Think you are being harsh on Phillp a kid who due to injuries and Covid has barely played in 3 years. His 3 goals in the first half of the practice match against the Tiger looked great ( then got crunched and missed a month)Always going to give a kid with that pace more time to adapt.

Perhaps. I've always taken a pretty glass half full approach with young players - Philp is one that I just can't really see a path for on our list. Too many guys ahead of him, and his standout trait (pace) seems offset by his regular fumbles. Gut feel is that the opportunity just won't be there before the realities of list turnover catch up with him.

Maybe it clicks in the next 12-15 months and we've got a player? If so, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Tigers Ben Miller UFA. A good cheap option that fills a need
If we feel budget options are the go, he would be great back up. The trick would be getting to leave an environment where he remains back up to a similar situation.

Played mostly KPD for Tigers, including some games at the top level. Mostly undersized ruck during draft year, can play at either end. The very definition of depth, but very capable.

We have a chance to assess Sam Durdin, some reports have McDonald still in the mix following his operation. If we have Weitering, Young, McDonald, Durdin and smaller Kemp, Marchbank and McGovern on the list next year, we have sufficient tall defenders. Absolutely with some “guarantees” of their health. We need a developing KPD, but not necessarily immediately.

With Young looking to settle in defence, there is an argument for an extra ruck. Absolutely we need a developing key forward option. A young forward/ruck would be a prime requirement, surely an extra year, pre season in to each of our young rucks would have them much closer to the mark.

It will be a fascinating draft period. I must admit to reverting a bit to your best available rather than needs drafting with our top pick. The first “carnival” game offered up two spectacular prospects for mine. Isaac Keeler forward/pinch hitting ruck at 198cm and ultra athletic could push to top 5 or simply be a top dozen(ish) type. The other possible top 5 who could also go in our likely range is Mattaes Phillipou 192cm mid/forward who is a December “foal”. Would slot straight on a troublesome wing. Commonsense says both go higher, but the order is very subjective at the moment. Phantom drafters have them between three and seventeen. If my judgement is right, neither will get to us, but a supporter can hope.

Phoenix Foster a 196cm forward/ruck played first ruck for SA on the weekend and showed plenty. Their no. 1 ruck and “star” key forward were absent, so will be interesting to see Foster’s opportunity when they are at full strength. Like what I saw and would be happy with him at a later, budget pick.

Of course if McDonald and/or Durdin don’t make the cut a key defender becomes essential, bringing young Lewis Hayes into the equation. Brother of young Port ruckman Sam, he is widely regarded as the second ranked KPD in the draft pre carnival.
Brother Sam is seemingly out of favour at Port so could be attractive if we want to bolster our rucks. (Personally, thinking we are probably covered with “even luck”).

Pretty sure the draft will not be as big a deal on this board as previous years, but a good one to fill some holes will be pivotal to a potential “dynasty”.

Staying with my previous posts, we can't continue to retain the collective tall/3rd tall players that are either unbalanced, under developed and or injury prone. I see Miller playing as the stopping KPD, shifting Young to be the intercept tall. So, the way I see it, Miller would replace a Parks/Omac on the list, even if you want to retain the talented Marchbank and Gov despite both still have on-going injuries.

Of course OMac might be given the all clear for future back concerns, but if there are any doubts, we need to make tough calls

We would still need to go to the draft for these types, so we continue to rejuvenate and or having developing types. I wouldn't be drafting Foster or a predominant KPF that can ruck, I want a ruckman that can be a threat forward

Think our top shelf core talent (who would get a game in any team) is pretty exciting and strong

FBWilliamsWeitering?
HBDocherty? (Young)Saad
C?Cripps?
HFWalsh?Silvagni
FF?McKayCurnow
FOL?CerraHewett

We just need to develop what we have and upgrade (trade/draft) where we can, to fill in the (?)...

Think we have defenders covered, with developing what we have...
But we could use a Ruck or Ruck/Foward, Wingers and consistent elite pressure small goal kicking forward...

I'd be happy to trade any of our players not listed above, to upgrade our list...
I would trade Williams in return for a KPP.

Who’s going to trade for Williams? Would be a Treloar type deal. What’s the point?
yep, doesn't work that way - some think this list management caper is like swap cards in the playground - hey, I've got 2 judds, swap you 1 for your spare doull

Would the Tigers entertain a swap of Dow for Miller?? A brother connection, replacement type for Cotchin, our future needs satisfied.......?

With our ruck situation, would it be best to look at a

Young Ruckman
Sam Hayes - Struggling to get a game for Port, proved he could play at the level
In Their Prime Ruckman
Brodie Grundy - Would he be worth looking at if Pies pay $300k odd of his salary?
Last legs Ruckman
Goldstein - Looked like a great leader and teacher on "on the couch"

IMO we don’t have a “ruck situation”.

Pitto and TDK are a good 1-2 ruck combo so there is no point plonking Goldy into the equation even if for only one season.

Grundy is not an option even if the Pies paid part of his salary as we wouldn’t have the cap space.

This season the KPP injury/depth issues have meant Young has not been able to deployed in the ruck at all.

Also next year Mirkov will be closer to being ready to play so we’ll be a lot closer to having 3 legitimate options.

Then Dow for Miller and some steak knives???? Maybe a third rounder?

You're responding to a post that says Miller is a free agent and we don't need to trade, suggesting that we still trade for him?

It's literally Miller for nothing, Richmond can't stop him from going wherever he wants, and Dow is then a completely separate conversation.

I don't think we have a 'ruck situation', but we'd definitely be in strife if heaven forbid TDK went down. Mirkov is still too raw and inconsistent in the VFL to be close to AFL selection, so we are certainly a bit light on depth. That being said I think we're better off getting a key forward/ruck rather than solely a 4th ruckman.

Fair point pal, you're not a teacher are you, tad condescending! Dow is trade bait, Richmond have his brother, he would suit their needs. In stead of gas lighting me lets hear how we could do it, so many campaigners on this site.....

Recruiting a backup ruck and slotting TDK into a more permanent forward/ruck role makes a lot of sense though.

Pitto and TDK in tandem most of the time, if Pitto misses for any reason it's then Hayes/Goldy and TDK rucking in tandem. Makes sense to have a setup that doesn't require us to borrow from the forward line the minute Pittonet gets injured or suspended.

Maybe by next year Mirkov is ready to play the odd game. But if we get a repeat of this year where Pitto misses months, I doubt he'd be ready to shoulder that load.

clubs don't swap players, it just doesn't happen.........

You: lets trade Dow for Miller.
Other Guy: Miller is a free agent, we don't need to trade.
You: OK, how about we ask for steak-knives as well then.

Weird exchange is all.

How would I do it? Assuming "it" is recruit Miller and offload Dow - get Miller as a free agent, shop Dow around for whatever we can get from whatever club he can convince to take a chance on him. That's pretty all there is to it. Blending the two offers no benefit, and if anything just dilutes the return we'd get for Dow because Richmond would be calculating Miller as part of the deal from their side.

Fair play I was in an antsy mood that's all, no offense taken pal............

We have a good young ruckman with DeKoning he is only young & going to continue, we have Pittonet who will be back, l think of more need is a flexible key position player who can pinch hit in the ruck with injuries.

We definitely need a legitimate ruck option beyond Pitto. I don't rate TDK as a legitimate no 1 ruck. The worst list management decision in Austin's time at the club. Especially when we let Casboult go. Crazy stuff. The entire plan was for Pitto to never get injured.

When Jones left he should have replaced him with a supplemental selection also. I think he probably underestimated where the list was at. Thought we'd still be in a developmental phase rather than the we have a list to challenge top 4 phase.

Don't agree DeKoning at 22 is basically shouldering a heavy load without geninue support, l think people are just too impatient with their expectations.

Preseason the expectation of tdk was to pinch hit in the ruck and play mostly forward. Wouldn't have been expected to be first ruck for a season or two. People forget this.

All good, happens to the best of us. I was certainly a little snarky too, but didn't mean anything by it.
Maybe a few of the Big Name posters need to learn some humility, based on the pathetic 'he said she said' arguments on this site recently??? Not hard to say sorry posters, maybe more of us could acknowledge it, what a better world it would be. Can't buy, fake, or sell humility, it's innate..
