I know that the change has been forced on him by Charlie's injury, but does Bassett get any credit for the way our forward line is functioning now? And if so, why weren't we playing like this before? Personel - Marshall developing, Finlayson coming in? Ken being a fly in the ointment and insisting on our 'bomb it to Charlie' plan - surely Charlie would have been way better off playing within the current structure? Interested to hear other's thoughts.

No.

Because they had since Jan to retool the forwardline.

It was well after r1 when the retooling began.

The entire change was slow and reactionary rather than being proactive in the decision making.

I'm not saying that the change wasn't long overdue. Even before we knew Charlie was going to be out for some time they should have been looking to change things up for this season. But it seems that Bassett has the ability to coach the forwards reasonably well, just wondering why it's taken so long for it to happen.

I think it's more to with Rozzee moving to the midfield and Marshall finally adding more desperation and intensity to his game

We've seen this before with Hinkley, he makes changes that actually improve us but because he doesn't really understand what he's done that worked he makes further changes that make us worse again. Our functioning forward line has come about by good fortune rather than good management and this is why when Dixon comes back into the side we are likely to revert to bomb it on Dixon's head and work harderey.

Well said. Some of the craziness in the Sack Hinkley thread is way OTT and personal and only serves to make our supporter-base look nuts. What you've said here is a pretty decent encapsulation. The problem is that we've stumbled onto a way forward, and it's no evidence of Ken's ability to adapt or even work through our flaws. Some of the biggest gains we've had over time have been made by our list management team. The board need t be very clear on this and questions need to be asked why it took so long get here. Coaches will often talk about how it's difficult to adjust to momentum swings late in a game, as getting the message out and any adjustments understood can take longer than you'd think. It seems with our group (coaching), it can take not minutes but weeks.

It’s “Sack Hinkley 5”. The first thread on this was in 2016. It’s no surprise comments have been increasingly over the top.

This is why I'm more than happy for them to give Charlie as much time as he needs to get back his fitness. I want to see Marshall, Finlayson and George given as much time as possible to gel together. Hopefully it will work so well that Ken will have no excuse to stuff around with it when Charlie is fit.

our utter irrelevance is mind boggling. i'm convinced that other than korns who is actively trying to sabotage us by pumping up ken's tyres, none of the victorian media schlubs even watch us play at all. they look at the scores after the game or the ladder and go, huh, port are 5-6 now, rEaDy To LaUnCh

we couldn't be further from it. we actually play some half decent opposition after the bye and will likely lose every game.

we beat st kilda by the barest of margins in a sweaty armpit of a ground where st kilda should have won the game in the first quarter if they kicked with the accuracy of an even half competent afl team.

we beat west coast and norf who are two of the worst teams ever to exist in the modern era.

we beat essendon who were about as uncompetitive as i've seen in the first half, AND WOULD HAVE LOST THAT TOO IF THEY HAD KICKED STRAIGHT! ONE GOAL IN THE SECOND HALF.

the only win that looks half ok was the bulldogs, but their best player was also out.

before this match i said we were a 9th-12th team. I think 12-14th is more accurate.

THIS IS A TEAM THAT WON THE MOST H&A GAMES OF THE LAST TWO SEASONS BEFORE INEXPLICABLY EXPLODING IN THE PRELIM FINAL. WITH A COACH WITH TEN YEARS OF ****ING FAILURE, WHO LITERALLY BROKE THE WORLD RECORD FOR LEAST SUCCESSFUL COACH IN AFL HISTORY.

IN A SEASON WHERE TEAMS WITH NEW COACHES HAVE HAD A MASSIVE SHOT IN THE ARM AND JUMPED UP THE LADDER.

AFL: Port Adelaide has snapped a two match losing streak, defeating Essendon after a strong first half at Adelaide Oval in round 12.

The thing is the first quarter, if Essendon kick straight they are in front. They easily moved the ball into their forward line from half back.

We are average, there is ‘building’ as Kenny keeps saying, this is it.
