Because 23 alone sliding to 25-26 isn't going to get it done most likely. The guy finished top 3 in B&F, had a break out year & is in the sweet spot age profile. Very unlikely to get him for that. If the situation was reversed do you think we'd be ok giving him up for that?
what did we get for Charlie Cameron a better player than Dawson....peanuts . Pick 23 is plenty for a player most of the country didn't even know. Also Keays was 2nd in Band F and is 24. Does that mean he automatically warrants a top 20 pick?.....Have a look back at what we got for Keath and Greenwood, both of them got 4 year contracts north of 500k. That is what we accepted for payers we wanted but could not afford to keep
dont know that I’d class pick 12 as “peanuts”..what did we get for Charlie Cameron a better player than Dawson....peanuts . Pick 23 is plenty for a player most of the country didn't even know. Also Keays was 2nd in Band F and is 24. Does that mean he automatically warrants a top 20 pick?.....
Its slower if you drive along the Coorong
Cameron was in contract from memory, Dawson isn't. Dawson plays a different role to Cameron. Dawson is coming in with a better year under his belt than when Cameron lect. Cameron became a better player after he left. I think Dawson is worth around a late first. I think we will push for 23 and likely end up doing 23, 37 with possibly a 3rd back.what did we get for Charlie Cameron a better player than Dawson....peanuts . I recall that you didn't believe that we had interest in Dawson at the beginning of the year....I think the really interesting thing is we went fishing for a nice, complementary piece at the start of the year. Nothing too high end.
and then he blew up, and it turns out we’ve moved from the Toyota showroom to the Mercedes sport section
it wasnt actually the plan. The fish grew bigger after we threw out the bait
nice problem to have, but not without its challenges
the trade will cost more, the contract has cost more, and there is list management implications

Seems thart ou have now changed your position on that?

Cameron had an up and down year in 2017.. if my memory serves me correct I think he even got dropped back to the sanfl for a few games…
Cameron was a bit different in that he was also contracted though..
hard to really compare the pair… different circumstances.
Cameron had a fantastic year in 2017 playing 24 of a possible 25 games. The difference in his numbers between his 2017 season with us and his form at Brisbane is purely the role he played at each club.
In 2017 he played as our 5th option as a forward behind Tex, Betts, Jenkins and Lynch. His primary role was to be a pest inside the 50 and keep the ball locked in as represented by his 103 tackles for the year. His 29 Goals were a bonus.
When he moved to Brisbane - he became the focal point of that forward line being Brisbanes leading goal kicker in all 3 of the last seasons.
2019 -24 games 57 goals, 32 behinds - 49 tackles
2020 - 19 games 31 goals, 22 behinds - 42 tackles
2021 - 24 games 55 goals, 33 behinds - 53 tackles
Side note - In my opinion its no coincidence that Brisbane have finished top 4 the last three years yet have a finals record of 1-5 (5 home finals and 1 neutral ground final). If the focal point of your attack is a 180cm speedster, it's a system that just isn't built to win finals.
I wouldn't go so far as to call it "fantastic". He had an amazing Prelim Final, but prior to that his form for weeks had been so bad that many (including me) were calling for him to be dropped.Cameron had a fantastic year in 2017 playing 24 of a possible 25 games. Back then the definitive CC play was this:
CC obviously had talent, and genuine AFL weapons - particularly his speed and defensive pressure. He was also incredibly inconsistent, and frustrating with his ability to follow the sublime with the ridiculous, usually within the same passage of play.
- win a contested ball on the wing,
- light the afterburners and easily pull away from his chasing opponent,
- enter the F50 and have a "what now?" moment - pass to a teammate, or kick for goal?
- if he kicked for goal he would miss and score a behind,
- if he tried to pass he would hit his teammate's opponent on the tit - 10m from his intended target
- turnover
It's a credit to CC that he has become the player he has, but let's not kid ourselves - we made out like bandits when David Noble agreed to hand over pick #12 for the player that CC was back then.
Would make a huge difference to the side1 thing's for sure, we desperately need to find another Cameron type player.

At the time, pick 12 was high for what Cameron had shown. We were all very happy with that (despite not wanting him to go).
In hindsight, pick 12 was a great trade for Brisbane. Cameron continued his upward trajectory and became an elite player.
Ultimately then, you would say pick 12 was a very even trade and worked well for both clubs.
He was really good in the first 10 rounds, kicking 2+ goals in 6 of the first 10 games (18 goals in total from R1-10). After that, he fell away badly. He only managed 6 goals in the 11 games from R11-23 (he missed one game). By the end of the SF, he'd kicked a grand total of 1 goal in his last 5 games. If the measure of a players season not being fantastic is that a bunch of big footy nuffies (including you) were calling for him to be dropped - I don't know what to tell ya.
Not sure what else you would expect from the clubs 5th best forward In 2017 to go alongside his 29 goals:
2nd at the club for Inside 50's
4th at the club for tackles (3rd for tackles Inside 50)
3rd for goal assists
Kid was damn good.

His form from R11-SF was easily bad enough to justify being dropped - but the coaches stuck by him. He rewarded their faith, by kicking 5 goals in the PF - a performance which seemingly came from nowhere.
... and 4 of those 5 I50s resulted directly in a turnover. That was the whole problem - he stopped scoring himself, but the turnovers continued.I guess that's the difference of opinion.
I don't think he was in the 2017 side to kick goals. Thats why we had Walker, Betts, Jenkins and to a lesser extent Lynch.
Those last 5 games he averaged over 4 tackles a game and 5 inside 50's per game. Was always a key part of our side.

His defensive pressure was great, but once the goals dried up he was little more than a faster version of Petrenko.
Pick 18 was the initial offer. Reid held out and got pick 12 which we selected Fogarty with.At the time pick 12 seemed about right for Cameron.
With the benefit of hindsight - Brisbane massively won that trade.
There had to be some collusion there (with us and Noble at Brisbane) as SOS would have demanded picks 10 and 12(if we had it) for Gibbs. That we got the Gibbs deal done for 10 & 16, then shortly after when most of the media was spruiking pick 19 for Cameron, Noble does us a big favor and we get pick 12 for him and we took Fogarty with that pick in the draftPick 18 was the initial offer. Reid held out and got pick 12 which we selected Fogarty with.
Brisbane have done well, and i think Fogarty will prove to be a quality selection at that pick.
