TBH I'm just happy to see some movement in the coaches' box, and not just in response to good assistants leaving.
Yeah. I don't know enough about this guy or what he's being hired to do to be able to say it's a good or bad appointment, but at least we're doing SOMETHING. It may or may not make us better, but doing nothing definitely won't help.

Agree - The club has been really stagnant or reactive with coaches for years now, citing an inability to attract people from interstate. If that's the case, the logical move would be to ensure that you provide opportunities for career advancement, which can only occur if you move along those who are underperforming...

The easy option would have been to just stick Sloane into an assistant role (which I guess is still a possibility in addition to this). But at least we haven't just plucked somebody from the revolving door of SA football. As far as I'm aware the guy has no history with any SA club at either AFL or SANFL level, so if nothing else we might benefit from an outsider's perspective.

If you google him, he's been Brisbane's forward coach in the two seasons they made the GF and has been an assistant in various roles there since the Voss era, notably developing Harris Andrews when coaching defense. Has apparently won AFLCA assistant coach of the year and placed high in that award multiple times. Seems like one of those long term assistant coach types who flies under the radar.
If ALL of that's true they shoulda sacked Nicks and appointed Murray Davis Head Coach.
(has anybody ever gone from Football Director to Head Coach?)

Perhaps the possibility of a vacancy opening up here next year was part of what attracted him to the role. He can be right down the hallway when we're scouring the world for a Nicks replacement.

Jeez, that'd be Machiavellian, like Australian Federal Pollies.
Advise/"help" a bloke whose job you covet.

Davis has a well-rounded coaching journey, having mentored the Lions’ forward line for the past two seasons and prior to that their defenders for a decade. He has also worked in Brisbane’s development team and coached in his own right, which included leading the NT Thunder to a NEAFL premiership in 2011.

Davis will work closely with all of Adelaide’s coaches but in particular assistants Scott Burns (forwards), Nathan van Berlo (midfield) and Jack Hombsch (defence).

Crows Executive General Manager Football Adam Kelly said the role of Senior Coach is increasingly demanding and the Club wanted to provide Matthew Nicks with the best possible structure and support in 2025.

“Over the past couple of months, we have been evaluating and exploring ways in which we can finetune our coaching structure and been searching for someone to complement the strengths of Matthew and his assistants,” Kelly said.

It sounds like his role is that of a senior assistant coach, except with a new role created that sounds like a promotion, so that we don't have to demote Burns.

Seems like a good fit for his skill set.

Not sure what to make of our coaching structure outside of that. If Burns sucks as a senior assistant, why not just demote him and put Davis into that position?

It doesn't sound like from the announcement that we are hiring a new senior assistant coach in addition to a "coaching director".

It also means that we are still lacking someone with any sort of strong football experience that sits above Nicks and can apply significant oversight over him and his decision making

It's debatable but over the past 2 - 3 years the Brisbane foward line is said to be the best in the AFL.
Great Get Gang👏👏👏

So how does this coaching director position actually work. Does Nicks report into him? Does Nicks have the final say? Who gets thrown under the bus if we have another poor season?

is it more of an opportunity to bounce things off another coach?

I guess what concerns me is that he's never been a coaching director, and the club has never employed someone in this role before. I just hope he doesn't suck but stays in the role for ages because the club doesn't know what a good coaching director would look like or what the role should even be.

Scott Burns demoted to Forwards Coach

Davis not replacing Burns as Senior Assistant?

So still need to fill that spot, Brett Montgomery...
