Cats cautious on Kelly

James Kelly will not play against West Coast on Saturday

GEELONG appears set to make further changes to its side ahead of the final home and away match of the season as coach Mark Thompson enforces a strict ‘no risk’ policy with his stars.

That means James Kelly is racing the clock to be fit for the Cats’ first final after Thompson confirmed the silky-smooth midfielder would miss another week with a quad injury.

While Thompson insisted Kelly would only miss this week’s round 22 clash with West Coast, the fact he has already been ruled out must place him in some doubt for Geelong’s qualifying final the following week.

“Kel will probably miss another week, we found out yesterday,” Thompson said at Skilled Stadium on Tuesday morning.

Kelly was a late withdrawal from the Cats’ side that beat North Melbourne on Sunday.

The coach said he was unsure whether small forward Mathew Stokes – also a late withdrawal against the Kangaroos – would be fit to take on the Eagles at Skilled Stadium on Saturday but Ryan Gamble was “more than likely” to play.

Max Rooke is a certain absentee after accepting a one week ban for engaging in rough conduct.

However the biggest surprise could be the return of young forward Tom Hawkins, the man many believed had played his last senior match for the year a few weeks ago as a foot injury threatened his season.

But Hawkins' six-goal effort for Geelong's VFL side on the weekend has thrust his name back into senior calculations.

“He’s name will no doubt be mentioned at selection,” Thompson said.

David Wojcinski is also a possible inclusion with Thompson declaring the speedster a chance to return, however the Cats will carefully manage their list and won’t play anyone not at full fitness.

“We’ll just do what we do every week and blokes that are fit to play, they’ll play,” Thompson said.

“If they’re a little bit sore we’ll make a decision whether they can play or not.”

One luxury Geelong won’t have this season is its VFL side also playing throughout the finals.

The Cats’ reserves are set to miss the finals in the state competition, meaning after this weekend whoever isn’t playing senior footy but still hoping to come into the Cats line-up will be missing valuable match practice.

“Obviously we’ll keep all the guys who we would consider a chance to get a game around the club and keep enough numbers so that we can perform training at the required level," Thompson said.

“There’d be some guys who’ll probably be released and told to take their break so we can get them back early and chuck them back in the gym, but we haven’t really worked out names or numbers yet.”

i would love to see the tommahawk play finals as he missed last year. at the same time i really hope lonners gets a game too. Hard to see them both up forward when we have mooney up there as well.
Lonergan can play down back as well and he would probably get the nod over hawkins for finals i think.

Thompson quoted in the Ablettiser:

"But we're pretty happy with the way Tommy Lonergan is playing".

I'm tipping that we will see Tommy L on GF day.

The Tomahawk still has 10 years and plenty of finals left in him.

Sure, Bring Hawkins back this week but i'm cautioius about having to rely on him come finals. I haven't seen much of him this year though.

To you guys that have followed his progress in the 2's - can we realisticly count on him stepping up to the big stage so to speak?

The only way I can see Hawkins getting a run is if Taylor is rested and Lonners given a run in the backline. Gives us a chance to experiment before the finals without Lonners losing confidence about his place in the side.

he wasnt seen as playing well earlier in the season when the team as a whole wasnt playing well.

lonergan came into the side at the start of a purple patch and has been able to keep his place.

if the fortunes had been the opposite and lonergan played during the tough stretch would he be in the team now?

it is interesting that hawkins was the lead up forward when he was in the team, but when he went out mooney took on more that role and lonergan stayed closer to goal. just my observation.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there are no bottom 8 sides in the finals. So lonergan wont be kicking any goals come september.
Big shame that.

Kicked 5 at AAMI against Crows, 3 away V Swans, 3 V Tiges, but you may be correct. Hope he gets a couple early to fire up his confidence.

And Hawkins has? He has only managed his bags of goals against Melbourne and Carlton, at least Lonergan has been able to kick goals against the better quality bottom 8 sides!!! This forum has a ridiculous love of the Tomahawk, like a reverse version of the Shannon Byrnes feelings. Hawkins had 10 games, more than Prismall got to prove himself. Hawkins had his chance for the season, and than some, Lonergan has come in and performed.
Don't get me wrong, I like the Tomahawk and he will be a dominating forward at Geelong for hopefully the next 10 years. But he doesn't deserve a call-up again this season.

they will not alter the structure that is sort of working
need a lift from johno and stokes

gamble will not be there in the gf, might play his last game this weekend

I just think that when it comes down to the crunch that the tomohawk is going to provide more than lonners, thats all.

I agree with you most times foreskin. I guess that gets me in the top 5 negative posters of this forum.

For the record, i hate Byrnes and would take Hawk ahead of Lonners in the finals.

Oh yeah, and i think we should sack Bomber :D
