Hey KM, just wondering if there are any players from the State Combine invite list that you think could be good AFL players?

Good question.

And by good I'll take that as able to at least have the chance to get games at AFL level or better.

Nick Dodge from Tasmania as a small forward has the production and talent to have a shot at finding a role on a team list.

Darcy Cameron as a ruckman stands out to me. He has lacked some opportunities to get regular ruck minutes but when he has, he has really managed some big hitout totals. Physically well developed and also able forward of centre. As a rookie worth a look to me.

From SA Jayden Brind interests me. Big body and needs to shed some weight and improve his pace, but he can win the footy, take some marks in the front half and hit the scoreboard so if he can change his body he has a shot.

From Victoria I have a few further names. Kade Answerth as a small mid is highly productive and could be a component to a midfield. Tom Phillips as an outside type is highly productive and has a non-spectacular but still good game. Mitch Brown (ex Geelong) is worth a shot. Nick Coughlan as a key defender has improved well this season and performed strongly so he may be able to take that next step. Michael Hartley as a key defender is much improved and I feel can find a role for himself at AFL level.

In terms of who I'd draft. Hartley, Coughlan and Cameron are the three I most like if you ask me today as those most likely at AFL level to find a role.

And Bendigo boys invited to the State combine, Tardew, Hore and Burke, looking like slim rookie chances at best?

As state combine invites all plausible with at least a couple of clubs considering those boys but most likely overlooked with clubs in the most part likely to minimise the numbers taken in this draft which will make it hard for most of those only invited to the state screenings.

Given it's been a few weeks since my last power rankings update I felt today was as good a time as any to provide a quick power rankings update.
Damn you have the 2 player's I want the eagles to get at 7 and 8 in your power rankings now.if we don't trade our first pick they might not be there

Clarke may not go inside the first 25 selected on draft day and probably goes somewhere in the 20s based from what I can gather from media rumours, and Oliver I don't have a clear feel as to where he lands with the media people also not talking about his likely draft position but he could rise into the 15-20 range is my best guess.

So there is still hope.

Clarke and Oliver are just among my personal favourites this year. That's all.

Who were your personal favorites from last year that didn't go anywhere near as high as you would have picked them?

Reece McKenzie (6 in my power rankings - went in the 70s to Richmond), Connor Blakely (7 in my power rankings - went early 30s to Fremantle), Oscar McDonald (23 in my power rankings - went late draft to Melbourne), Dean Gore (26 in my power rankings - went late draft to Geelong)

any chance of ryan burton being available at an early second round pick and also is he returning to football from his injury soon?

It's plausible. I still see him most likely going first round, but that medical evaluation could certainly change things depending on what the docs report.

In terms of when he returns. I imagine he will be ready for next season given how long he has been out or if not then early season. But have not heard official word so I'd recommend listening out for reports as that is just my guess rather than knowing where his body is at or hearing any official reports.

Sorry, but have you seen Cameron play in the last two years?

What other WAFL reserves ruckmen do you rate?

Hey km
Have your thoughts changed on glass-mccasker at all? What are his strengths and weaknesses? What player do you see him similar to in the afl? At 198cm and 90 odd kilos he seems ready built player. What do you see as his range? Cheers

Claremont have a deep ruck group with not only Cameron but also Andrews and Seaby.

If Cameron played on another team where he had more regular league opportunities and a more prominent role as a lead ruck I'd anticipate more people would come around to him.

My thoughts on Glass-McCasker are much the same as before though I haven't viewed him since the u18 champs. In a draft deep with key position players he is one of the crowd. And he is in the mix for selection without being a certainty.

His height and size is appealing and he can play a shutdown role but he needs to become more of a rebounder, particularly with so many young key defenders coming through with that ability to not only beat their opponents as Glass-McCasker can do, but they also take intercept marks and provide some rebound.

Draft range is mid draft - undrafted (though unless you're being noted as a first round selection this year the undrafted element is implied with everyone else this year).

For an AFL comparison the first that comes to mind is Joel Tippett.

Have you got any thoughts on youngsters in the VFL who might be up for rookie selection or in the pre-season draft?

Michael Hartley. Daniel Capiron who has split time between the VFL and TAC Cup. Mitch Brown, Ash Close, Andrew Gallucci, Jordan Moncrieff and Jake Wilson from the VFL have all attracted some interest from AFL clubs.

Hey KM do you think its easier to recruit SA prospects as they are generally exposed to more senior football?

They're generally more AFL ready when they do get that senior exposure. So I would agree from that perspective it makes them more appealing to draft. Particularly given the quality of the SANFL relative to the other state league competitions.

I've heard things around Dan Coghlan and Nick Rippon as well.

Thanks guys.
Reason I ask is a guy I went to school with who was a bit younger than me, Ben Cavarra.
He's had a solid year at Frankston and I was shocked when he wasn't picked up at all after he swept all the awards at U18 level, captained Eastern Ranges to the flag, best on in the grand final, league best and fairest.
Is he any chance of getting picked up or is size still against him? After Caleb Daniel this year surely he's getting a look in?

The issue every year is the sheer quantity of good smalls available, and that's what counted against Cavarra last year. He was terrific in the TAC Cup and is terrific in the VFL. So he is on that edge of consideration.

But this year again with Jade Gresham and Kieran Lovell two outstanding smalls. It's against the odds Cavarra gets selected this year, but still possible given the standard of his performance.

Rioli from north Ballarat rebels predicted draft range

If drafted he is a late/rookie selection (3rd round at the earliest). But he has shown some hints of talent to suggest he may be worth a shot so he will receive draft consideration.

If you dont mind mate, where would you rate Aish and Freeman in this years draft? They both haven't achieved much yet, but how would they stack up if you could draft the 2013 versions of them this year?

They'd both fit in the 11-20 range in my power rankings and on draft day would feature in a similar range as two I project as best 22 player with confidence. Whether either club will get that what I'd consider correct currency though is the question.
