Melbourne: what do we make of them

I seriously think they can win it all this year, they’re playing extremely good football. Nothing flukey either, just really well structured with great decision makers around the footy and their disposal has been so clean.

Since the Saints are hot trash again I’ll be hoping the Dees can get it done.

We will know more after this round.
The tigers are the best team still.
1. Tigers
2. Dogs
3. Port
4. Lions
5. Eagles
6. Demons

Right now demons are 6-10 team.
They have potential talent to be top 4 and they seem
to have recitified issues through the draft. However, they didnt get rid of the goodwin / richo combo. Horrible combo.
Demon coaches thats there problem.

+1

Jury is still out, they still give the opposition a sniff. Haven't blown apart an opponent early and then kept the pressure on.

The coach is a big concern, we will see if he poos the bed at the selection table by going too tall in the forwardline by selecting both BBB and Weideman for smaller players.

make no mistake about the lions. They are very much in the flag race. Guns on every line. Taking some time getting used to new forward line / neale/berry getting to 100%.

5-0, but is it pure talent getting over the "not so good teams"?
imo yes.

We will find out this weekend though.
Now first, I think people are premature on us as a big finals contender but, based on your message, I’m curious on something. If Melbourne are the 6-10 range, and the tier above us is the Tigers, Dogs, Port, Lions, and Eagles, who are the teams in our tier? I can’t think of the teams that would be in ours that we haven’t already beaten?

5 games in. 17 to go. let me know when you finish top 4 and have booked a double chance.
Youve had zero pressure applied from a top 4 side yet.
Tigers, Lions, Dogs, Port and WCE.
Beat them then start to get a bit excited. Sure enjoy the dream. No doubt you guys have the talent. No doubt. Its the coaches / culture, I dont trust yet.

step 1: beat top 4 teams
step 2: finish top 4
step 3: make a grand final
step 4: win the flag.

many steps and teams to conquer. Havent beaten anyone who was up and about yet. got gws and cats at their worst with very important outs.

Can't disagree with any of this. What has me excited is the change in our structures around stoppages, the improvement in our defensive structure and the improvement in our ball movement. Plus the ability to generate scores with our two key forwards still to return. However it remains to be seen how all this holds up against the benchmark teams you've listed above. Wouldn't surprise me if we can go with Lions & WCE but I have a feeling Richmond, Port & Dogs will have too much firepower for us. This Saturday will be an excellent test to see where we're at.

I'm not disagreeing with the assessment we're not proven ... I'm just asking who are the teams you're putting us in the same tier as. Obviously you're saying we're below the Tigers, Lions, Dogs, Port and WCE (which I pretty much agree with). So are we in a patch of our own with the Swans? Because the next group, Geelong, GWS, Collingwood, Freo, etc. we've either beaten or do look better than.

I have them around 5th with my ladder predictor right now, their start has given them a great buffer over sides trying to make finals so they should make the 8 unless things go disastrously wrong. Which does usually seem to be a possibility with Melbourne.

But hold firm against the weaker sides and snatch a couple of wins against highly rated opponents (this weekend being a great opportunity) and they can be top 4. The list has enough guns on it to be capable.

To go much deeper they'll need to show they can match it with Richmond at the G, West Coast in Perth or Port in Adelaide, it's a watch this space for me until they prove so.

tbf I think almost all Melbourne supporters have us somewhere in that 5th-6th range with the possibility of sneaking in the top 4

Considering people were penciling us in from anywhere from 7th-16th in the pre season with most having us outside the 8 its a nice change

I’m really starting to wonder why they have a bay 13 here. Good posts are drowned out by random inane trolling - not just this thread and not just opposition supporters.
Just merge the two and stop the pretence the main board is a serious place to talk football.

Especially with mods like Sterge going out of his way to stir shit up. I guess having defined banter boards and threads is too complicated for some people.

On topic I don’t think we’ll beat the tigers - loss by 20-25pt. They’re a bit too good for us right now.

5 games bro.
you beat GWS when they were down. put lachie whitfield, hogan and the way they are playing now? Would you beat them?

Maybe 6-10 was harsh and its more 4-8. but you dont want to be known too fast anyway. in fact its already happened. I reckon richmond without prestia might give you guys a lesson on Saturday. Bring things down a bit. Which wouldnt be the worst thing for Melbourne. Like the saints Melbourne have so much pressure in them to win a flag. Adding the pressure of being UP all year? often too much. saints 1997, 2009 - failed with just ridiculous pressure in the end.

IMO Demons will want to grow into the flag like hawks 2008 or dogs 2016 or tigers 2017. and I think they can.

But a few lessons and unknowns about coaching moreso, to come first.

Can goodwin / richo take on hardwick / hinkley / fagan / simpson / bevo?

Thats my main concern.

Coach impact is overrated, Goodwin has a winning record against Beveridge.

Not just Goodwin / Richo - we added Yze and Williams this year which I think has made a big difference.

Last time they were on a roll like this, Jordan De Goey and Mason Cox brought them back down to earth in that QB ass whooping in 2018.

So far they've had two games where the opposition fell over themselves (hawthorn and stkilda). Hawks and saints were in it up their eye balls. stkilda in particular should have been up by 40 odd points and cruising to a win - bad kicking is bad footy though.
Both those games the opposition was playing tough footy, and Melbourne looked vulnerable. Don't expect Richmond to drop away.

The thing in Melbourne's favour is that most of the top 8 plays open and fast footy, which plays into their hands

hahaha what the **** are you talking about with the St Kilda game?

31 scoring shots to 18 in our favor, in fact we had more scoring shots than them in every quarter. It was the fact we missed so many shots that actually kept them in the game. I literally have no idea at what stage during the game you could honestly think that they should have been up by 40+

Our finishing in the game v Hawthorn was the only thing that kept you in it for 3 quarters and then when the whips got cracking we blew you away

Lol.
When silly people make things up to justify not actually understanding things.

Worst it got for us vs the saints was when they were 16 points up 6.3 - 3.5 or 9 shots to 8

We then had 20 of the next 24 shots on goal and our bad kicking kept them close.
Hawthorn we absolutely dominated for 3.5 quarters in general play and only need 14 mins to kick 8 goals in the last.

Wait, St. Kilda should've been 40 points up? I think you've got it back to front there or am I reading it wrong?
