Agreed tax subsidies at the expense of locally built vehicles is ridiculous, and the proliferation of often poorly driven and incorrectly parked (particularly in busy shopping centres) monster utes and the larger 4 wheel drive vehicles where the bays are barely wide enough to accommodate an average size sedan is bad enough here, but it must be a nightmare in the narrow streets and shopping centres of the inner suburbs of Melbourne and Sydney.

Paul Keating was right on the money when in an interview on the ABC a few years back, and well before the arrival of monster utes, when he said something along the lines that if he was still Prime Minister he would tax the drivers of `those silly vehicles' until it hurt.
Why do we still have a luxury car tax? We have no car industry to protect anymore.

Why do we still have a luxury car tax? We have no car industry to protect anymore.
Only reason we have it is because it raises about $1 bil.

Luxury Car Tax – an additional 33 per cent tax on most motor vehicles that cost in excess of $71,849 – could be scaled back in the years ahead if the forward estimates from last night's 2023-24 Federal Budget are a guide.
Buried in the fineprint was a forecast that revenue from Luxury Car Tax would drop from the record $1.14 billion calculated for the 2022-23 financial year, to $870 million next financial year, and $840 million in the following fiscal year.
The same document forecasts a drop in revenue from the import tariff on motor vehicles – from approximately $440 million – over each of the next three financial years, down to $210 million in 2025-26, and falling again to $180 million in 2026-27.
The forecast reduction in Luxury Car Tax could be in anticipation of an increase in the number of low-emission or zero-emissions vehicles – which are currently not hit with LCT until the price eclipses $84,916.
Or it could be a reflection of the introduction of higher price thresholds from which LCT would apply, though no changes have been announced.
The automotive industry has lobbied for the abolition of Luxury Car Tax since before the end of local vehicle manufacturing in 2017.

Perhaps do what was supposed to be done at the beginning, increase GST and abolish some of these rubbish state and federal taxes. Make the system so much easier, I know wishful thinking.

If you read the article further down from what I quoted, it says something I didn't know. I assumed all cars were subject to 5% tariffs as part of the Button Plan back in the early 90's, long term tariff reduction, not some countries are favoured over others.

Obviously those free trade agreements we have signed with some countries have made motor vehicles free of tariffs.

Successive governments from both sides of politics have been reluctant to remove Luxury Car Tax because it would leave a $1 billion black hole in the budget. But the issue may come to a head during negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement with the UK and the European Union.

While cars imported from Japan, Thailand, South Korea, China and the US are already exempt from a 5 per cent import tariff, motor vehicles from the UK, the European Union, and South Africa are currently subject to a 5 per cent import tariff.

The UK and EU have lobbied for the removal of Luxury Car Tax in Australia as it is regarded as a non-tariff barrier and not in the spirit of a Free Trade Agreement.

It should go, stupid tax

Introduction of the GST was supposed to get rid of those rubbish state taxes, but no, too bloody greedy.

Had we taxed our natural resources properly like Norway, instead of behaving like it’s a great favour to have multinationals merely employ locals to dig it out of the ground for them to make off with for pennies on the dollar, we’d be laughing.

Instead we’re stuck counting down the days until all the superannuationless boomers check out so the old age pension stops being such a burden on the budget going forward.

May I/we be excluded from that broad brush comment.

Yeah, sorry. It’s not intended to be a jab. It just is what it is in terms of the future economy.

All the trillions and trillions currently floating around in compulsory super will take the place of government-funded pensions for those who missed out.

Congratulations to Isobel Borlase, daughter of Darryl and Jenny who made her national debut for the Opals in the Olympic qualifying tournament.

Isobel played alongside Lauren Jackson. Isobel is 23 years younger than Lauren, and when Isobel was born (in 2004 ) Jackson was already a two-time Olympian, a triple WNBA All-Star and a WNBA MVP.

Yes I know its a thought bubble - but is 2025 the Year of the Orca?

  • International Recognition
  • Everyone's favourite animal
  • Colours are on point

Orcas are apex predators with a diverse diet. Individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey. This includes a variety of fish, sharks, rays, and marine mammals such as seals and other dolphins and whales. They are highly social; some populations are composed of highly stable matrilineal family groups (pods). Their sophisticated hunting techniques and vocal behaviors, often specific to a particular group and passed along from generation to generation are considered to be manifestations of animal culture.

Orcas feature strongly in the mythologies of indigenous cultures, and their reputation in different cultures ranges from being the souls of humans to merciless killers.

They are sometimes called "wolves of the sea", because they hunt in groups like wolf packs.

Oz beat Germany and now have qualified for Paris, so hopefully Isobel makes the team for Paris.

There was a whole series of qualifying tournaments to get down to 16 nations inc hosts France and USA who won 2022 World Cup in Sydney, have automatically qualified for Paris. These 2 nations are playing in the 16 nations tournament spread out over 4 cities x 4 around the world over this weekend. The top 3 teams in each of the 4 groups qualify for Paris. France and USA are top of their groups, both are 2-0.

Oz is playing in Brazil and are 2-0, so will still make it, if they loose to Serbia in their final game. Brazil and GremioPower will hope Oz win and they beat Germany and qualify on goal difference in 3rd place, and maybe 2nd place if Oz thrash Serbia.

Jenny won 3 Netball World Cups playing mainly at Goal Shooter. There is a lot of crossover between mothers and daughters playing these two sports and the daughter being successful at the sport her mother didn't play at the top level.

Who has scheduled this for during Carnival?

I had no idea it was going on...

Stupid Europeans at FIBA. Other than Belem, the other cities each hosting 4 teams are, Sopron in Hungary, Antwerp in Belgium and Xi'an in China.

So, it's in our Bethlehem. Nice. It's in the opposite side of the country from here (like Adelaide and Darwin).

Then, I will leave here a sample of Para's pop music. It's a song about, as the title says, "Flying (Back) to Para".

Fair point re the huge amount of funds in compulsory super, but it's not that long ago that 1 million invested in a secure term deposit with one of the big banks only earned the investor about the same as the age pension, so it will be interesting to see what will happen if/when those funds are moved around the money market by those looking for a better return, particularly with property prices.

It won't happen all at once of course but the forthcoming retirements of those currently in the mid to late 50's will probably give a pointer of what is ahead.

We really are the (inter-connected) family club.

Warren Tredrea's manager was Geof Motley, and his cousin Debbie met Gary Tredrea at the football club and they married in the 70's. Christine Obst married Craig Ebert. Andrew Obst married Juliet Haslam. On and on it goes.
