Article on Alex Morgan from his draft year:

The Chargers now believe he could be their first player picked at Tuesday’s national draft and Champion Data rated Morgan’s Vic Metro games elite for contested possessions, intercept possessions and SuperCoach points.

Morgan returned from a torn hamstring to play in this year’s grand final and new talent boss Craig Notman said after a cold start he was the “catalyst” for the premiership, drifting forward to take a clean mark and kick a clutch goal.

“He’s a terrific kid,” Notman said.

“He’s like a 21-year-old in a maturity sense, but like a 17-year-old in a footy sense because he missed last year and a chunk of this year.”

Then came draft combine.

Off a limited preparation, Morgan registered the quickest 20m sprint time and finished second in the agility and vertical jumping tests.

“I didn’t think I was that fast, but I looked up at the scoreboard and everyone started clapping,” he said.

“My strengths are my decision-making mixed in with my speed and skills.

“I think I have the ability to kind of slow down play and pick the best option when other people would panic.”

Drafted pick 29 in 2015. Looks great in the vid above.

Alex Morgan looks as though he has gone backwards since being drafted. Has hardly even fired a shot at VFL in two years
Recurring hamstring injuries can do that to you though, its really hard to play good footy without faith that your body will hold up. If he gets that right he has a heap of talent, and didn't have too much trouble finding the footy at underage level which seemed to be his problem in the VFL.

No thanks

I know you haven't picked him up yet, but if you do... What's the thinking behind getting rid of Mullet to bring in a lesser performed half back in Morgan? Mullet up to no good behind the scenes?

I assume their thinking is along the lines of Mullet whilst solid enough has had his chances with us over a number of years and is never going to take that next step.

Morgan we perhaps liked in his draft year and whilst he hasnt shown much in his 2 seasons is younger, potentially has a higher ceiling than Mullet and would cost less in terms of TPP.

His last game for us in the VFL was by far his best.

Reckon we would have kept him for another season if we had not picked up Saad who will play the same role.

If you can get him right his pace is a real weapon and unlike the Hartungs, Impeys and Colyers of the world he seems to be able to slow for the split second before kicking so he does not spray it.

I think he is worth a punt instead of your last pick in this draft.

^ I agree, I think he's worth the punt with one of our throw-away selections. I suspect other clubs think the same, so he might be gone already.
I'd have no issues taking him. He's basically an unknown quantity and there is the slight chance he turns out ok.

I'll take that over a Hartung type who has proven over a large sample size that he is no good.

That's the basis of my view. Don't want Hartung as we know he's limited. Morgan had big wraps on him, but it hasn't worked out in his 2 years in the system, at least partly as a result of injury. Low risk punt.

To go with his 2.88 20m, Morgan run a 8.07 in the agility test which is very quick. Is a good kick but doesn't get it enough for my liking.

Played a over age kid in his draft year. Turns 22 in Jan, a month younger than Turner and older than all our 2014 draftees excluding Preuss.

Maybe last spot on the list (as a delisted FA or Preseason) or rookie list.

This time last year everyone paying out on Marley.

Nekminit.

I know what you mean but Marley Williams had played good standard AFL football previously.

I suspect a few clubs will wait and see how the draft unfolds as opposed to signing him as a DFA prior to the main draft.
