwith franklin, hodge, mitchell, rioli, burgoyne can cause damage in any finals series plus with stratton and schoey developing well we can be a premiership threat for the next 5 years anyways

Not sure why you are introducing a whole lot of un-related trades?

I think Burgoiyne was worth pick 9, but not with a second round pick.

He's a quality player but his best was a few years ago and he came injured, so there is and remains a risk that he will never get back to his AA form.

Speaking of unrelated trades, what second round pick?

We gave up Pick 9 and Williams in that trade.

It pisses me off at how little respect this guy gets on bigfooty, if someone mentions a bad word about schonmakers, shiels etc the world collapses but the amount of posters slagging of Xavier is outrageous.. Xavier is 22, he has dominated in the one grand final he is played and he played quite well in the preliminary final as well. The things this kid does go un-noticed he actually thinks through situations so well, the goal by Roughead to put us 12 points in front in the last 5 mins against st kilda was orchestrated by xavier. Yes his he can butcher a kick at times but he goes in hard, he thinks through everything and he is going to be a super player

agree 100%

i really dont understand the X bashing, he was one of our best yesterday IMO and has had a pretty solid year, yet every week people are calling for him to be dropped.

I seriously think his appearance plays against him.

Together with being an unassuming young man, he's pale, red headed & skinny and is not most supporters idea of the quintessential AFL player.

Possibly.

I think the fact that he hasn't improved as much as we all expected has something to do with it. Also being a pick 3.

He looks fantastic at training, might take another year before he consistently has big impacts on games.

He'll be a star. :thumbsu:
