I wonder if it's just a fitness thing, he's clearly covering more ground now, when it comes time to have a set shot he might just be pooped. Although he did have the first set shot against North within the first minute so that throws off that theory.

What is hard to work out why so many beautiful field kicks like Bont and Marra have trouble with a set shot at goal. To hit a smaller target like your team mate from 30 to 40 metres away would think be harder than kicking it through the goals from a set shot.

Why is it so maybe need to call

The most obvious thing to me is in the head and I liken to when I play golf. The long putt you are trying to put in the hole but anywhere close is acceptable so no pressure. The shorter putts you feel the pressure because you expect it to go in the hole and if you miss it, it is a failure.

The other most obvious reason is more often than not a field kick to a team mate is taken on the run and not kicked on 0ver man on the mark.

I guess they are to different skills even though both require accurate kicking skills and like anything to improve you need practice and good coaching the more confident you are the less negative thoughts creep into your head.
Do they not pick out a person in the crowd between the big sticks and imagine/visualise that that person in the crowd is their team mate? Maybe they do, but they they pick out someone who is out of bounds or between the point posts. Seems like a fairly simple adjustment at the end of the day.

Wouldn't work for certain turnover merchants on our list. (* cough * McComb * cough *)

That’s a bad cough you have 🙄. Why single out McComb? He hasn’t played for months and rarely takes set shots.

No problem. Substitute your preferred player. There's a few to choose from!

Yeah, misses all round not just late in games. It’s something that can be improved.

Rather him float 80-90 metres out and be the link. He’s too good in the air to be taken by a back flanker and had logue on toast because he moves too well for players that size

Marra has been brilliant the last few weeks. His leading and forward craft is elite. Just needs to get his goal kicking boots on and he will be unstoppable.

I doubt it because his field kicking late in games is still deadly, which shows he is still capable of executing kicking skill under fatigue.

Really thinks is a ball drop and timing issue. Like most players his set shot kicking is slower more controlled run up kicking action which is a less natural kick than field kicking. You would think kicking the ball accurately is one skill set but obviously accurate field kicking and goal kicking require a different or additional skill set which includes the mental aspect. The more skilled you become improves confidence and takes away/reduces the mental demons.

The weirdest thing about the misses is that they all tend to come from the most favourable side for a left footer.

JUH and Bont and Naughton should all be taking set shots blindfolded. Or maybe borrow Caleb's helmet and wear it backwards.
("Use the force" style like OWK training Luke on the MilFalcon. That abbreviation nearly ended up meaning something else!)

Couldn't do any worse!

Then Bevo will say “you’ve taken your first step into a larger world”

Yes totally mental. If you go through a proper normal kicking approach it is very Tai chi like in its grace and fluidity. These guys can kick 9 out of 10 down at the local park. As soon as you have 40,000 in the stands and hundreds of thousands watching on tv with the pressure of the moment, one flutter, half a negative thought, tenses one muscle we’ve never heard of in the body and changes the whole ball drop and step through, then they start ‘hoping’ it goes in, then they’re completely gone. This need practice physically and especially mentally and emotionally.

This is my thinking also at this point in the season. He'll turn his set shot yips around I'm quite certain, but in the meantime, rather than dig the same hole deeper, play him either as a high half forward or on the wing and let him be part of the chain to scoring. He's an excellent mark, field kick and has vision. He's also added a nice bit of aggression and heavy hitting to his game and is aerobically much improved.

On the very edge of being an all out star. Hoping he gets there by September.....this year🤞

Anyone else see that when the siren went after Marra marked it he swore and dropped his head? (I think it was a mark, my memory of games is poor).

Really feel for him.

Was at the opposite side of the ground from me so didn’t see (presume you’re talking about end of the North game?)

There was absolutely no pressure on that kick though - game over, win in the bank, simple kick to bump up the score, yet was a bad miss.

He’s obviously an enormous talent, but this is getting to be a significant issue. Hope he gets the support he needs, whatever that may be, and sorts it out. He’ll win games off his own boot once he does.

Yep norf game. Clear vision of it on the coverage.

Yeah, Hannan went up to him for a chat and patted him on the head. Clearly getting to him.
