Melbourne: what do we make of them

I'm not sh*t talking. Melbourne are going great guns, remind me of Richmond in 2017 to be honest. But the reality is your draw is soft, helped by where you finished last year, and anything less than top 4 from here should be considered a huge missed opportunity.
Who did Richmond beat in their first five games in 2017?

Add a bottle of Grange to that and you’ve nailed it.

Richmond were garbage until the very end of 2017

At least our supporters waited until we won to become dickheads though

I've known Richmond supporters who have been dickheads for a lot longer than 4 years ;)

Still not sure about Melbourne. I'll wait to see how the players coming back from injury fit into the side.

Honestly I'm a little concerned about introducing Weissman and, to a greater extent, Brown.

Will be interesting.

Any club is suss when there's a bunch of false starts.
You don't win five in a row by accident though.
Enjoy it!

You never really know until much later in the season but i'd think that wins, or even just good solid performances, against Richmond and Sydney will blow the lid off.

Sydney are nearly done - kids have hit a wall already. I'd be really disappointed if we didn't win that game comfortably.

The Tigers are a different story - should be a good test of game plans early in the year.

Get over Richmond this week and they are a lock for top 4...other than dogs at marvel, they will start favourites in every game up until round 15..should be 12-3 at worst heading into the back half of the season.

As I’ve said on this thread previously, Gawn, Oliver, petrecca, lever and May are as good a top 5 “best team players” in the league...the new rules will also suite Ben brown, who will be a huge recruit.

They are beautifully placed.

Can only beat who is front of you obviously. So being 5-0 can’t be seen as a bad thing.

Melbourne’s recent history though has me fairly skeptical. If they were a consistent side who in 2017/2018 they would have won several more games.

I don’t think we will get a proper gauge on them until the run home. Richmond next week involves Richmond having a longer break so wouldn’t be surprised to see Richmond run them ragged.
In 2017/18 many of our best players today were 20/22 years of age or not at the club. (Oliver, Petracca, Salem, Brayshaw, Lever, May, Langdon, Hunt, Fritsch, Pickett, Jackson, Weideman...)

It's a stupid assertion.

The only top 8 team they beat in the first 5 round was West Coast.

Like I’ve said before, round 5 is way too early to judge, it was in 2017 and it is now.
Three bottom six sides, West Coast at the MCG and us after we controlled the game for three quarters and then had zero fit players on the bench in the second half (and Jack Watts in the ruck) and were overran. Pretty happy with our scalps so far in that context. Richmond lost badly to the eventual grand finalists in round 6, 2017 and lost another three straight after that and everyone was writing them off. Hopefully we follow the same trajectory.
